The Dinosaur Dilemma: Faith vs. Science?
Growing up in church, I never heard anyone talk about dinosaurs. It wasn’t that the topic was off-limits, but it simply never came up. Yet, in school, dinosaurs were everywhere—in books, movies, and museum exhibits. Teachers taught about their existence as fact, but no one ever questioned whether Christians should believe in them.
Even now, writing this article, I had to step back and ask: Why do some Christians struggle with the idea of dinosaurs? Does the Bible mention them? And if it doesn’t, does that mean they never existed? These are not just academic questions—they touch on the foundations of faith and biblical truth.
Let’s dive into this discussion and explore how Christians can approach dinosaurs while staying true to Scripture.
Why Do Some Christians Question the Existence of Dinosaurs?
Some Christians doubt dinosaurs for two main reasons. First, the Bible only mentions two creatures—Behemoth and Leviathan—that resemble dinosaurs, and their descriptions are debated. Second, the timeline of dinosaurs contradicts the traditional six-day creation belief.
Behemoth and Leviathan: Dinosaurs in the Bible?
The Book of Job describes Behemoth:
“Look at Behemoth, which I made along with you and which feeds on grass like an ox. What strength it has in its loins, what power in the muscles of its belly! Its tail sways like a cedar…” (Job 40:15-18, NIV).
Some believe Behemoth could be a hippopotamus or an elephant, but others argue that no known animal today matches this description exactly.
Then there’s Leviathan:
“You crushed the heads of Leviathan and gave it as food to the creatures of the desert.” (Psalm 74:14, NIV).
Leviathan is described as a massive sea creature. Could these be references to dinosaurs or something else entirely?
Young Earth vs. Old Earth Debate
The age of the earth is another key issue. Many Christians who hold to a literal six-day creation believe the earth is around 6,000 years old, aligning with groups like Answers in Genesis. Scientists, however, date dinosaur fossils to millions of years ago using radiometric dating.
This presents a challenge. If the earth is young, how do we explain dinosaurs? If the earth is old, how do we reconcile that with Genesis?
Can Christians Believe in Dinosaurs and Still Trust the Bible?
Absolutely. The Bible’s purpose is not to provide a scientific textbook on the age of the earth. It is to reveal God’s plan for redemption.
Think about all the mysteries of creation we still don’t fully understand—space, the ocean, even the human body. If God created the universe, doesn’t it make sense that dinosaurs could be part of His design?
Jesus Himself emphasized faith over knowledge. We don’t have to understand everything about the natural world to trust in God’s sovereignty.
Is Belief in Dinosaurs Essential for Christians?
The Bible does not command us to believe in dinosaurs. It does, however, call us to believe in Jesus Christ.
Instead of arguing over dinosaurs, Christians can focus on what truly matters: faith in God’s power and love. Whether dinosaurs roamed the earth thousands or millions of years ago, they do not change the Gospel’s core message.
What Role Does Science Play in Understanding Dinosaurs?
Science offers insights into God’s creation. Archaeologists and geologists study fossils to uncover Earth’s past. Christian scientists approach these discoveries differently—some accept mainstream dating methods, while others believe in a young earth.
Dr. Richard Carlson, a professor at Fuller Theological Seminary, says:
“We must not set up our children for confusion and disillusionment when they hear the scientific story from high school teachers and college professors. Dinosaurs are a wonderful part of God’s marvelous creation.”
Science and faith do not have to be enemies. Instead, they can work together to reveal the majesty of God’s world.
How Do Dinosaurs Fit into a Biblical Creation Timeline?
One possibility is that dinosaurs were created on the sixth day with other animals. Some believe they survived until the flood and were wiped out. Others suggest they lived long before humans and that God’s “days” in Genesis could represent long periods.
Regardless of where one lands, it’s essential to remember that Genesis is about God’s power, not a scientific timeline. The Bible does not provide every detail about creation, and that’s okay.
How Can Dinosaurs Enhance Our Understanding of God’s Creation?
Instead of dinosaurs being a stumbling block to faith, they can enhance our awe of God’s power. Their fossils remind us of the vastness of creation and the mysteries still left to explore.
When we look at the stars, the ocean, or even the tiniest insect, we see God’s creativity. Dinosaurs are just another incredible piece of His grand design.

Conclusion: Faith is Bigger Than Dinosaurs
Believing in dinosaurs does not mean rejecting the Bible. Instead, it can deepen our wonder about God’s creation. Whether dinosaurs lived thousands or millions of years ago, one thing remains unchanged—God is the Creator of all things.
Rather than debating the details, let’s focus on the greater truth: God’s love, power, and the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.
