Are You Spiritually Mature or Still Drinking Milk?

The Problem: Stuck in Spiritual Infancy

Have you ever wondered why your faith feels stagnant? Maybe you’ve been a Christian for years, yet you struggle with the same doubts, the same sins, and the same frustrations. You’re not alone. Many believers find themselves in this cycle.

Paul addressed this very issue in 1 Corinthians 3. He spoke to Christians who had accepted Jesus but were still spiritually immature. They were like babies drinking milk, unable to handle the solid food of deeper spiritual truths. Their lives were filled with jealousy, division, and worldly thinking.

So, how do we grow beyond spiritual infancy? Let’s explore what Paul teaches and how we can move from milk to meat in our faith.

Spiritual Growth: More Than Just Church Attendance

Paul tells the Corinthians, “I have fed you with milk, and not with meat” (1 Corinthians 3:2). He saw that they were not ready for deeper teachings because they were still acting like the world.

Many Christians today face the same problem. They go to church, read their Bible occasionally, and pray when things get tough. But their daily lives show no real transformation. Haven’t you noticed most Christians do not attend or have bible study or classes?  There is no more profound understanding of God’s word. The only time they open the bible is when they attend church. that is why God says my people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. They are still controlled by emotions, pride, and division.

True spiritual growth requires more. It’s not just about knowing scripture, it’s about living it. Are you applying what you learn in the Bible to your life?

What’s Holding You Back? Identifying Spiritual Immaturity

Paul gives clear signs of spiritual immaturity:
Jealousy and Strife – Are you constantly comparing yourself to others? Do you struggle with bitterness or resentment?
Division in the Church – Do you follow a person more than Jesus? Are you more loyal to a pastor, denomination, or political ideology than to Christ?
Worldly Thinking – Do you make decisions based on culture rather than God’s Word?

If any of these describe you, it’s time to grow. But how?

The Solution: Moving from Milk to Meat

  1. Feed on the Right Spiritual Food
Just as babies need nourishment to grow, Christians need the right spiritual diet. Start reading the Bible deeply, not just skimming. Meditate on it and apply it to your life.

  2. Recognize Who Truly Brings Growth
Paul reminds us, “I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase” (1 Corinthians 3:6). No human leader, book, or program will make you grow—only God does. Seek Him in prayer and depend on the Holy Spirit.

  3. Build on the Right Foundation
Paul warns that some people build their faith on weak foundations—wood, hay, and stubble—while others build on gold and precious stones (1 Corinthians 3:12-13). Test your beliefs. Are they based on biblical truth or popular opinion?

  4. Your Faith Will Be Tested
“Every man’s work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man’s work of what sort it is” (1 Corinthians 3:13).

It’s easy to say we trust God when life is good. But what happens when trials come? Financial struggles, sickness, betrayal—these are the fires that test our faith. Do we still trust God when things don’t go our way?

Think of Job. He lost everything, yet he remained faithful. His faith wasn’t just words; it was real. God allows tests to prove whether we truly believe what we say. When hard times come, will your faith stand or crumble?

  5. Live as God’s Temple
“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God?” (1 Corinthians 3:16). If the Holy Spirit lives in you, your life should reflect that. Remove what is unholy, and invite God to transform your heart.
