The Power of Stillness: How to Find Peace in the Presence of the Lord Jesus Christ

Sometimes, the greatest thing you can do for your spiritual life is to stop doing so much.

We live in a world that celebrates being busy. We rush to work, care for our families, answer messages, pay bills, and chase our goals. Even when we set aside time for prayer, our minds may still race through tomorrow’s responsibilities. As a result, we can become physically exhausted, emotionally drained, and spiritually distracted.

But what if the peace you need does not begin with doing more? What if it begins with being still?

As a Christian writer who shares biblical encouragement through PossibilityPlus Living, I want to remind you of a powerful truth from Psalm 46:10: you do not have to wait for life to become quiet before you draw near to the Lord Jesus Christ. You can turn to Him right in the middle of your busy life.

In this article, we will explore the biblical meaning of stillness, discover how to quiet a restless heart, and learn practical ways to make room for prayer, worship, and trust. Most importantly, you will discover how to stop allowing the noise around you to drown out the truth within you.

Bible focus: Psalm 46:10 (KJV) · Christian Inspiration · Spiritual Growth · Finding Peace in Jesus Christ

A peaceful moment of stillness beside a lake at sunrise.

1. What Does It Mean to Be Still Before the Lord Jesus Christ?

First, let us look at the words found in Psalm 46:10. The Bible says in the King James Version:

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”

— Psalm 46:10, KJV

This verse reminds us that the Lord Jesus Christ deserves our attention, our trust, and our worship. Although our lives may feel uncertain, He remains worthy of our confidence.

However, biblical stillness means more than sitting quietly in a room. It means pausing long enough to recognize the Lord’s authority and remember that we do not control everything.

Stillness is an act of faith. It is a choice to stop allowing fear, worry, and endless activity to rule our thoughts. Instead, we turn our attention toward the Lord Jesus Christ and acknowledge His power over our lives.

For example, imagine a woman named Sarah who wakes up every morning already worried. She thinks about her bills, her children, her work, and the problems she has not yet solved. Before she even gets out of bed, her mind is racing.

One morning, Sarah decides to do something different. Instead of immediately reaching for her phone, she sits quietly for five minutes. She reads a passage of Scripture, prays, and reminds herself that the Lord Jesus Christ is greater than the problems she faces.

Her responsibilities have not disappeared. Nevertheless, her attitude begins to change. She can now face her day with greater peace, clearer priorities, and renewed faith.

That is one way the power of stillness works. It does not always change our circumstances immediately, but it can change how we approach them.

Why Is Stillness Important for Christian Living?

In our busy world, we often confuse activity with spiritual growth. We may attend church, listen to sermons, read Christian articles, and complete our daily tasks while giving little attention to personal time with the Lord.

Yet spiritual growth requires more than gathering information. We must also allow the truth of the Word to shape our hearts and actions.

Consider these three benefits of Christian stillness:

  • It strengthens our awareness of the Lord. We become more intentional about prayer, worship, and reading Scripture.

  • It helps us recognize our worries. When we slow down, we can identify the fears and distractions competing for our attention.

  • It encourages us to trust rather than control everything. We learn to do what we can while leaving the outcome in the hands of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Therefore, do not measure your spiritual life only by how much you accomplish. Also consider how deeply you trust the One you serve.

2. The Problem With Always Being Busy

Today, many people live as though stopping for a moment means falling behind. We fill our calendars, check our phones constantly, and move from one responsibility to another.

Unfortunately, this constant activity can affect our spiritual lives.

When Noise Becomes a Distraction

First, constant noise can make it difficult to examine our hearts. We may stay so busy that we never ask whether our choices reflect our faith.

For instance, you might spend an hour scrolling through social media but struggle to spend five quiet minutes in prayer. You may know what everyone else is doing, yet fail to consider what the Lord’s Word is teaching you.

The problem is not that every activity is wrong. Work, family responsibilities, friendships, and recreation all have their place. Rather, the problem begins when these things crowd out the time and attention we should give to the Lord.

Jesus taught the importance of hearing His words in the account of Mary and Martha.

Luke 10:38–42 describes Martha as occupied with serving while Mary sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to His word. Martha’s service was not inherently bad. However, Jesus pointed out that Mary had chosen what was needful.

This account teaches us an important lesson: we can become so busy doing good things that we neglect what matters most.

Consequently, we must learn to balance responsibility with devotion.

When Worry Takes Over Our Thoughts

Second, a restless mind often tries to solve tomorrow’s problems today.

Perhaps you are worried about your finances. Maybe a family relationship is strained, your health concerns you, or an important decision lies ahead. Your mind keeps replaying the same questions because you want certainty.

However, constant worrying does not guarantee a better outcome. Instead, it can leave you exhausted before you have even faced the day.

Philippians 4:6–7 teaches believers to bring their requests before the Lord through prayer and supplication with thanksgiving. The passage then describes the peace of the Lord, which surpasses human understanding and guards our hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Notice the practical lesson. Scripture does not tell us to pretend that our problems do not exist. Instead, it teaches us to bring those concerns to the Lord.

Therefore, when worry begins to overwhelm you, pause and pray. Name the concern honestly. Ask for wisdom. Take any responsible action you can, and resist the urge to carry tomorrow’s burdens before tomorrow arrives.

In this way, stillness becomes a practical expression of faith.

3. Stillness Helps Us Recognize Who Is in Control

Sometimes, our deepest struggle is not the problem itself. It is our desire to control every detail of the outcome.

We want to know how everything will work out, when the answer will come, and whether our plans will succeed. Yet life does not always provide immediate answers.

That is why Psalm 46 is such a powerful reminder. Its message calls us to recognize the Lord’s authority even when the world around us feels unstable.

You Do Not Have to Have Every Answer

Consider a man who is waiting to hear whether he will receive a new job. He has completed the interview, submitted his references, and done everything the employer requested.

Nevertheless, he keeps checking his email every few minutes. He imagines every possible disappointment and struggles to concentrate on anything else.

Although he cannot control the employer’s decision, he can control how he responds while waiting.

He can pray for wisdom, continue fulfilling his responsibilities, prepare for other opportunities, and trust the Lord Jesus Christ with the outcome.

Likewise, you may be waiting for an answer that has not yet arrived. You may be praying for a family member, seeking direction, or facing a season of uncertainty.

Still, you can choose to trust the Lord today.

Proverbs 3:5–6 encourages us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and acknowledge Him in all our ways. It reminds us not to depend solely on our own understanding.

Therefore, faith does not require you to know everything. It calls you to trust the One who does.

Stillness Is Not the Same as Doing Nothing

It is important to understand this distinction. Biblical stillness does not mean neglecting your responsibilities or refusing to address a problem.

Instead, it means acting from a place of trust rather than panic.

For example:

  • If you face financial trouble, pray for wisdom and make a realistic budget.

  • If you have hurt someone, seek forgiveness and take steps to repair the relationship.

  • If you face a difficult decision, examine the Scriptures, seek wise counsel, and consider the facts.

  • If you feel overwhelmed, identify what must be done now and what can wait.

In each case, you still take action. However, you no longer allow fear to become your master.

Ultimately, stillness helps you act with faith instead of reacting from fear.

4. How to Be Still When Your Mind Will Not Slow Down

Perhaps you understand the importance of stillness, but you find it difficult to practice. The moment you sit down, your mind starts listing unfinished tasks. You remember a conversation from yesterday or begin worrying about something that might happen next week.

If that sounds familiar, do not become discouraged. Learning to slow down takes practice.

Here are five practical ways to develop a more consistent quiet time with the Lord Jesus Christ.

Step 1: Choose a Quiet Moment

First, identify a time when you can pause without unnecessary interruptions. For some people, early morning works best. Others find quiet moments during lunch or before bed.

You do not need a perfect setting. A chair in your bedroom, a quiet corner of your home, or a peaceful outdoor space can become a place for prayer.

Start with five minutes if that is all you can manage. Then build the habit gradually.

Remember, the goal is not to impress anyone with the length of your devotion. The goal is to give the Lord your sincere attention.

Step 2: Put Away Your Distractions

Next, silence your phone notifications and set aside anything that can wait.

You may discover that your attention has become so divided that even a short period without notifications feels uncomfortable. That is all the more reason to practice.

For those few minutes, allow yourself to stop responding to every demand for your attention.

Instead, focus on the Word of the Lord, prayer, and honest reflection. Over time, you may find it easier to recognize when distractions are pulling you away from what matters most.

Step 3: Read One Scripture Slowly

Rather than rushing through several chapters, choose one verse or a short passage and consider its meaning.

For example, read Psalm 46:10 slowly. Ask yourself:

  • What does this verse teach me about the authority of the Lord Jesus Christ?

  • What am I struggling to trust Him with today?

  • What distraction is taking too much of my attention?

  • What practical step can I take in response to this Scripture?

Then give yourself time to reflect.

You do not have to manufacture a special feeling. Simply allow the truth of the Word to direct your thoughts and choices.

Step 4: Pray Honestly

Prayer does not require impressive words. You can speak openly about your fears, disappointments, gratitude, and hopes.

For example, you might pray:

“Lord Jesus, my mind feels restless today. I have many responsibilities, and I am worried about things I cannot control. Please help me focus on Your Word, trust Your wisdom, and fulfill my responsibilities with faith. Teach me to seek You above the distractions around me. Let my thoughts and actions honor You today. Amen.”

After praying, take a few quiet moments to reflect on the Scriptures you have read.

Remember, stillness is not a technique for forcing an answer from the Lord. It is an opportunity to turn your heart toward Him and submit your life to His truth.

Step 5: Carry That Peace Into Your Day

Finally, do not treat your quiet time as something that ends the moment you stand up.

Instead, carry its lessons into your daily activities.

When someone frustrates you, pause before responding. When worry rises, pray before allowing fear to dictate your decisions. When you face a difficult choice, remember the biblical principles you have considered.

You may still experience stress. You may still face unexpected challenges. Nevertheless, you can practice returning your attention to the Lord Jesus Christ throughout the day.

In this way, stillness becomes more than a morning routine. It becomes a way of approaching life with faith.

5. Make the Lord Jesus Christ the Center of Your Life

There is an important difference between acknowledging the Lord with our words and honoring Him with our lives.

We may say that the Lord comes first. However, our daily choices reveal what receives our greatest attention.

For example, consider how you spend your time, what influences your decisions, and what occupies your thoughts when you have nothing urgent to do.

Do your habits help you grow in faith? Do your relationships encourage you to live according to the Scriptures? Are your goals consistent with the teachings of Jesus Christ?

These questions are not meant to condemn you. Rather, they help you examine your priorities honestly.

From Empty Busyness to Meaningful Living

Imagine two people who have equally demanding schedules.

The first person rushes through each day, responds to every distraction, and measures success only by completed tasks. Even after accomplishing a great deal, that person feels empty and restless.

The second person also works hard and cares for family members. However, this person makes room for prayer, studies the Scriptures, and regularly evaluates personal priorities. When difficulties arise, the person seeks to respond with patience, wisdom, and faith.

Both people have responsibilities. Yet their approach to those responsibilities differs.

The second person is not guaranteed a trouble-free life. Nevertheless, a deliberate relationship with the Lord can help shape a more faithful response to life’s challenges.

That is why Christian spiritual growth involves more than attending services or completing religious activities. It includes learning to love the Lord, obey His Word, and reflect His character in everyday life.

Do Not Wait Until Life Is Perfect

Perhaps you believe you will have more time for the Lord when your schedule becomes less demanding.

You may be waiting for your children to grow older, your finances to improve, or your workload to decrease.

However, there will always be another responsibility waiting for your attention.

Therefore, do not postpone your relationship with the Lord until circumstances become ideal. Begin where you are.

You can pray during a difficult season. You can read Scripture when you feel uncertain. You can worship even when you have unanswered questions.

Most importantly, you can make the Lord Jesus Christ the center of your life today.

6. The Day Will Come When the Lord Is Exalted Before All

Psalm 46:10 does not end with an invitation to be still. It also declares that the Lord will be exalted among the nations and throughout the earth.

This statement reminds us that His authority does not depend on whether people recognize it today.

Some people ignore His Word. Others reject His authority or place their confidence in worldly power, personal success, or material possessions.

Nevertheless, the truth of the Lord does not change according to public opinion.

Philippians 2:10–11 teaches that every knee will bow at the name of Jesus and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of the Father.

Therefore, the question is not whether the Lord deserves our worship. The question is whether we will honor Him willingly in our lives today.

Choose to Worship Him Now

You do not have to wait for a future day to acknowledge the Lord Jesus Christ as King.

You can worship Him now. You can obey His Word now. You can surrender your plans, examine your heart, and seek His direction now.

Likewise, you do not have to wait until every problem disappears before you trust Him.

Even in uncertainty, you can choose faith. Even in disappointment, you can choose prayer. Even in a busy season, you can choose to make room for the One who deserves your highest devotion.

That choice begins with a willing heart.

So, before you return to your schedule, pause for a moment. Put aside the pressure to accomplish something. Reflect on the truth of the Scriptures, and consider what it means to let the Lord Jesus Christ direct your life.

The world may continue to rush around you. Your responsibilities may remain unchanged. Yet you can still choose to honor the Lord above every distraction.

Be still, and know that He is worthy of your trust, your worship, and your whole life.
