God Our Rock: Why You Can Trust the Lord Jesus Christ When Life Is Uncertain

When Everything Around You Is Moving, Where Do You Stand?

Have you ever reached a point where everything seemed unstable?

Maybe your finances changed. Perhaps a relationship fell apart. Maybe your health, career, family, or future suddenly became uncertain. You prayed, but the situation did not change as quickly as you hoped.

Where do you turn when life feels like it is shaking beneath your feet?

That question matters because life constantly changes. People change. Circumstances change. Plans change. Even things we thought were secure can suddenly disappear.

However, there is One who does not change.

The Lord Jesus Christ is our Rock.

As a Christian writer and teacher, I have learned that one of the greatest sources of strength in difficult seasons is knowing who Jesus Christ really is and remembering what He has already done. Today, we will look at Psalm 18 and discover why the Lord Jesus Christ can be trusted when everything else feels uncertain.

Most importantly, we will see how knowing Him as our Rock, our fortress, and our deliverer can change the way we face difficult seasons.

David Knew What It Meant to Need a Rock

Psalm 18 begins with powerful words from David:

“I will love thee, O LORD, my strength.”
— Psalm 18:1, KJV

David did not write these words from a place of comfort alone.

He had experienced danger. He had faced enemies. He had known fear. He had spent years running from people who wanted to destroy him.

Yet, after the Lord Jesus Christ delivered him, David looked back and recognized something important.

His security had never depended entirely on his circumstances.

His security rested in the One who was greater than his circumstances.

Therefore, David continued:

“The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.”
— Psalm 18:2, KJV

These words reveal several powerful descriptions of the Lord Jesus Christ.

He is our Rock.

He is our Fortress.

He is our Deliverer.

He is our Strength.

He is our Shield.

He is our Salvation.

He is our High Tower.

Therefore, when we study Psalm 18, we are not simply reading David’s story.

We are discovering a truth that still applies to believers today.

What Does It Mean That Jesus Christ Is Our Rock?

A rock represents stability.

When everything else moves, a solid rock remains.

That picture gives us a beautiful understanding of what it means to trust the Lord Jesus Christ.

Our lives may change from one season to another. However, Jesus Christ remains faithful.

The writer of Hebrews gives us this powerful reminder:

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”
— Hebrews 13:8, KJV

Notice the words: yesterday, today, and forever.

That means Jesus Christ is not dependable only when life is going well.

He is dependable when life becomes difficult.

He is not faithful only when we understand what He is doing.

He remains faithful when we have questions.

He does not become our Rock only after the storm passes.

He is our Rock during the storm.

The World Keeps Changing

Every day brings something new.

Technology changes.

Economies change.

Political situations change.

Jobs change.

Families experience changes.

Children grow up.

Friends move away.

Opportunities come and go.

Even our own plans can change within a few hours.

Consequently, we can easily become anxious when we build our confidence on things that are constantly moving.

For example, imagine building a house on loose sand.

At first, everything might look fine.

The house may look beautiful. The walls may look strong. The rooms may be comfortable.

However, when the storm arrives, the foundation becomes the real issue.

The same principle applies spiritually.

A difficult season reveals what we have been standing on.

If we build our confidence entirely on money, money can disappear.

If we build our identity entirely on our career, our position can change.

If we build our security entirely on people, people can disappoint us.

However, when we build our lives on the Lord Jesus Christ, we stand on a foundation that cannot be moved.

Jesus Christ Is Our Fortress

David did not call the Lord only his Rock.

He also called Him his fortress.

A fortress provides protection.

In David’s time, a fortress offered a place of safety when enemies attacked. It provided walls, shelter, and a position of strength.

Spiritually, we can run to the Lord Jesus Christ when life attacks us.

That does not mean Christians will never experience trouble.

Instead, it means trouble does not have the final word.

Jesus told His disciples:

“These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”
— John 16:33, KJV

Notice that Jesus did not promise a life without trouble.

He promised something better.

He promised Himself.

We can have peace because He has overcome the world.

You Can Run to Your Rock

Consider a child who becomes frightened during a storm.

The child may hear thunder and immediately run toward a parent.

Why?

Because the child believes the parent can provide safety.

Likewise, when we face spiritual, emotional, financial, or personal storms, we can run to the Lord Jesus Christ.

We can pray.

We can worship.

We can read Scripture.

We can seek wise counsel.

We can ask the Lord Jesus Christ for strength.

Most importantly, we can refuse to let fear become our foundation.

Instead, we can make Jesus Christ our refuge.

Psalm 46:1 says:

“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”

Because you have asked that the focus remain on the Lord Jesus Christ, remember that the One Scripture identifies as our refuge is not distant from us.

The Lord Jesus Christ is our refuge.

He is our strength.

He is our present help.

Therefore, when trouble comes, run to the Rock.

You Don’t Need Physical Enemies to Need a Rock

David had physical enemies.

However, most of us will not experience the exact battles David faced.

Still, we experience other kinds of battles.

Sometimes the enemy is fear.

Sometimes it is discouragement.

Sometimes it is temptation.

Sometimes it is loneliness.

Sometimes it is financial pressure.

Sometimes it is uncertainty about the future.

Sometimes it is disappointment.

Sometimes it is simply exhaustion.

You may wake up one morning and feel like you cannot handle another problem.

That is precisely when you need to remember who your Rock is.

You do not have to pretend that everything is fine.

You do not have to deny your pain.

Instead, you can bring your pain to Jesus Christ.

You can say:

“Lord Jesus, I need You. Be my strength today.”

That simple prayer can become the beginning of a powerful change in perspective.

Remember What Jesus Christ Has Already Done

One of the most important lessons from Psalm 18 is the importance of remembering.

David remembered his deliverance.

Then, he praised the Lord.

This gives us a practical principle:

Remembering what the Lord Jesus Christ has done can strengthen our faith for what we are facing now.

Think about your own life.

What doors has Jesus opened?

What dangers has He brought you through?

What prayers has He answered?

What strength has He given you?

What situations looked impossible at first but eventually worked out?

What lessons did you learn through difficult seasons?

Take a moment and remember.

Sometimes we become so focused on today’s problem that we forget yesterday’s deliverance.

However, your history with Jesus Christ can remind you that your current situation is not bigger than your Rock.

Praise Changes Our Perspective

David’s response to deliverance was praise.

That matters.

Praise does not mean that we pretend problems do not exist.

Instead, praise reminds us that our problems are not greater than the Lord Jesus Christ.

When we praise Him, we shift our attention.

We stop staring only at the storm.

Instead, we begin looking at the One who can carry us through it.

For example, you might say:

“Lord Jesus, I don’t understand everything happening right now, but I remember what You have already done. You brought me through yesterday, and I trust You with today.”

That is faith.

Faith does not require us to know every detail about tomorrow.

Faith requires us to know who holds tomorrow.

What Should You Do When Life Feels Unstable?

When life becomes difficult, consider these five practical steps.

1. Stop and Pray

Before allowing fear to control your thoughts, talk to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Tell Him exactly what you are facing.

You do not need impressive words.

Speak honestly.

2. Open Your Bible

When emotions become loud, Scripture can bring truth back into focus.

Read passages that remind you of the faithfulness, strength, and promises of Jesus Christ.

Psalm 18 is an excellent place to begin.

3. Remember Your Testimony

Think about previous situations where the Lord Jesus Christ helped you.

Write them down.

Keep a record of answered prayers and moments of deliverance.

Then, when another storm comes, you can look back and remember.

4. Refuse to Build Your Life on Fear

Fear makes today’s problem look bigger than tomorrow’s hope.

Therefore, do not allow fear to become your foundation.

Stand on the Word.

Stand on faith.

Stand on Jesus Christ.

5. Praise Before You See the Answer

Sometimes the answer does not come immediately.

Nevertheless, you can still praise the Lord Jesus Christ.

Praise Him because He is faithful.

Praise Him because He is your Rock.

Praise Him because He has carried you before.

Praise Him because He remains the same.

The Rock Is Bigger Than Your Storm

Imagine standing beside a massive mountain during a storm.

The wind may blow.

The rain may fall.

Thunder may shake the sky.

However, the mountain does not panic.

Why?

Because the storm is temporary.

The mountain remains.

In the same way, your current storm may feel overwhelming.

Nevertheless, your Rock is greater than your storm.

Your problem has a beginning.

Your problem has an end.

But the Lord Jesus Christ remains.

Therefore, do not measure the strength of your Rock by the size of your problem.

Instead, measure your problem by the greatness of your Rock.

What If You Feel Like Your Faith Is Weak?

Perhaps you are reading this and thinking, “I want to trust Jesus, but my faith feels weak.”

If that is you, remember this:

You do not have to manufacture perfect faith.

Bring your weakness to Jesus Christ.

The disciples once asked Jesus to increase their faith.

That shows us something important.

Faith can grow.

You can grow through prayer.

You can grow through Scripture.

You can grow through obedience.

You can grow through trials.

You can grow by remembering what Jesus Christ has already done.

Therefore, if your faith feels small today, do not run away from Jesus.

Run toward Him.

Your Rock Will Not Move

The world can change overnight.

Yet Jesus Christ does not change.

Hebrews 13:8 gives us the foundation:

“Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever.”

Yesterday, He was faithful.

Today, He is faithful.

Tomorrow, He will still be faithful.

Therefore, your circumstances may change without warning, but your Rock remains firm.

That is why you can trust Him.

That is why you can praise Him.

That is why you can keep moving forward.

Take a Moment to Thank the Lord Jesus Christ

Today, slow down for a few minutes.

Think about where you were five years ago.

Then think about where you are now.

Consider the challenges you survived.

Consider the doors that opened.

Consider the prayers that were answered.

Consider the times you thought you could not continue.

Yet, somehow, you continued.

Perhaps you did not understand everything.

Perhaps you cried along the way.

Perhaps you questioned what was happening.

Nevertheless, the Lord Jesus Christ remained faithful.

So today, say:

“Thank You, Lord Jesus, for being my Rock.”

Then, tell Him what you are thankful for.

Life will continue to change.

Some days will be easy.

Other days will be difficult.

Some prayers will receive quick answers.

Others may require patience.

Nevertheless, one thing remains certain.

The Lord Jesus Christ is our Rock.

When the world shifts, He remains.

When people disappoint us, He remains.

When circumstances change, He remains.

When we become afraid, He remains.

When we do not understand the future, He remains.

Therefore, do not build your life on something that can move.

Build your hope on Jesus Christ.

Run to Him when you are afraid.

Trust Him when you are uncertain.

Praise Him when you are waiting.

Remember Him when you are discouraged.

And when the storm finally passes, look back and say with David:

“The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer.”
— Psalm 18:2, KJV

Your circumstances may change.

Your feelings may change.

Your plans may change.

But your Rock does not move.

Stand firm.

Trust Jesus Christ.

And remember: You are standing on the Rock.
