Are You Ready for the Battle You Cannot See?
Imagine a doctor walking into an operating room without gloves, a mask, or the proper surgical tools. Imagine a firefighter entering a burning building without protective equipment. Imagine a soldier walking onto a battlefield without armor.
It would be dangerous.
More importantly, it would leave them unprepared to do their job.
The same principle applies to our spiritual lives.
Every day, we face challenges that we cannot always see. Some battles happen in our minds. Others happen in our relationships, families, workplaces, finances, and personal struggles. Sometimes, the greatest battle takes place inside our own hearts.
As a Christian writer and someone who has spent years studying Scripture and encouraging believers to stand firmly in their faith, I have learned an important lesson: we cannot wait until the battle begins to prepare for it.
Instead, we must get ready before the attack comes.
That is why the apostle Paul wrote about the armor of the Lord Jesus Christ in Ephesians 6.
Paul gave believers a clear instruction:
“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”
— Ephesians 6:11 KJV
The message is simple.
Get ready.
Do not wait until your faith is under pressure. Do not wait until temptation arrives. Do not wait until fear takes control.
Prepare today.
Why Spiritual Preparation Matters
First, we need to understand something important.
Being a Christian does not mean we will never face difficulties.
In fact, Scripture repeatedly prepares us for trials, temptation, opposition, and spiritual warfare.
However, the Lord Jesus Christ does not leave us defenseless.
He provides everything we need to stand.
Therefore, spiritual preparation should become part of our daily Christian life.
Think about an athlete.
An athlete does not wait until the championship race to start training. Instead, that athlete trains long before the competition begins.
Likewise, we should strengthen our faith before the crisis arrives.
We pray before we need the answer.
We study Scripture before confusion comes.
We build our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ before the storm begins.
We practice obedience before temptation arrives.
As a result, we become better prepared to stand when life becomes difficult.
The Battle Is Often Invisible
One reason spiritual battles can become difficult is that we cannot always see them.
You may see an argument.
However, you may not see the fear, anger, pride, bitterness, or temptation working behind it.
You may see discouragement.
However, you may not recognize how quickly discouragement can attack your faith.
You may see a difficult circumstance.
However, you may not recognize how easily that circumstance can cause you to doubt the promises of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, we must learn to look beyond the immediate problem.
Ephesians 6:12 reminds us that our struggle is not merely against flesh and blood.
That means we should not treat every person as our enemy.
Instead, we must recognize the spiritual nature of the battle.
This changes how we respond.
Rather than attacking people, we pray.
Rather than returning hatred for hatred, we show love.
Rather than allowing fear to control us, we trust the Lord Jesus Christ.
Rather than surrendering to temptation, we stand upon the truth of Scripture.
The Armor Is Available
Here is the encouraging part.
The Lord Jesus Christ has not asked us to fight spiritual battles without protection.
Paul describes several pieces of spiritual armor in Ephesians 6.
Each piece teaches us something important about living by faith.
1. Put On the Belt of Truth
Paul first describes the belt of truth.
Truth provides stability.
In everyday life, lies can create confusion. They can damage relationships. They can distort our thinking.
Spiritually, false ideas can also weaken our faith.
Therefore, we must know the truth of Scripture.
Jesus said:
“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
— John 8:32 KJV
Truth gives us something solid to stand on.
When emotions change, truth remains.
When circumstances change, truth remains.
When people disappoint us, truth remains.
Therefore, put on truth every day.
Read Scripture.
Study it.
Believe it.
Live it.
2. Put On the Breastplate of Righteousness
Next, Paul speaks about the breastplate of righteousness.
A breastplate protects the vital organs.
Likewise, righteous living protects our spiritual lives.
This does not mean that we save ourselves through our own goodness.
Instead, it means that we should allow the Lord Jesus Christ to produce righteous living in us.
Our choices matter.
Our words matter.
Our attitudes matter.
Our relationships matter.
For example, imagine someone insults you.
Your first reaction may be anger.
However, the armor of righteousness reminds you to pause.
Instead of responding with another insult, you choose wisdom.
Instead of seeking revenge, you choose forgiveness.
Instead of allowing anger to control you, you allow the Lord Jesus Christ to control your response.
That is spiritual preparation.
3. Prepare Your Feet With the Gospel of Peace
Paul also tells believers to have their feet prepared with the gospel of peace.
That is powerful.
Your feet represent movement.
Therefore, our faith should move us.
We should not merely talk about Christianity.
We should live it.
We should carry the message of Jesus Christ into our homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, churches, and communities.
Furthermore, we should become people who bring peace.
That does not mean avoiding every difficult conversation.
Instead, it means handling difficult situations with wisdom, grace, truth, and love.
Sometimes the strongest Christian response is not the loudest one.
Sometimes it is a calm word.
Sometimes it is forgiveness.
Sometimes it is walking away from an argument.
Sometimes it is praying for someone who has hurt you.
4. Take Up the Shield of Faith
Next comes the shield of faith.
This may be one of the most relatable pieces of spiritual armor.
Why?
Because life will give you plenty of reasons to become discouraged.
You may pray and not see an immediate answer.
You may work hard and still experience setbacks.
You may love people who disappoint you.
You may face sickness, financial pressure, family problems, rejection, or uncertainty.
During those moments, faith becomes your shield.
Faith says:
“I cannot see everything, but I still trust the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Faith does not deny reality.
Instead, faith refuses to allow circumstances to become greater than the promises of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The shield of faith helps us extinguish the fiery darts of doubt, fear, temptation, and discouragement.
So when the enemy whispers, “You cannot make it,” faith answers, “The Lord Jesus Christ is with me.”
When fear says, “Everything is going to fall apart,” faith answers, “I will trust the Lord.”
When discouragement says, “Give up,” faith answers, “I will keep standing.”
5. Put On the Helmet of Salvation
The helmet protects the head.
Spiritually, this reminds us to guard our minds.
Our thoughts influence our words.
Our words influence our actions.
Our actions influence our habits.
Therefore, we must pay attention to what we allow into our minds.
Philippians 4:8 gives believers a powerful pattern for thinking about things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, and worthy of good report.
Consequently, we should ask ourselves:
What am I thinking about every day?
Are my thoughts filled with fear?
Am I constantly replaying past failures?
Am I allowing bitterness to grow?
Am I consuming things that weaken my faith?
Or am I filling my mind with Scripture, prayer, gratitude, truth, and encouragement?
Getting ready for spiritual battle includes getting our minds ready.
6. Take the Sword of the Spirit
Finally, Paul describes the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Unlike the other pieces of armor, the sword is an offensive weapon.
That reminds us that Scripture is not merely something we read on Sunday.
The Word equips us to respond.
Consider what happened when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness.
He responded to temptation with Scripture.
That example teaches us something important.
We need Scripture in our hearts before temptation arrives.
If you wait until the battle begins to learn what Scripture says, you may struggle to respond.
Therefore, study the Bible now.
Memorize verses.
Meditate on Scripture.
Speak the Word.
Live the Word.
Then, when the battle comes, you will have truth ready.
You Cannot Put on Armor You Refuse to Wear
Here is where the message becomes personal.
The armor is available.
However, we must put it on.
A firefighter can own protective equipment and still refuse to wear it.
A soldier can have armor and leave it behind.
Likewise, we can own several Bibles and still refuse to read them.
We can know how to pray and still refuse to pray.
We can know Scripture and still refuse to obey it.
We can hear truth and still choose deception.
Therefore, spiritual readiness requires intentional action.
You have to put on the armor.
You have to choose truth.
You have to choose righteousness.
You have to walk in peace.
You have to exercise faith.
You have to guard your mind.
You have to use Scripture.
What Does Getting Ready Look Like?
Getting ready does not always require something dramatic.
Sometimes it looks very simple.
It may look like waking up and praying before checking your phone.
It may mean reading a chapter of Scripture before starting your day.
It may mean refusing to participate in gossip.
It may mean forgiving someone.
It may mean apologizing when you are wrong.
It may mean turning off something that is damaging your spiritual life.
It may mean encouraging someone who feels discouraged.
It may mean choosing faith when fear would be easier.
These small decisions can strengthen your spiritual life.
Over time, they become habits.
And those habits help prepare you for larger battles.
A Story We Can All Understand
Imagine someone receiving a warning that a major storm is approaching.
They have several choices.
They can ignore the warning.
They can wait until the storm arrives.
Or they can prepare early.
They can secure the windows.
They can bring outdoor items inside.
They can charge their devices.
They can gather supplies.
They can prepare their family.
Then the storm arrives.
The preparation does not stop the storm.
However, it helps them endure it.
Spiritual preparation works the same way.
Prayer does not mean you will never face trouble.
Bible study does not mean you will never experience temptation.
Faith does not mean you will never have difficult days.
Instead, spiritual preparation helps you stand when the storm comes.
That is the purpose of the armor.
Do Not Wait Until the Battle Begins
Perhaps you are facing a battle right now.
Maybe you are struggling with fear.
Maybe you are dealing with family problems.
Maybe you are discouraged.
Maybe you are facing financial pressure.
Maybe someone has hurt you.
Maybe you are battling temptation.
Maybe you simply feel spiritually tired.
Whatever the situation, remember this:
You do not have to face the battle unprepared.
The Lord Jesus Christ has given you spiritual resources.
Therefore, start getting ready today.
Open your Bible.
Pray.
Seek truth.
Guard your mind.
Choose righteousness.
Walk in peace.
Lift up the shield of faith.
Stand firmly on the Word.
And remember that spiritual strength does not come from pretending that problems do not exist.
It comes from trusting the Lord Jesus Christ in the middle of them.

Before you begin your day, ask yourself:

☐ Am I choosing righteousness?
☐ Am I prepared to bring peace?
☐ Am I trusting the Lord Jesus Christ?
☐ Am I guarding my thoughts?

☐ Am I prepared to stand when temptation comes?

So, when fear comes, stand.
When temptation comes, stand.
When discouragement comes, stand.
When opposition comes, stand.
When uncertainty comes, stand.
Do not wait until the battle begins.
Get ready now.
The armor is available.
The Word is available.
Prayer is available.
Faith is available.
And the Lord Jesus Christ is with His people.
Stand firm. Stay ready. Keep the faith.
