Let There Be Light
Have you ever felt surrounded by darkness?
Perhaps you were facing a difficult season, struggling with fear, dealing with disappointment, or simply wondering which direction to take. I have learned that darkness does not have to control my life. When I allow the Lord Jesus Christ to lead me, His light gives me direction, hope, and strength.
The Bible begins with a powerful command: “Let there be light.” From that moment, light became a powerful picture of the presence, truth, and life that comes from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Today, I want to explore what it means to walk in His light, how to overcome spiritual darkness, and how we can become a light to the people around us.
Light Entered the Darkness
Genesis tells us that the earth was “without form, and void” and that darkness covered the deep. Then the Lord spoke.
“And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” — Genesis 1:3 KJV
The Lord did not need to fight the darkness. He simply commanded the light to appear.
That truth encourages me because sometimes my problems seem bigger than my ability to solve them. However, I do not have to create my own light. I need to turn toward the Lord Jesus.
Where His truth enters, confusion begins to leave. Where His presence enters, fear begins to lose its power. Where His Word enters, I can see the next step.
Therefore, when life feels dark, I should not give up. I should seek the light.
Jesus Is the Light of the World
The light in Genesis points us toward something much greater. Isaiah prophesied about a great light coming to people who walked in darkness.
“The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light.” — Isaiah 9:2 KJV
Jesus fulfilled this prophecy when He declared:
“I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.” — John 8:12 KJV
This statement changes everything.
Jesus did not say that He would merely show us where the light was. He said, “I am the light.”
Therefore, I do not have to search through the world looking for answers that can only be found in the Lord Jesus Christ. He is my light. He is my guide. He is my source of life.
When I follow Him, I do not have to walk blindly.
Darkness Cannot Defeat Light
Think about what happens when you enter a completely dark room and turn on a light.
The darkness does not push back.
Instead, the light immediately changes the room.
That simple example teaches me an important spiritual lesson. I cannot overcome darkness by becoming more comfortable with it. I overcome darkness by walking in the light of the Lord Jesus.
Sin brings spiritual darkness. Fear brings darkness. Hatred brings darkness. Deception brings darkness. Bitterness brings darkness.
However, truth brings light.
Forgiveness brings light.
Love brings light.
Righteous living brings light.
Most importantly, following the Lord Jesus brings light.
Therefore, I must examine my own life. I cannot ask the Lord Jesus to guide me while deliberately holding on to things that keep me in darkness.
I Must Choose to Walk in the Light
Paul gives us a direct challenge:
“For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.” — Ephesians 5:8 KJV
Notice that Paul does not merely say that I have received light.
He tells me to walk as a child of light.
That means my faith must become visible through my actions.
If I say that I follow Jesus, my words should reflect Him.
If I say that I follow Jesus, my attitude should reflect Him.
If I say that I follow Jesus, my decisions should reflect Him.
Therefore, walking in the light means living differently.
For example, when someone insults me, I can choose forgiveness instead of revenge. When someone lies about me, I can choose truth instead of retaliation. When someone needs encouragement, I can choose to speak life instead of criticism.
In this way, my daily life can point people toward the Lord Jesus.
What Happens When We Become a Light to Others?
A single candle can light another candle without losing its own flame.
That gives me a beautiful picture of Christian influence.
When the Lord Jesus changes my life, I should not keep that light to myself.
Someone around me may be discouraged.
Someone may be grieving.
Someone may be confused.
Someone may have walked away from the truth.
Someone may simply need to hear, “The Lord Jesus has not forgotten you.”
Therefore, I can become a light through a kind word, a prayer, an encouraging message, an act of service, or a faithful example.
I may never know how much one small act affects another person’s life.
The Problem: Allowing Darkness to Influence Me
One of the greatest dangers is becoming so accustomed to darkness that I stop noticing it.
When I constantly listen to negative voices, I can begin thinking negatively.
When I constantly consume worldly messages, they can influence my values.
When I constantly focus on fear, I can lose sight of faith.
Therefore, I must protect what enters my heart and mind.
I need the Word of the Lord.
I need prayer.
I need fellowship with believers.
I need to examine my choices.
Most importantly, I need to keep my eyes on Jesus.
The Solution: Keep Following the Light
I cannot control everything happening around me. However, I can control the direction in which I walk.
When I do not know what to do, I can pray.
When I feel afraid, I can trust the Lord Jesus.
When I am tempted, I can turn to His Word.
When I fall, I can repent and get back up.
When I become discouraged, I can remember His promises.
Therefore, I do not need to understand everything before taking the next step. I simply need to keep following the Light.
Psalm 119:105 says:
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.” — Psalm 119:105 KJV
A lamp does not always show me the entire road.
Instead, it gives me enough light for the next step.
That is often how the Lord Jesus leads me.
Let Your Light Shine
Jesus taught His followers to let their light shine before others.
“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” — Matthew 5:16 KJV
Therefore, I should ask myself three important questions:
How am I walking in the light of the Lord Jesus?
What darkness do I need to surrender to Him?
Who needs to see the light of Jesus through my life today?
I do not need a large platform to make a difference.
I can begin at home.
I can begin at work.
I can begin in my neighborhood.
I can begin with one conversation.
I can begin with one act of kindness.
I can begin today.
My Commitment to Walk in the Light
I choose to follow the Lord Jesus Christ.
I choose truth over deception.
I choose forgiveness over bitterness.
I choose faith over fear.
I choose love over hatred.
I choose obedience over compromise.
I choose to let His light shine through my words, actions, and decisions.
Most importantly, I choose not to allow the darkness around me to determine the light within me.
The world needs light.
My family needs light.
My community needs light.
And I can be part of that light when I faithfully follow the Lord Jesus Christ.
So today, let me make this personal:
I will walk in the light. I will follow the Lord Jesus. I will reject darkness. I will live according to His Word. And I will allow His light to shine through my life so that others can see Him.
Let there be light—not only around me, but also within me.
And then, let that light shine.

Final Encouragement
Darkness may surround us, but darkness does not have the final word.
The Lord Jesus Christ is the Light.
Therefore, keep following Him.
Keep trusting Him.
Keep obeying His Word.
Keep letting His light shine.
When the Lord Jesus is your light, you never have to walk through the darkness alone.
