A Way for Us to Rest: Trusting the Lord Jesus Christ in New Seasons
Have you ever started something new and wondered, “How is this going to work out?”
Maybe you started a new job. Maybe you entered a new relationship. Perhaps you began a new project, moved to a new place, or simply stepped into a season of life you had never experienced before.
New beginnings can feel exciting. However, they can also create fear and uncertainty.
You may not know what is coming. You may not know what you will need. You may not know how long the journey will take.
Yet, there is good news for every Christian who faces an uncertain future.
You do not have to know everything about the road ahead to trust the One who leads you.
As a Christian writer and teacher, I have learned that faith does not mean having every answer before taking the next step. Instead, faith means trusting the Lord Jesus Christ when the answers are not yet clear.
Today, we will look at how the Lord Jesus Christ made a way for His people to rest. We will see how He provided for Israel in the wilderness, and we will discover how that same truth can encourage us when we enter a new season.
A New Season Can Feel Intimidating
Starting something new often brings questions.
Will I have enough?
Will I make the right decision?
What if something goes wrong?
What if I fail?
What if I cannot handle what comes next?
These questions can quickly steal our peace.
For example, imagine accepting a new job in another city. You know the opportunity could be good, but you do not know your new coworkers. You do not know the area. You do not know the challenges you will face.
At first, excitement fills your heart.
Then, uncertainty begins to speak.
“What if this does not work out?”
That is where faith becomes important.
Instead of allowing uncertainty to control us, we can remember that the Lord Jesus Christ already knows the road ahead.
Israel Faced an Uncertain Journey
The children of Israel understood uncertainty.
After their deliverance from Egypt, they entered a completely different season.
At Mount Sinai, the Lord gave them His commandments. He established their identity as a people who belonged to Him. He also gave them direction concerning how they should live.
However, they still had a journey ahead.
The Promised Land was before them, but the wilderness stood between where they were and where they were going.
Consequently, they had many reasons to worry.
Where would they find food?
Where would they find water?
Would enemies attack them?
Where would they sleep?
How would they survive?
Most importantly, they had to learn that their future did not depend on knowing every detail.
Their future depended on trusting the One who was leading them.
The Lord Jesus Christ Makes a Way for Us to Rest
One of the beautiful promises given to Moses appears in Exodus 33:14:
“And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.” — Exodus 33:14, KJV
What a powerful promise.
The Lord did not simply promise Israel an easy journey.
Instead, He promised His presence.
That distinction matters.
Sometimes we ask the Lord Jesus Christ to remove every difficult circumstance. However, the answer may not always be immediate deliverance from the situation.
Sometimes the answer is His presence in the situation.
“My presence shall go with thee.”
Then comes the promise:
“I will give thee rest.”
Therefore, Christian rest does not always mean that everything around us becomes quiet.
Sometimes Christian rest means that our hearts become quiet because we know who is with us.
You Do Not Need to Know Everything
One of the biggest problems we face during a new season is our desire for complete certainty.
We want to know the beginning.
We want to know the middle.
We want to know the ending.
We want to know every obstacle before we take the first step.
However, the Lord Jesus Christ often calls us to walk by faith.
Proverbs 3:5–6 says:
“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.” — KJV
Notice the promise.
He will direct your paths.
The passage does not say that you will understand everything first.
Instead, it calls you to trust.
That means you can take the next step even when you cannot see the entire road.
The Wilderness Was Not the End
The wilderness was a difficult place for Israel.
Nevertheless, the wilderness was not their final destination.
That truth can encourage us today.
Maybe you are going through a wilderness season right now.
Perhaps your finances have changed.
Perhaps your career has changed.
Perhaps your family situation has changed.
Perhaps you are starting over after disappointment.
Maybe you simply feel tired from carrying responsibilities for too long.
Whatever your situation may be, remember this:
A wilderness is a place you pass through. It does not have to become your permanent home.
The Lord Jesus Christ can lead you through unfamiliar territory.
He Provides What You Need
Israel also learned another important lesson in the wilderness.
The Lord provided manna.
Exodus 16:4 says:
“Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you.” — KJV
Every morning, Israel received what they needed.
They could not store up endless supplies for themselves.
Instead, they had to trust the Lord’s provision.
Likewise, we sometimes worry about tomorrow because we are trying to solve tomorrow’s problems today.
However, the Lord Jesus Christ teaches us to trust Him one day at a time.
Jesus said:
“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself.” — Matthew 6:34, KJV
This does not mean that we should be careless or irresponsible.
Instead, it reminds us not to allow tomorrow’s unknown problems to steal today’s peace.
Rest Does Not Mean Doing Nothing
Biblical rest does not mean laziness.
Instead, biblical rest means trusting the Lord Jesus Christ while faithfully doing what He has placed before us.
You can work and still rest.
You can plan and still rest.
You can prepare and still rest.
You can face difficult responsibilities and still rest.
Why?
Because your confidence does not ultimately come from your ability to control everything.
Your confidence comes from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, do what you can today.
Pray.
Plan.
Work.
Serve.
Love.
Obey.
Then leave what you cannot control in His hands.
What Are You Carrying?
Imagine carrying a heavy backpack all day.
At first, you might think you can handle it.
After an hour, your shoulders hurt.
After several hours, your back aches.
Eventually, you realize that you have been carrying something you were never meant to carry alone.
Worry can work the same way.
One concern becomes another.
One question produces another question.
One fear creates another fear.
Soon, your mind becomes exhausted.
Jesus gives us an invitation:
“Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.” — Matthew 11:28, KJV
That invitation still speaks to weary hearts.
If you are tired, come.
If you are burdened, come.
If you are confused, come.
If you are afraid of the future, come.
The answer begins with coming to the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Problem: We Try to Control the Unknown
The problem is not always the new season itself.
Sometimes the bigger problem is our attempt to control everything inside that season.
We want guarantees.
We want complete information.
We want to know that nothing will go wrong.
Yet, life does not give us that kind of certainty.
Therefore, we need a better foundation.
Instead of saying, “I know exactly what will happen,” faith says:
“I do not know everything that will happen, but I know who will be with me.”
That change in perspective can bring peace.
The Solution: Trust the Presence of the Lord Jesus Christ
When uncertainty rises, return to the promise.
His presence goes with you.
When you do not know what you need, remember that He provides.
When you feel exhausted, remember that He offers rest.
When you cannot see the road, remember that He can direct your path.
When you fear the future, remember that the future is not outside His knowledge.
Psalm 23:1–2 says:
“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.” — KJV
A shepherd leads.
A shepherd provides.
A shepherd protects.
A shepherd knows where the sheep need to go.
Therefore, you do not have to know everything about the journey.
You need to stay close to the Shepherd.
A Simple Example From Everyday Life
Suppose you are driving somewhere you have never been.
You do not know every street.
You do not know every turn.
You do not know where every traffic light will appear.
Yet, if you have reliable directions, you do not need to know the entire road before starting.
You simply follow the next instruction.
Likewise, faith often works one step at a time.
The Lord Jesus Christ may not show you the entire future today.
However, He can show you what you need to do today.
Take today’s step.
Then trust Him with tomorrow’s step.
Your Rest Is Found in His Presence
The greatest promise is not that we will never experience trouble.
The promise is that we will never have to face life without the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 13:5 reminds us:
“I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” — KJV
That promise changes how we approach a new season.
You may enter a new job.
He can be with you.
You may begin a new relationship.
He can guide you.
You may start a new ministry.
He can strengthen you.
You may face an unexpected challenge.
He can sustain you.
You may walk through a season you never expected.
He can still make a way for you to rest.
Remember What He Has Already Done
When Israel became afraid, remembering the past could strengthen their faith.
They had already seen the Lord deliver them from Egypt.
They had already seen His power.
They had already experienced His provision.
Likewise, remember your own testimony.
Think about the doors that opened.
Remember the times you received strength when you felt weak.
Remember the prayers that were answered.
Remember the moments when you thought you could not continue but somehow found strength to take another step.
Those memories can remind you that the Lord Jesus Christ has been faithful.
Therefore, when a new season begins, do not only look at what you cannot see.
Look back at what He has already done.

A Prayer for Rest in a New Season
Lord Jesus Christ,
I do not know everything that is ahead of me.
However, I know that You are with me.
When I feel uncertain, give me faith.
When I feel afraid, give me courage.
When I feel tired, give me rest.
When I do not know what to do, direct my steps.
Help me trust Your presence instead of fearing the unknown.
Help me remember Your faithfulness.
Help me receive what You provide each day.
I surrender the things I cannot control.
Lead me into the future You have prepared for me.
In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, Amen.
