Think back to your childhood.

Can you still remember encouraging words from a parent, teacher, or friend?

Now think about painful words.

Sadly, many people remember those even more clearly.

Words are invisible, but their effects are not.

One careless comment can destroy someone’s confidence.

One encouraging conversation can stop someone from giving up.

This is why understanding the power of life and death is so important.

The Bible Says Our Words Reveal Our Hearts

The Lord Jesus Christ said:

“For of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaketh.” (Luke 6:45)

In other words, our mouths reveal what already lives inside us.

Imagine an apple tree.

A healthy tree produces healthy fruit.

A diseased tree produces poor fruit.

Likewise, our speech reveals the condition of our hearts.

When bitterness fills our hearts, bitterness comes out.

When forgiveness fills our hearts, grace comes out.

When love fills our hearts, encouragement naturally follows.

The Fruit of the Holy Spirit Changes Our Speech

As we remain close to the Lord Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit produces fruit in our lives.

That fruit includes:

• Love
• Joy
• Peace
• Patience
• Kindness
• Goodness
• Faithfulness
• Gentleness
• Self-control

Notice that self-control is included.

The Holy Spirit enables us to pause before speaking.

He reminds us to choose words that heal instead of hurt.

Eventually, speaking life becomes our new lifestyle.

1. Pause Before You Speak

Ask yourself:

“Will these words help or hurt?”

Even a five-second pause can prevent lasting damage.

2. Fill Your Heart with Scripture

The more Scripture fills your heart, the more biblical truth fills your conversations.

Healthy hearts produce healthy speech.

3. Pray Before Difficult Conversations

Invite the Lord Jesus Christ to guide your words.

He knows exactly what someone needs to hear.

4. Replace Criticism with Encouragement

Instead of pointing out someone’s failures, recognize their strengths.

Encouragement builds confidence.

5. Apologize Quickly

Everyone slips.

When you speak carelessly, admit it immediately.

Humility restores broken relationships.

Your Words Can Change Someone’s Future

Never underestimate your influence.

A simple compliment.

A sincere prayer.

A kind message.

A word of forgiveness.

A statement of hope.

These simple acts may become turning points in another person’s life.
