A Refuge to Run To: Finding Peace in the Middle of Uncertainty
We live in chaotic times.
One moment life seems steady; the next, everything feels like it’s falling apart.
People lose jobs. Loved ones get sick. Friendships grow distant.
You may ask, Where do I go when everything else gives way?
A Familiar Story in a New Light
King David once asked that same question.
Before he wore a crown, David served a king who wanted him dead. He had done everything right. Yet Saul grew jealous and tried to kill him. David ran for his life, ending up in the land of his old enemy, Gath, the home of Goliath.
Ironically, Goliath’s people recognized him. Fear gripped David so deeply that he pretended to be insane. He drooled. He scratched at doors. The king of Gath, disgusted, kicked him out.
So where did David go? He ran into a cave. Not exactly royal, right?
Still, it was in that dark and lonely place that David wrote Psalm 34. He didn’t write out complaints. He wrote out praise.
“I will bless the Lord at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth.” — Psalm 34:1 (ESV)
When Praise Becomes a Weapon
At first glance, praise doesn’t seem powerful.
But for David, it changed everything.
When fear tried to rule his thoughts, he reminded himself of who God was.
When enemies surrounded him, he remembered who fought for him.
David didn’t deny his fear, he brought it to God.
“I sought the Lord, and He answered me; He delivered me from all my fears.” — Psalm 34:4 (NIV)
That’s powerful. God didn’t just take away the threat—He took away the fear.
So, what does this mean for you?
Your Safe Place Still Exists
You may not be hiding in a cave.
But maybe you’re hiding behind a smile.
Maybe you’re scared of a diagnosis, a broken relationship, or the future of your family.
Here’s the truth: the same God who rescued David hasn’t changed.
He still hears your prayers.
He still protects you.
He still walks with you through every moment of pain.
So, instead of running from fear, run to the Refuge.
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” — Psalm 34:18 (NIV)
Take a Moment to Reflect
Right now, pause and think about this:
-
Has God ever brought you through something you didn’t think you’d survive?
-
Can you remember a moment when peace came unexpectedly?
-
Who in your life needs to be reminded of this same hope?
Don’t worry if answers don’t come quickly. Sometimes we need reminders.
David wrote Psalm 34 to remind himself and us that God is always good, even when life is not.
