Pursue What Matters Most: 5 Simple Steps to Put the Lord Jesus Christ First

Have you ever reached the end of a busy day and realized that you spent hours doing everything except what mattered most? You answered messages. You handled responsibilities. You worried about tomorrow. You helped other people. Yet, somehow, you still felt spiritually empty.

If that sounds familiar, you are not alone.

As a Christian writer and Bible teacher, I have learned that the problem is not always that we do not love the lord Jesus Christ. Sometimes, we simply allow everything else to become louder than His voice.

Therefore, this article will help you change that pattern.

You will discover five simple steps to put Jesus first in your life. These steps do not require a perfect schedule. They do not require hours of free time. Instead, they give you practical ways to pursue what matters most, starting today.

What Matters Most?

Life constantly competes for our attention.

Work needs our attention. Family needs our attention. Bills need our attention. Social media wants our attention. News demands our attention. Even our personal goals can become so important that we forget why we are pursuing them.

Consequently, we can become busy without becoming spiritually stronger.

Jesus taught His followers to seek the kingdom first and trust Him with the things they need. The issue, therefore, is not whether we have responsibilities. The issue is what sits at the center of our lives.

The lord Jesus Christ should not simply become another item on our daily schedule.

He should be the center of it.

When we put Jesus first, our other priorities can begin to fall into their proper places.

A Story Many of Us Understand

Imagine a man named Michael.

Michael loves the lord Jesus Christ. He attends church. He reads his Bible when he can. He prays before meals. He wants to grow spiritually.

However, Michael wakes up every morning and immediately checks his phone.

Then he checks his email.

Next, he looks at the news.

After that, he starts thinking about work.

Before he knows it, the morning has disappeared.

Michael has not rejected Jesus. He has simply allowed other things to receive his first attention.

Eventually, he notices something.

His Bible is getting dusty.

His prayers are becoming shorter.

His peace is becoming weaker.

His worries are becoming louder.

So Michael makes a simple decision.

He will pursue what matters most.

He does not begin with a complicated spiritual program. Instead, he starts with five simple habits.

You can do the same.

1. Give Thanks

“We give thanks to you, O God; we give thanks, for your name is near. We recount your wondrous deeds.”
— Psalms 75:1 ESV

First, begin with gratitude.

Gratitude changes the direction of our attention.

When we constantly focus on what is missing, we can overlook what the lord Jesus Christ has already done.

However, when we give thanks, we remember His faithfulness.

Think about it.

You woke up today.

You have another opportunity to pray.

You have another opportunity to read Scripture.

You have another opportunity to love someone.

You have another opportunity to serve.

You have another opportunity to grow.

Therefore, before you ask for something new, take time to thank the lord Jesus Christ for what He has already done.

Try This Today

Take two minutes.

Then write down three things for which you are thankful.

They do not have to be big things.

You might write:

  • Thank You for another day.
  • Thank You for my family.
  • Thank You for Your mercy.
  • Thank You for giving me strength.
  • Thank You for never leaving me.

Then remember a time when the lord Jesus Christ helped you through something difficult.

Finally, tell someone else about His faithfulness.

That simple practice can help you pursue what matters most instead of constantly chasing what you think you need.

2. Spend Five Minutes in Silence

“Abide in me, and I in you.”
— John 15:4 ESV

Next, become still.

This step may sound easy.

Yet, for many people, silence feels uncomfortable.

We live in a noisy world.

Phones ring.

Televisions talk.

Notifications appear.

People post opinions.

News updates arrive constantly.

Consequently, our minds rarely experience true quiet.

However, intimacy with Jesus requires our attention.

You do not have to spend an entire morning in silence.

Start with five minutes.

Sit somewhere quiet.

Put your phone away.

Take a slow breath.

Then focus your heart on the lord Jesus Christ.

You can simply say:

“Lord Jesus Christ, I give this moment to You.”

Then become still.

You do not need to impress Him with complicated words.

You simply need to make room for Him.

The Five-Minute Challenge

Try this tomorrow morning:

Minute 1: Become quiet.

Minute 2: Thank the lord Jesus Christ.

Minute 3: Give Him your worries.

Minute 4: Think about His goodness.

Minute 5: Ask Him to guide your day.

Then continue with your normal responsibilities.

Five quiet minutes can become a powerful part of your daily devotion.

3. Remember Whose You Are

“You are not your own, for you were bought with a price.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:19–20 ESV

Next, remember your identity.

Many people allow their circumstances to define them.

A failed business deal can make someone feel like a failure.

A broken relationship can make someone feel unwanted.

A financial struggle can make someone feel hopeless.

A mistake can make someone believe that they have no future.

However, your worst moment does not have to become your identity.

The lord Jesus Christ paid an enormous price for you.

Therefore, remember whose you are.

You belong to Him.

Replace Negative Thoughts

Suppose you wake up thinking:

“I cannot handle today.”

Stop.

Instead, remember that the lord Jesus Christ is with you.

Suppose you think:

“I have failed too many times.”

Stop.

Remember that failure does not have to be the end of your story.

Suppose you think:

“I am alone.”

Stop.

Turn your attention toward the lord Jesus Christ.

This does not mean ignoring real problems.

Instead, it means facing those problems from a position of faith.

That is an important part of spiritual growth.

4. Meditate on the Word

“Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day.”
— Psalms 119:97 ESV

Next, open your Bible.

If you want to know how the lord Jesus Christ wants you to live, spend time in His Word.

Bible reading should not become something we do simply to check a box.

Instead, Scripture should shape our thoughts, choices, attitudes, and actions.

That is why Bible study matters.

You do not need to read five chapters every morning.

Start small.

Read a few verses.

Slow down.

Ask questions.

Think about what you have read.

Then ask how you can apply it.

Ask These Four Questions

When you read Scripture, ask:

  1. What does this passage teach me?
  2. What does it reveal about the lord Jesus Christ?
  3. What needs to change in my life?
  4. What can I practice today?

For example, if you read about forgiveness, do not stop at understanding the definition.

Think about someone you need to forgive.

Then ask the lord Jesus Christ to help you take the next step.

That is how Bible study becomes practical Christian living.

5. Focus on What Is Excellent

“…If there is any excellence … think about these things.”
— Philippians 4:8 ESV

Finally, guard what you allow into your mind.

Your thoughts influence your actions.

Your actions become habits.

Your habits can shape your character.

Therefore, what you repeatedly think about matters.

Philippians 4:8 gives Christians a powerful filter for their thoughts.

Ask yourself:

Is this true?

Is this honorable?

Is this just?

Is this pure?

Is this lovely?

Is this commendable?

Is this excellent?

Is this worthy of praise?

This does not mean pretending that problems do not exist.

Instead, it means refusing to allow negative thoughts to control your entire life.

Watch What Feeds Your Mind

For example, imagine that you spend an hour reading angry comments online every night.

Then you wonder why you cannot sleep peacefully.

Something is feeding your thoughts.

Now imagine replacing part of that time with Scripture, prayer, worship, or encouraging Christian content.

Your circumstances may not immediately change.

However, your focus can change.

That is why Christian inspiration should not merely make us feel good for a few minutes.

It should help us think differently and live differently.

The Five-Step Daily Practice

Now bring everything together.

Each day, practice these five habits:

1. Give Thanks.
Remember the faithfulness of the lord Jesus Christ.

2. Spend Five Minutes in Silence.
Slow down and focus your heart on Him.

3. Remember Whose You Are.
Do not allow your circumstances to define you.

4. Meditate on the Word.
Read Scripture and apply it to your life.

5. Focus on What Is Excellent.
Guard your thoughts and pursue what honors Jesus.

Notice something important.

None of these steps requires a perfect life.

They simply require intentionality.

What Happens When We Put Jesus First?

When you put Jesus first, you begin changing your priorities.

You may become more thankful.

You may become more patient.

You may become more careful about what you watch and hear.

You may become quicker to forgive.

You may become more willing to serve.

You may also discover that your definition of success begins to change.

Instead of asking only, “How much can I accomplish?”

You may begin asking, “How can I honor the lord Jesus Christ today?”

That is a much deeper question.

Do Not Wait for the Perfect Time

One of the greatest traps in spiritual life is waiting for the perfect moment.

You might say:

“I will start praying when things calm down.”

“I will read my Bible when I have more time.”

“I will focus on Jesus when work becomes easier.”

“I will become more consistent next month.”

However, life rarely becomes completely calm.

There will always be another responsibility.

There will always be another appointment.

There will always be another problem.

Therefore, start where you are.

Give thanks today.

Spend five minutes in silence today.

Read Scripture today.

Think about what is excellent today.

Pursue the lord Jesus Christ today.

A Simple 7-Day Challenge

Now let us make this practical.

For the next seven days, try this simple challenge.

Day 1

Write down five things for which you are thankful.

Day 2

Spend five minutes in silence with the lord Jesus Christ.

Day 3

Write down biblical truths that remind you of your identity in Christ.

Day 4

Read a short Bible passage and write down one lesson you can apply.

Day 5

Identify one negative thought pattern that you need to surrender.

Day 6

Replace 15 minutes of distracting content with Scripture, prayer, or worship.

Day 7

Review the week and write down what changed.

Then start again.

Small habits can produce meaningful spiritual growth when we practice them consistently.

☐ Too much work or too little time
☐ Phone and social media distractions
☐ Worry and stress
☐ Lack of spiritual discipline
☐ Family responsibilities
☐ Something else

Share your answer and encourage someone else who may be facing the same struggle.

Personal Reflection Survey

Take a moment and rate yourself from 1 to 5:

1 = I rarely do this.
5 = I practice this consistently.

  • Giving thanks: ___ / 5
  • Spending quiet time with Jesus: ___ / 5
  • Remembering my identity in Christ: ___ / 5
  • Reading and meditating on Scripture: ___ / 5
  • Focusing on excellent and praiseworthy things: ___ / 5

Now look at your lowest number.

That may be the place where you should begin.

You do not have to change everything today.

Start with one step.

Pursue What Matters Most

The world will always give you something else to pursue.

More money.

More recognition.

More success.

More entertainment.

More possessions.

More followers.

More approval.

Yet, none of those things can replace intimacy with the lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus gave His life for us.

Therefore, our response should not be casual.

We should want our lives to reflect His love, His truth, His character, and His purpose.

Romans 12:1 teaches believers to present their bodies as a living sacrifice and to offer their lives to the lord Jesus Christ.

That means our faith belongs in everyday life.

It belongs in our homes.

It belongs at work.

It belongs in our relationships.

It belongs in our choices.

It belongs in our thoughts.

It belongs in our priorities.

Most importantly, it belongs at the center of our lives.

So, do not simply ask, “What do I want today?”

Instead, ask:

“Lord Jesus Christ, what matters most to You?”

Then pursue it.

Give thanks.

Be still.

Remember whose you are.

Meditate on Scripture.

Focus on what is excellent.

Finally, keep walking with Him.

Because when you pursue what matters most, you begin to discover that the greatest treasure was never found in having more.

It was found in knowing Jesus more deeply.

A Prayer to End Your Day

Lord Jesus Christ, thank You for giving me another day.

Thank You for Your mercy, Your love, and Your faithfulness.

Help me put You first.

Teach me to become still when life becomes noisy.

Remind me of whose I am when circumstances make me afraid.

Give me a hunger for Your Word.

Help me guard my thoughts and pursue what is true, pure, excellent, and worthy of praise.

Above everything else, help me live a life that honors You.

Guide my thoughts.

Guide my words.

Guide my choices.

Guide my steps.

Lord Jesus Christ, help me pursue what matters most.

Amen.

Final Challenge

Today, do not try to change your entire life overnight.

Instead, choose one of these five steps and practice it before the day ends.

Then tomorrow, do it again.

Little by little, your habits can change.

Your focus can change.

Your priorities can change.

And as you continue pursuing the lord Jesus Christ, your life can increasingly reflect what truly matters most.
