The Big Question We All Ask
Have you ever laid awake at night wondering, “What does God want from me?” . Many people wrestle with this. They ask:
-
What is God’s will for my life?
-
What is my purpose and calling?
-
What can I do to please God?
I’ve been there, too. As a believer and teacher, I’ve spent years asking these same questions. The good news is that the Bible gives us clear answers.
So instead of guessing or chasing endless religious checklists, let’s see what God Himself says He desires.
God Wants More Than Sacrifices
In the Old Testament, Israel thought sacrifices and rituals were enough. They gave offerings, burned incense, and went through the motions. Yet their lives were full of pride, deceit, and injustice.
That’s when the prophet Micah spoke up:
“He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?” (Micah 6:8 ESV)
In other words, God wanted their hearts, not just their rituals. Hosea echoed the same truth: God desires mercy, not sacrifice.
So what does that mean for us today? Let’s break it down.
1. Do Justice
Doing justice isn’t only about legal systems or big movements. It’s also about how we treat people every day.
Justice means defending the weak, helping the hurting, and speaking up for those who have no voice. It means treating people fairly and refusing to look away when someone suffers.
Think about Jesus. He healed the sick, lifted the poor, and defended the outcasts. To do justice is to follow His example.
Practical step: Who in your life needs you to stand beside them this week? A coworker being overlooked? A friend facing unfair treatment? Justice begins in small, daily acts.
2. Love Kindness
God’s mercy is kindness we don’t deserve. And He calls us to reflect that same mercy to others.
Sometimes kindness feels costly. It means forgiving when you’d rather hold a grudge. It means serving someone who may never thank you. It even means loving enemies, just as Jesus taught in Luke 6:35.
But here’s the beauty: kindness softens hearts. It heals relationships. It points people back to God.
Practical step: Choose one undeserved act of kindness this week. Pay for someone’s meal. Encourage a struggling friend. Call a family member you’ve avoided.
3. Walk Humbly
Walking humbly means remembering you are not God. You have limits. You need a Savior.
Humility doesn’t mean weakness. Instead, it means surrender. When you’re humble, you’re teachable. You allow God to guide you, shape you, and use you.
Humility frees you from the crushing pressure of self-sufficiency. You don’t have to be everything for everyone. You simply have to walk with God.
Practical step: Start your mornings by praying, “Lord, I need You today. Teach me to depend on You.” That simple shift changes everything.
Putting It Together
So, what does God want? It’s not endless apologies. It’s not perfect religious performance. It’s this:
-
Do justice.
-
Love kindness.
-
Walk humbly with Him.
These three simple steps cut through the noise of our world. In a culture obsessed with self, they point us back to God’s heart.
