Baptized Into Christ: The True Meaning of Burial and New Life
The apostle Paul, writing to the Roman congregation, declared that as many of us who have been baptized into Christ are buried with Him in baptism unto death, that we should rise to walk in newness of life. This powerful truth reveals what water baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus is truly about. It is not a ritual. It is not a symbol alone. It is participation in the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Today, I speak to many in congregations who say they are safe, yet have not been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, calling upon His name for the washing away of sins. Baptism is burial. And burial follows death.

The Gospel: Death, Burial, and Resurrection
The gospel is simple and profound. It is the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. When we believe that the Lord Jesus is Lord Himself manifested in the flesh, we are brought to repentance. Repentance is dying to sin.
If a person is not dead, it is not proper to bury them. Likewise, if we have not truly repented, if we have not died to sin, then baptism becomes an empty act. True repentance produces godly sorrow and a contrite heart, which the Lord Jesus does not despise.
Scripture teaches that we perceive the love of the Lord Jesus because He laid down His life for us. We are also told that He shed His blood for the church. Because Spirit has no blood to shed, He took on flesh so that He could offer the perfect sacrifice. Without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins.
Forgiveness vs. Remission: Understanding the Difference
Many modern translations speak of repentance and baptism for the forgiveness of sins. However, forgiveness and remission are not identical.
Forgiveness does not require blood. Even under the Old Covenant, forgiveness was granted through godly sorrow and repentance. But remission, the removal of sin from the record, requires blood.
When we repent, we die to sin. When we are baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, His blood is applied for the remission of sins. The sin is removed from our record, though we must still mortify the deeds of the body as we grow in Christ.
As we mature, the disease of sin is continually subdued. Through the gift of the Holy Ghost, the believer grows in grace and knowledge. In this process, the death, burial, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus are fulfilled in us. We move toward spiritual maturity, learning to bridle the tongue and subject the body to the will of the Lord Jesus.
The Foundation Laid by the Apostles
In the book of Acts, the apostles were given the keys to the kingdom. The foundation they laid cannot be removed. When Peter preached repentance and baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, he was not offering a suggestion. He was declaring heaven’s instruction.
Some claim to be apostles but deny this foundation. Scripture warns that if the foundation is destroyed, what can the righteous do? We must contend earnestly for the faith once delivered to the saints.
The apostle Jude warned that certain men would creep in secretly, bringing destructive teachings and denying the only Lord. These teachings, rooted in human tradition rather than apostolic doctrine, have spread widely. Yet the Word remains unshaken.
Does Baptism Save?
Some say baptism does not save. Yet Scripture plainly states that baptism now saves us, not the removal of dirt from the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward the Lord Jesus Christ.
Baptism is not magic water. It is obedient faith in action. It is burial with Christ. It is calling on His name. It is entry through the strait gate and onto the narrow path.
Those who refuse sound doctrine often present themselves with humility and persuasive speech. Outwardly they appear righteous, yet inwardly they are empty. We are instructed to rebuke error sharply, not in hatred, but in love, so that souls may be restored.
A Call to Return
To those who believe and are enduring persecution—continue. Stand firm. To those who sit in congregations but have not obeyed the gospel as delivered in Scripture, come fully into the faith through repentance and baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus.
Remember the warning given to the church at Ephesus: return to your first love. To those who say they are rich and in need of nothing, examine yourselves. Spiritual blindness can exist in religious settings.
Buy the gold tried in the fire, the doctrine of the apostles tested through persecution. Anoint your eyes with spiritual understanding. See clearly.
Come Out and Be Separate
If you are trapped in systems that cling to human doctrine rather than Christ, come out and be separate. It will not be easy. False teaching hardens like concrete around the feet. Pride resists correction.
Yet every person may seem right in their own eyes. It is the counsel of the Lord Jesus that stands forever.
This message is not spoken in condemnation but in love. The Lord Jesus calls all to repent and live. Let us earnestly contend for the faith once delivered. Let us obey the gospel fully. Let us walk in newness of life.
