Life can change quickly.

However, the unexpected does not have to destroy your faith.

I have learned through Christian writing, Bible study, and teaching that one of the greatest challenges believers face is not knowing what comes next. We want answers. We want timelines. We want certainty.

Yet sometimes the Lord Jesus Christ does not show us the entire road.

Instead, He shows us the next step.

Therefore, in this article, we will examine what it means when we say the Lord Jesus Christ guides our life. We will look at how we should respond when our plans change, how we can submit our dreams to Him, and how we can learn to trust Him even when we cannot see the future.

Most importantly, we will discover that Christian guidance is not about knowing everything that will happen tomorrow. It is about trusting the One who already knows tomorrow.

Unexpected Things Happen in Life

First, we must accept a simple truth.

Unexpected things happen.

We can make plans for our education. We can plan our careers. We can prepare for marriage. We can save money. We can build businesses. We can make retirement plans.

Nevertheless, none of us knows everything that tomorrow will bring.

Consider a young man named Michael.

Michael had his entire future planned. He finished school, found a good job, and expected to remain with the company for many years.

Then one afternoon, his manager called him into the office.

The company was restructuring.

Michael lost his job.

Suddenly, the plan he had carefully built seemed to disappear.

At first, Michael became afraid. Then he became frustrated. Finally, he asked a question many of us have asked:

“What am I going to do now?”

Maybe you have asked that question yourself.

Maybe your situation does not involve employment. Perhaps you are dealing with a relationship, financial pressure, family concerns, career decisions, or an unexpected change in your future.

Whatever the situation may be, remember this:

An unexpected event is never unexpected to the Lord Jesus Christ.

We may not know what is coming.

He does.

We may not see the entire road.

He does.

We may not understand why something happened.

He can still lead us through it.

We Cannot See Tomorrow, But the Lord Jesus Christ Can

Next, we need to understand the difference between our knowledge and His knowledge.

Our knowledge is limited.

We know what happened yesterday. We understand some things about today. However, tomorrow remains hidden from us.

The Lord Jesus Christ does not have that limitation.

Scripture teaches us that He knows all things.

Therefore, when we trust Him, we are not trusting someone who is guessing about our future.

We are trusting the One who knows the beginning and the end.

That truth should change how we approach our plans.

Instead of saying, “I know exactly what must happen,” we can say:

“Lord Jesus Christ, I have a plan, but I trust You with the outcome.”

That is faith.

Faith does not mean that we stop planning.

Instead, faith means that we refuse to place our plans above His will.

The Lord Jesus Christ Can Direct Our Steps

One of the most beautiful principles of Christian living is found in Proverbs 3:5-6.

The KJV teaches:

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”

Then Scripture continues by teaching us to acknowledge Him in all our ways.

Notice the order.

Trust first.

Acknowledge Him next.

Then allow Him to direct your path.

This principle matters because our understanding can sometimes mislead us.

We may look at a situation and think:

“This is the perfect opportunity.”

Yet the Lord Jesus Christ may know something we cannot see.

Likewise, we may look at another situation and think:

“This is a terrible setback.”

Yet the Lord Jesus Christ may use that very situation to move us in another direction.

Therefore, we should not judge our entire future by one difficult moment.

A closed door is not necessarily the end of your story.

Sometimes it is simply a change of direction.

Your Plans Are Important, But His Will Comes First

Now, does trusting the Lord Jesus Christ mean that you should stop making plans?

No.

Planning is valuable.

You should think about your future. You should set goals. You should work hard. You should prepare for opportunities. You should make wise financial and family decisions.

However, there is an important difference between making plans and demanding that your plans happen exactly as you imagined them.

James 4:14 reminds us that we do not know what tomorrow will bring.

Therefore, we should hold our plans with humility.

You can say:

“Lord Jesus Christ, this is what I desire. Nevertheless, if You want to change my direction, I am willing to follow You.”

That prayer requires trust.

It also requires surrender.

What Happens When the Lord Jesus Christ Changes Your Direction?

Sometimes His guidance does not look like what we expected.

For example, you may apply for a particular job and not receive it.

You may want to move to a particular city, but circumstances prevent it.

You may dream about building one career, but another opportunity opens.

You may pray for a relationship to continue, but eventually that relationship ends.

At first, these experiences can hurt.

However, we must remember that our limited view cannot compete with His perfect knowledge.

Think about driving through unfamiliar territory.

You may have a destination in mind. However, you do not know every road ahead.

Suddenly, your navigation system tells you to turn.

You may wonder why.

Perhaps there is construction ahead.

Perhaps there is an accident.

Perhaps the road is closed.

You cannot see the problem yet.

However, the system has information you do not have.

In a similar way, the Lord Jesus Christ can redirect our steps when we cannot see what lies ahead.

Therefore, trust His direction even when you do not understand every turn.

How Do You Know If You Are Following His Guidance?

This question deserves careful attention.

Many people want the Lord Jesus Christ to guide their lives. Yet they sometimes expect His guidance to come through dramatic signs.

However, biblical guidance begins with Scripture.

The Word teaches us how to live.

It teaches us to walk in righteousness. It teaches us to love others. It teaches us to forgive. It teaches us to avoid sin. It teaches us to live by faith.

Therefore, when you seek direction, begin with prayer and Scripture.

Then ask yourself:

• Does this decision agree with biblical truth?
• Am I acting from faith or fear?
• Am I pursuing this because of pride?
• Am I willing to accept a different answer?
• Have I sincerely prayed about this decision?
• Am I trying to force a door open?
• Would I still make this decision if nobody applauded me?

These questions can expose motives that we sometimes overlook.

Don’t Let Fear Make Your Decisions

Furthermore, fear can become a terrible decision-maker.

Fear says:

“What if everything goes wrong?”

Faith says:

“The Lord Jesus Christ will lead me one step at a time.”

Fear says:

“You must know exactly what will happen.”

Faith says:

“You can trust the One who knows what will happen.”

Fear tells us to control everything.

Faith teaches us to surrender everything we cannot control.

Of course, this does not mean we ignore wisdom.

Instead, we pray, study Scripture, seek wise counsel, examine the facts, and then move forward in faith.

Faith and wisdom work together.

Psalm 37:23 Gives Us Encouragement

Psalm 37:23 provides a powerful reminder about divine direction:

“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD: and he delighteth in his way.”

What a powerful picture.

Notice the word steps.

The Scripture does not say that we always receive the entire map.

It speaks about steps.

That means we may need to walk one step at a time.

Today, you may only know today’s step.

Tomorrow, the next step may become clear.

Therefore, do not become discouraged because you cannot see ten years into the future.

You do not need to see the whole staircase to take the next step.

You need faith for the step in front of you.

A Simple Way to Submit Your Plans to the Lord Jesus Christ

If you want the Lord Jesus Christ to guide your life, begin with surrender.

Try this simple process.

1. Write Down Your Plans

Take a sheet of paper.

Write down your major goals.

Include your family plans, career plans, financial goals, ministry dreams, personal goals, and other important desires.

Be honest.

Write down what you really want.

2. Pray Over Every Plan

Next, bring those plans before the Lord Jesus Christ.

Do not simply ask Him to bless what you have already decided.

Instead, ask Him to correct you if necessary.

You can pray:

“Lord Jesus Christ, I give You my plans. If they agree with Your will, help me move forward. If they do not, give me the courage to change direction.”

3. Search the Scriptures

Then compare your desires with biblical principles.

Scripture should shape our decisions.

Our desires should not replace Scripture.

4. Be Willing to Change

This step can be difficult.

Sometimes we want His blessing without wanting His correction.

However, genuine surrender means saying:

“Your will is more important than my preference.”

5. Take the Next Step

Finally, move forward.

Do not remain frozen because you do not know everything.

Pray.

Prepare.

Act wisely.

Then trust the Lord Jesus Christ with the outcome.

What If You Already Made the Wrong Decision?

Perhaps you are reading this and thinking:

“I have already made mistakes.”

Maybe you ignored wise counsel.

Maybe you rushed into something.

Maybe you followed your emotions instead of prayer.

Maybe you chose your own way.

If that describes you, do not give up.

Turn back to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Repent where repentance is needed.

Ask for forgiveness.

Ask for wisdom.

Then allow Him to lead you forward.

Your mistake does not have to become your permanent destination.

The Lord Jesus Christ can redirect a surrendered life.

A Story of Surrender

Imagine Sarah.

Sarah dreamed of starting a business. She worked for years toward that goal.

Eventually, she received an opportunity.

Everything looked perfect.

However, after praying about it, she felt deeply unsettled.

She wanted the opportunity so badly that she almost ignored that concern.

Then she discovered information that she had not known before. The partnership contained serious problems.

Suddenly, she understood why the opportunity had not worked out.

Sarah later said:

“At the time, I thought the closed door was a disappointment. Later, I realized it was protection.”

We should be careful with stories like this.

Not every disappointment will immediately reveal an obvious reason.

Sometimes we may never understand why something happened.

Nevertheless, we can still trust the Lord Jesus Christ.

Our faith does not depend on understanding every event.

Our faith depends on knowing who He is.

However, it is not uncertain to Him.

Therefore, you can trust Him.

2. His Direction May Look Different From Your Plan

Do not assume that a changed plan means a failed life.

Sometimes a change in direction becomes part of your testimony.

Therefore, remain willing to follow Him.

3. You Only Need to Take the Next Step

You do not need tomorrow’s strength today.

You need today’s grace for today’s journey.

Therefore, pray for today’s direction and take today’s step.

Stop Trying to Control What You Cannot Control

Ultimately, this message comes down to trust.

We often want complete control because control makes us feel safe.

However, life constantly reminds us that we cannot control everything.

We cannot control every person’s decisions.

We cannot control every circumstance.

We cannot control every opportunity.

We cannot control tomorrow.

But we can choose whom we trust.

Therefore, instead of exhausting yourself trying to control the future, surrender the future to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Make your plans.

Work hard.

Use wisdom.

Prepare carefully.

Then place the outcome in His hands.

That is where peace begins.

A Prayer for Divine Guidance

Lord Jesus Christ,

I give You my plans, my dreams, my fears, and my future.

I confess that I cannot see everything that lies ahead. However, You know the way.

Therefore, guide my steps.

Give me wisdom when I must make decisions. Give me patience when I must wait. Give me courage when You ask me to move forward.

Reveal the desires in my heart that do not agree with Your will.

Help me release anything that You are asking me to surrender.

When a door closes, help me trust You.

When a new door opens, help me walk through it with wisdom.

When I do not understand, help me remain faithful.

Most importantly, teach me to trust You more than I trust my own understanding.

Lord Jesus Christ, lead my life and order my steps according to Your will.

Amen.

Do not tell the Lord Jesus Christ what the answer must be.

Instead, ask Him to lead you.

Afterward, pay attention to what Scripture teaches, seek wise counsel when appropriate, and remain willing to follow His direction.

Remember, the Lord Jesus Christ guides our life one step at a time.

You may not know what tomorrow holds.

You may not understand why every door opens or closes.

You may not see how every piece of your life will fit together.

Nevertheless, you can trust Him.

He knows the way.

He sees what you cannot see.

He can direct your steps.

And when you place your plans into His hands, you can move forward with faith.

Final Thought

Perhaps your life does not look the way you expected.

Perhaps your plans changed.

Perhaps you are standing at a crossroads right now.

If so, do not assume that your story is over.

Instead, place your future into the hands of the Lord Jesus Christ.

You may not know the next ten steps.

That is okay.

You only need to faithfully take the next one.

Trust Him. Follow Him. Pray. Listen. Move when He leads.

Because when the Lord Jesus Christ guides your life, you never have to walk the journey alone.
