The Name Above Every Name: Why the World Must Know the Lord Jesus
Recently, I listened to a television program where several young people were discussing spiritual matters. For nearly ten minutes, they spoke repeatedly about “God.” Yet during the entire conversation, not once did they mention the name Lord Jesus.
Frankly, I found this deeply troubling. The discussion sounded spiritual, but something essential was missing. The Bible does not present an unknown or unnamed deity. Instead, it clearly reveals who the Creator is and what His name is. When we remove the name of the Lord Jesus, we remove the very center of the Bible’s message.
Understanding this truth is critical, especially for younger generations who are searching for meaning and truth.
The Bible Reveals the Creator
The first line of the Bible states:
“In the beginning the Lord Jesus created the heaven and the earth.”
At first glance, it may appear that the Creator is anonymous. However, as the Bible unfolds, the identity of the Creator becomes unmistakably clear.
In the Gospel of John, we learn that the One who created the world actually came into the world as a man. Scripture explains that the world was made by Him, yet the world did not recognize Him.
That man was the Lord Jesus Christ.
Without Him, nothing would exist. Every person alive today, every nation, every generation, exists because of Him. Yet many still do not know Him as the Creator.
The Tragedy of Not Knowing His Name
The Bible tells us something both powerful and heartbreaking:
He came unto His own, and His own received Him not.
The Lord Jesus came to Israel, the people chosen to receive the revelation of truth through both the Old and New Testaments. Yet many rejected Him.
However, the scripture also gives a powerful promise:
“As many as received Him, to them gave He power to become the sons of the Lord Jesus, even to them that believe on His name.”
Notice the emphasis on His name. The name carried by the Savior when He walked on earth was Jesus. According to the Bible, this name is above every name in heaven, on earth, and under the earth.
Therefore, the scriptures leave us without excuse. The identity of the Creator has been clearly revealed.
What the Apostles Taught
The apostles consistently taught the importance of the name of the Lord Jesus.
The Apostle Paul wrote:
“Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus.”
This instruction shows that the name of the Lord Jesus is not merely symbolic, it is central to faith, worship, and salvation.
To enter into a true relationship with the Lord Jesus, the Bible teaches that a person must be born again. In the Gospel of John, the Lord Jesus explained that unless a person is born of water and Spirit, they cannot enter the kingdom of heaven.
This new birth is not a suggestion. It is a requirement.
Contending for the True Faith
The book of Jude gives a serious warning. It urges believers to:
“Earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered to the saints.”
Why was this warning necessary?
Because certain individuals had begun to distort the truth. Jude wrote that these men denied the only Lord and the Lord Jesus Christ.
In other words, they rejected the true revelation of who the Lord Jesus is.
This warning is just as relevant today as it was in the first century.
A Hidden Foundation
Sadly, much of the world today grows up without hearing the full biblical message. From kindergarten to university, many educational systems avoid teaching the foundational truths of the Bible.
As a result, many people know about religion but do not know the Lord Jesus personally.
The Bible presents the Lord Jesus as the central figure of all scripture, the visible manifestation of the Creator in human form. The message of repentance, baptism in His name, and receiving the Holy Spirit forms the foundation of conversion.
Without this foundation, people are left with only fragments of the truth.
The Mission of the Early Church
Before sending His disciples into the world, the Lord Jesus gave them a command. They were to remain in Jerusalem until they received the Holy Spirit, the divine teacher who would guide them into all truth.
After receiving this gift, they began preaching the message of repentance and baptism in the name of the Lord Jesus for the remission of sins.
From Jerusalem, this message was meant to spread to the entire world.
Those who believed and were baptized would be saved. Those who rejected the message would remain outside the promise of salvation.
Our Responsibility Today
The apostles could not personally reach every generation. Their message continues today through those who remain faithful to their teaching.
They warned that their foundation could not be changed. Anyone who brought a different doctrine was to be rejected.
This places a responsibility on every believer. We must preserve and proclaim the original message of the gospel.
Today, many teachings avoid the central truths of the Bible. They speak about spirituality but avoid the name and authority of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Yet the question remains:
Is it important to proclaim His name?
The answer is clear. It is not only important—it is essential for the salvation of humanity.
