The Struggle of Work and Trust
Have you ever poured your heart into something only to feel like the results slipped through your hands? Maybe it was your career, your ministry, or even your parenting. You worked hard, but the outcome didn’t match the effort. That’s frustrating. It’s also exhausting.
Here’s the truth: you’re not alone. I’ve been there too. And Scripture speaks directly to this tension. Proverbs 16:3 reminds us, “Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established.”
At first glance, it sounds simple. But in reality, it’s a daily decision that takes faith, humility, and courage.
What It Means to Commit Your Work
Committing your work doesn’t mean passively waiting for God to do everything. It means putting your hands to the task with full effort while trusting Him with the outcome. Think of it like farming. You prepare the soil, plant the seed, and water faithfully. But you can’t make the sun shine or the seed sprout. That’s God’s role.
Paul expands on this in Romans 12:6–8 when he explains how God gives unique gifts: teaching, serving, encouraging, giving, leading, showing kindness. Each gift matters. Each task has meaning. But they only find their full purpose when surrendered to God.
Practical Ways to Commit Your Work to God
So how can you live this out? Here are some simple steps you can practice today:
-
Honor Him with your efforts. Work with integrity, even when no one sees.
-
Value the people you interact with. Treat every person as someone made in God’s image.
-
Return the tithe. Trust God by giving back from what He provides.
-
Promote truth and love. Stand for what is right in your workplace, family, or ministry.
-
Live generously. Share your resources and kindness freely.
-
Use time wisely. Be intentional with how you plan your days.
-
Leverage creativity. Use your talents—writing, building, designing, teaching—as worship.
These actions build habits that align your life with God’s calling.
Your Part vs. God’s Part
Here’s where peace enters the picture. You don’t carry the full weight of results. You simply obey. God does the rest.
Imagine planting a garden. You nurture the soil, give it sunlight, and water faithfully. But the miracle of growth comes from God. That’s how life works too. Your job is obedience. God’s job is everything else.
A Personal Story
I once spent months preparing a project I believed would change lives. I prayed, worked long hours, and poured all my creativity into it. But when the day came, the results were smaller than I hoped. At first, I felt defeated.
Later, I realized something deeper: God wasn’t asking me to measure success by numbers. He was asking me to measure it by obedience. One person was impacted in a way that sparked transformation in their life. That was worth it.

Final Encouragement
At the end of the day, God is not asking you to do everything. He’s asking you to commit your work to Him. Whether you teach, lead, serve, design, or simply show kindness—do it for His glory. Trust Him with the rest.
Your job is obedience. God’s job is the outcome. When you live that truth, you’ll find peace in the process and joy in the journey.
