The Greatest Servant
We don’t like to admit it, but most of us would rather be served than serve. We’d rather be recognized than overlooked. We’d rather feel important than ordinary.
Yet this desire creates a quiet tension in our souls. We know we’re made in God’s image, created for a purpose. But deep down, we often chase significance in the wrong ways.
That’s where Jesus steps in and flips the script.
When the King Stooped Low
Jesus had every reason to expect service. After all, He is the King of kings. He could have demanded attention, honor, and power. But He didn’t.
Instead, Jesus said something that changed everything:
“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Matthew 20:28 (NLT)
This wasn’t just a quote. It was a lifestyle. Jesus didn’t just talk about service, He lived it.
He fed the hungry. He healed the sick. He welcomed outcasts. He touched lepers. He forgave sinners. And He washed the dirty feet of the very men who would abandon Him.
If Jesus, the Son of God, lived as a servant, what does that say about the life we’re called to live?
When Serving Feels Small
Let’s be real, serving doesn’t always feel glamorous. Cleaning up after your kids, visiting someone in the hospital, or helping a friend move boxes isn’t flashy. No one claps. There are no trophies. And yet, Jesus said the greatest in His kingdom are the servants.
That truth hits hard. It also hits home.
I once met a woman named Clara who baked bread every Saturday, not to sell, but to give away. She visited lonely neighbors and brought them fresh loaves. “It’s not much,” she told me. “But it’s love in a crust.”
Her story stuck with me. Clara wasn’t famous. But she was faithful. She didn’t need a platform to serve, she used her oven.
Just like Jesus used a towel.
Why Serving Others Is Serving God
When we serve people, we’re really serving God. Jesus said that what we do for “the least of these,” we do for Him (Matthew 25:40).
That means picking up trash at church, helping a struggling parent, or smiling at a cashier with kindness, it all matters. It’s all seen by God.
Better yet, it reflects Jesus.
In a world that screams, “Get ahead!” Jesus whispers, “Go low.” In a culture chasing recognition, He invites us to choose humility. He reminds us that serving isn’t about status, it’s about love.
Let the Cross Change You
The cross was the ultimate act of service. Jesus gave His life though He was innocent so that you and I could be free.
He didn’t just die for the good. He died for the broken, the bitter, and the burdened. That includes you and me.
So, what does that stir in your heart? Does it move you to worship? To gratitude? Does it compel you to serve like He served?
You don’t have to save the world. But you can love your neighbor. You don’t need a pulpit. But you can offer prayer. You don’t need a title. But you can carry a towel.
Just like Jesus did.
