Feeling Lost When You Read the Bible?
You’re not alone.
Many believers feel overwhelmed, distracted, or disconnected when they try to read Scripture. You may wonder, “Why don’t I feel anything?” or “How do I actually hear from God?”
I’ve been there. And I’ve guided others who’ve been there too.
That’s why today I want to share something that works: a simple, proven guide from pastor and teacher David Platt. He calls it MAPS, and it’s helped thousands, including me, read the Bible in a deeper, more life-changing way.
Let’s walk through these four powerful steps.
📍 Step 1: Meditate and Memorize God’s Word
First, don’t just read the Bible absorb it.
Think of it like slow-cooked food, not fast food. It takes time, but it nourishes you deeply.
For example, Psalm 1 says those who meditate on God’s Word “day and night” are like trees planted by streams. They grow strong and steady. I remember one day reading Psalm 23 over and over. By the fourth time, I saw something I’d missed before “He restores my soul.” I felt peace that I hadn’t felt all week.
Also, try memorizing a verse a week.
Start with Psalm 119:11 “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” Repeat it aloud. Write it on a sticky note. You’ll be surprised how God brings it to mind just when you need it.
💬 Quick Tip: Use a Bible memory app or keep a verse on your phone lock screen!
✍️ Step 2: Apply the Bible to Your Daily Life
Next, ask, “How does this apply to me right now?”
Reading without doing can be dangerous. James 1:22 warns us not to be hearers only. That’s self-deception.
I used to read Scripture in the morning and forget it by lunch. But when I began journaling one action step each day even something simple like “Be kinder to my spouse” I saw real change.
Don’t aim for perfection.
Aim for direction. Let the Holy Spirit guide your heart toward obedience, one choice at a time.
✨ Reflection Question: What is one thing God wants you to do today based on what you read?
🙏 Step 3: Pray the Word Boldly
Then, turn Scripture into prayer.
If you read John 15:7, pray it back to God: “Lord, help me abide in You today. Let Your words live in me. I’m asking You to guide my choices.”
Prayer isn’t a formula. It’s a conversation.
Sometimes we don’t know what to say, but God’s Word gives us the words. I once prayed Psalm 34:18 during a season of grief: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted.” That prayer anchored me when I couldn’t see the way forward.
Don’t just talk listen.
Prayer aligns your heart with God’s will, especially when it’s shaped by Scripture.
🙌 Challenge: Start or end your Bible time with 3 minutes of focused prayer using a verse you just read.
📣 Step 4: Share What You Learn
Finally, pass it on.
Jesus said in Matthew 28:19 to make disciples. That includes sharing what you’re learning.
You don’t need a platform.
You need a willing heart. I once shared a verse I had memorized with a friend going through a tough time. Her eyes filled with tears. That simple act reminded her God had not forgotten her.
Ask God daily:
“Who can I bless with Your Word today?” Share in a text, social media post, or conversation. The Gospel grows when it flows through us.
✏️ Try This: Post one verse a week that encouraged you and why.
