What is more important pleasing people or pleasing God? That is the question we all must answer as we reflect on our lives throughout 2024 and as we project for the future in our new year resolution. We are now in early January and many of us have or are currently making our plans for New Year resolutions. unfortunately, Most New Year’s resolutions fail because they often lack a strong foundation or realistic approach. May I suggest that there could be a next reason why they fail could it be that you are fighting God’s purpose for your life?

Sometimes we feel stuck, restless, or even frustrated with life. No matter what you do, things just don’t click. Here’s the truth: you might be fighting God’s purpose for your life without even realizing it. Before you were born, God designed a unique, incredible plan for you—a path filled with hope and a future (Jeremiah 29:11). But here’s the catch: you have the free will to either follow His plan or resist it. If you’re tired of the struggle and ready for clarity, let’s dive into the six unmistakable signs that you’re resisting God’s purpose—and how to stop.

Introduction

The Lord Jesus created you with a specific purpose in mind, a divine blueprint tailored for your life. Yet, many of us unknowingly fight against His plan. While His way brings peace, fulfillment, and blessings, resisting it can lead to unnecessary pain, confusion, and stagnation. But how do you know if you’re pushing against Jesus’s will? Let’s explore six signs that may reveal you’re fighting His purpose—and practical steps to realign with Him.

  1. Walking in Disobedience to Biblical Principles

Disobedience is one of the clearest signs you’re resisting Jesus’s purpose. The Bible provides clear principles to guide our lives—love, forgiveness, prayer, purity, and generosity, to name a few. Ignoring these principles while expecting to fulfill God’s plan is like trying to drive a car without fuel. Practical Tip: Reflect on areas of your life where you’ve ignored God’s Word, and start taking steps toward obedience today.

  1. Ignoring God’s Personal Instructions for You

Jesus often speaks directly to our hearts, giving us specific guidance for each season. Whether it’s leaving a toxic relationship, pursuing a new job, or forgiving someone, delayed obedience is still disobedience. Example: Abraham left his homeland in obedience to God, even when he didn’t know the full picture. Practical Tip: Write down the last clear instruction God gave you and take one small step toward obeying it this week.

  1. Doing Everything Except What God Asked You to Do

Sometimes, we try to compensate for disobedience by doing “good” things that Jesus never asked of us. But partial obedience is still disobedience. Example: You might serve at church or donate to charity, but if God’s instruction was to reconcile with someone, those other actions wouldn’t fulfill His purpose. Practical Tip: Focus on doing what God specifically asked, no matter how uncomfortable it feels.

  1. Doubting God’s Plan for Your Life

Doubt creates delays. When we second-guess Jesus’s promises or instructions, we paralyze ourselves with inaction. Remember, God’s plans are always for your good (Jeremiah 29:11). Practical Tip: Replace doubt with faith by meditating on Scriptures like Proverbs 3:5-6, which remind you to trust God wholeheartedly.

  1. Allowing Fear to Limit You

Fear whispers lie that Jesus’s plans are too risky or that you’ll fail. But fear doesn’t come from God; it’s a tool of the enemy to keep you stuck. Biblical Reminder: “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7). Practical Tip: Confront fear by declaring God’s promises over your life and taking small, courageous steps forward.

  1. Prioritizing People’s Opinions Over God’s Will

Are you more concerned with what others think than with obeying God? This misplaced priority can derail your purpose. Remember, it’s God’s opinion that matters most. Example: Jonah ran from God’s instruction to preach to Nineveh, valuing his feelings over God’s plan. It wasn’t until he yielded that he fulfilled his purpose. Practical Tip: Pray for boldness to prioritize God’s will, even when it goes against popular opinion.

Conclusion

Fighting God’s purpose doesn’t just delay your blessings; it can also impact the lives of others connected to your obedience. Like Samson, Jonah, or even Moses, your journey may involve struggle, but the rewards of surrendering to God are immeasurable. Take time to reflect, pray, and commit to walking in God’s purpose for your life.
