The Good Life: Why True Fulfillment Comes from Following Jesus
The Pain You Feel (and the Hope You Need)
Have you ever chased something that looked like it would satisfy but left you empty? You might have sought fulfillment in success, praise, or possessions, and yet felt a sharp emptiness inside. I’ve been there too.
But then I discovered something better. And so can you. In this post, I’ll show how Jesus is the key to the good life. Then I’ll help you spot traps and walk toward your true purpose.
By the end, you’ll see a clearer path forward, one anchored not in shifting things, but in the Shepherd who leads you.
Why We Feel Empty Even When We “Have It All”
Many people think that fulfillment comes from external things. For example, you might believe that:
-
If you earn a high income, you’ll finally feel secure.
-
If people applaud you or admire you, you’ll feel worthy.
-
If you collect more, bigger, and better things, life will feel full.
At first, these seem promising. But over time, they fade. Praise from people quiets. Material things break, lose value, or feel meaningless. Security built on money or status can vanish in crisis.
In fact, Jesus warns us about this trap. He says the enemy steals our attention with distractions, things that seem satisfying but lead to ruin. Only He offers life that doesn’t fade.
The Shepherd & the Gate: Jesus’ Metaphor in John 10
Next, let’s look at the Bible to see how Jesus describes this “good life.” In John 10, He introduces a powerful image:
-
Jesus is the Good Shepherd who cares tenderly for His sheep.
-
He is also the gate, the entry into life and safety.
Through those metaphors, He means:
-
If you follow Him, He leads, feeds, and protects you.
-
If you come through Him (not another path), you find access to abundant life.
Thus, true life is not about chasing success but trusting in Jesus as your Shepherd and Gate.
The Problem: Chasing the Wrong Life
Let me share a short story.
A friend, “Sara,” once told me: “I spent years building my career, stacking praise, getting awards. Yet I felt hollow inside.” She felt like she had won, yet lost.
She realized she was trying to live the good life by worldly standards. Then she paused, repented, and began following Jesus more. Slowly, she sensed more peace, joy, and clarity of purpose.
Likewise, many of us chase the wrong life. We aim at security, fame, or comfort. Yet those paths can lead to anxiety, burnout, or emptiness.
The Solution: How to Walk into the Good Life Now
So how do you live the good life God intends? Here’s a practical, step-by-step path:
-
Pause and reflect
Ask: Where am I chasing fulfillment? In money? Relationships? Recognition? Or in Jesus? -
Repent of idols
Turn away from what steals your heart. Confess that you trusted lesser things more than God. -
Trust Jesus as your Shepherd
Let Him lead your decisions, your rest, your purpose. -
Follow Him daily
Abide in prayer, read Scripture, obey by faith. -
Watch meaning grow
As you follow, God will produce fruit—purpose, peace, joy, service.
Let’s see these in action via an example. Suppose you’ve long believed your identity is your job title. Then you lose that role. The world says: you’ve failed. But if your identity is in Jesus, then even in change you stand firm. He shepherds.
Quiz: What’s Driving Your Search for Fulfillment?
Choose one answer for each question.
Question | A — Earthly Path | B — Jesus as Shepherd |
---|---|---|
1. What do you work hardest for? | Approval, success, wealth | Growing closer to Jesus |
2. When you rest, you fear… | I’ll lose momentum or reputation | I won’t measure up unless I do more |
3. If you lose what you’ve built, you think… | I’ve lost everything | God still holds me |
4. What gives you lasting joy? | Accomplishments, praise | Communion with Jesus, serving others |
If your answers lean A most often, you might be chasing a shallow path. That’s okay—this is the starting point. Let this quiz raise awareness so you can shift toward B.
Transition: From Awareness to Action
Now that you see where you might be wandering, let me guide you further.
First, keep these truths close:
-
Only Jesus offers a lasting, good life.
-
The world’s version of “good life” fades.
-
He leads and protects like a shepherd.
Then, begin the walk. Start small. Pray, surrender, follow.
Encouragement for the Journey
You won’t always feel dramatic change overnight. But over weeks, months, years, you’ll start seeing subtle shifts:
-
You’ll care less about others’ praise.
-
You’ll find deeper peace in seasons of loss.
-
You’ll feel more driven to love, serve, and share.
I still struggle. But I press on remembering who leads me. And so can you.
Closing Prayer & Call to Hope
Father, I surrender my empty pursuits. I choose You as my Shepherd. Lead me into the good life You promise. Teach me to follow You daily. Fill me with meaning that never fades. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
If you’re reading this, will you pause and reflect today? Ask God: “Where am I chasing lesser things?” Then take one step toward Him. After that, come back here and leave a comment: Which step will you take first?
