The Common Misunderstanding

Many people say, “I’ve always been a Christian.” They grew up in church, attended Sunday school, and may have even prayed before meals. Later in life, they drifted away but now feel the pull to return. But does attending church as a child make someone a Christian? Does believing in God automatically mean you follow Christ?

Our culture often throws around the word “Christian” loosely. We hear phrases like “Christian nation,” “Christian values,” and “Christian music.” But what does it actually mean to be a Christian?

The Origin of the Word “Christian”

The term “Christian” first appeared in Antioch, as recorded in Acts 11:26. It was used to describe the disciples of Jesus. The word means “belonging to Messiah” or “follower of Messiah.” Initially, outsiders likely used it to set apart Jesus’ followers from Jews, possibly even as an insult.

Interestingly, the word “Christian” appears only three times in the New Testament. In Acts 26:28, King Agrippa tells Paul, “Almost thou persuadest me to be a Christian.” And in 1 Peter 4:16, believers are encouraged not to be ashamed of suffering “as a Christian.”

Early followers of Christ adopted the term and wore it with honor, despite facing persecution. Over time, however, the word “Christian” took on different meanings.

The Shift in Meaning

Originally, being a Christian meant dedicating one’s life to Jesus. It was not about tradition, politics, or cultural identity. Unfortunately, as Christianity spread, some people began seeing it as a default identity rather than a personal commitment.

Today, many claim Christianity without actually following Christ. This misunderstanding leads to confusion. Some believe being a Christian is about morality or belonging to a religious group. But the Bible paints a different picture.

What It Really Means to Be a Christian

1. Knowing Jesus Personally

Christianity is not about being born into a Christian family or attending church. It is about a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Many people know about Jesus. They believe He exists. They even know Bible verses. But knowing facts about Jesus is not the same as knowing Him personally. Even demons recognize who He is (James 2:19).

To be a Christian, you must experience a heart transformation. That means surrendering your life to Jesus and making Him Lord over all.

2. Repenting of Sin

The Bible teaches that true Christians turn away from sin. 2 Corinthians 5:17 says, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

This does not mean Christians never sin. But a true believer feels conviction and desires to live differently. A Christian battles sin and seeks holiness, rather than embracing a lifestyle that goes against God’s commands.

3. Loving and Obeying Jesus

Imagine a NASCAR race. The cars follow a pace car. If a car suddenly veers off in the opposite direction, no one would call it a “pacecar-tian.” Yet many believe they can call themselves Christians while ignoring Jesus’ teachings.

Jesus said in John 14:15, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” True Christians obey Christ. They love God and others, forgive enemies, and strive to follow Jesus daily.

4. Believing the Gospel

Christianity is not just about good behavior. It is about faith in Jesus’ finished work on the cross. 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 summarizes the gospel:

“Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, was buried, and rose again on the third day.”

To be a Christian means fully trusting in Jesus for salvation. It is not about being “good enough” to earn heaven. It is about grace.

Are You Truly a Christian?

Jesus warned in Matthew 7:21-23 that some people will think they are Christians but never truly knew Him. He will say, “I never knew you; depart from me.”

So, ask yourself:

Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus?
Do you feel conviction over sin?
Do you strive to obey Christ?
Do you trust in Jesus alone for salvation?

If not, now is the time to seek Him. Cry out to Jesus. Ask Him to be the Lord of your life.
