A Willing Heart: Trusting God’s Strength in Your Weakness
Facing the Fear That Holds You Back
You’re hiding in fear. You’ve been told to step up, maybe lead, serve, and share. But deep down, you feel weak, unsure, maybe even unqualified. And so you pause. Yet here’s the truth: God doesn’t call you because you feel strong. He calls you because you have a willing heart. I’ve seen this in scripture and in real life. I want to invite you to join me on a journey that shows how your weakness can become a stage for God’s power.
The Problem: Feeling Unready and Overlooked
Too often, we hear a call from God, but we stop ourselves. Because:
-
We believe we must feel ready.
-
We think our past disqualifies us.
-
We compare ourselves with others who seem stronger.
And therefore we say “not me.” Yet the problem isn’t lack of strength, it’s lack of willingness.
The Story of Andrew Palau: A Willing Heart in Action
Then there is Andrew Palau, son of the evangelist Luis Palau. For years he resisted God’s call. He knew how to talk about Jesus superficially, but public speaking brought him dread. He thought he was the wrong person. Even so, one scripture landed in his life: when the angel said to Gideon, “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior” (Judges 6:12). Gideon didn’t feel mighty but God declared what He could do through him. And Andrew realised: God isn’t dependent on my ability, only on His presence. So Andrew surrendered his fear. He offered his willing heart. And God began to use him to speak to thousands.
The Scripture Anchor: Gideon and “Mighty Warrior”
In the story of Gideon, found in Judges chapter 6, we see a man hiding from his enemies, afraid and self-doubting. Yet the angel of the Lord greeted him: “The Lord is with you, mighty warrior.” (Judges 6:12 NIV) God wasn’t commenting on Gideon’s past strength. He was announcing what He could do through Gideon’s obedience. This tells us: when God calls you, He is speaking about what He can do through you, if you have that willing heart.
Why This Matters for You
Because you may feel like Gideon:
-
Hiding in your life’s corners.
-
Doubting your ability.
-
Hearing a call but lacking courage.
Here’s what you need to know: God doesn’t wait for your perfect resume. He welcomes your willing heart. He offers to go with you. He asks you to trust His presence and His power.
What It Looks Like to Say “Yes” with a Willing Heart
Here are practical steps:
-
Own your fear, but don’t hide. Acknowledge your weakness.
-
Recognise God’s presence. Ask: “Lord, are You with me?”
-
Offer yourself. Say: “Here am I—willing.”
-
Step into action, even if small. Trust Him for the outcome.
-
Reflect afterwards: what did God do through my yielding?
Example in Everyday Life
Imagine you feel called to lead a small group, but you don’t feel confident. You might think: “I’m not a great speaker.” Yet you say: “Lord, I’m willing.” Then you gather with one friend. You share your story. You pray together. Over the weeks you see hearts changed or your own faith deepen. This shows: you didn’t have to be perfect. You just needed to be available.

The Big Takeaway
Your weakness isn’t your disqualifier. Your willing heart is your door-opener. God calls the unlikely. He uses those who trust that He is powerful in them. So you don’t have to feel ready. You just need to be willing. And you don’t walk alone, He goes with you.
Final Encouragement
So, what about you? Where is God inviting you to trust His presence and power in the middle of your inability? What step might He be asking you to take, not because you feel ready, but because you have a willing heart? And because He promises to go with you? Say “Yes.” Offer your heart. Then watch Him make you mighty, not in your own strength, but in His.
