Trusting God in the Unknown
Have you ever felt stuck, unsure of what God is asking you to do next? Maybe you’re facing a career change, a move, or a big life decision, and you desperately want a clear roadmap. But instead, all you hear is silence. The uncertainty can be overwhelming. So, how do you obey God when you don’t know the plan?
I understand that feeling all too well. I love making plans, setting goals, and knowing what’s next. But life doesn’t always work that way. And faith—real faith—means trusting even when the path isn’t clear.
Let’s explore two key steps to obeying God when you don’t know the full picture.
1. Trust in What You Do Have
When God calls us to follow Him, He rarely gives us the full plan upfront. Instead, He asks us to trust Him with what we do know.
Take Mary, the mother of Jesus, as an example. In Luke 1:26-29, the angel Gabriel appeared to her with shocking news. She would give birth to the Son of God. Naturally, she was “greatly troubled.” She had no idea how this would unfold, but she trusted God anyway.
What Did Mary Have?
- God’s Favor: The angel told her, “You who are highly favored! The Lord is with you” (Luke 1:28, NIV). She didn’t have all the answers, but she had God’s presence.
- God’s Promises: She knew the stories of her ancestors—how God had been faithful to David, Jacob, and others before her.
Like Mary, we often focus on what we don’t know. But what if we shifted our focus? Instead of dwelling on uncertainty, we can cling to what we do know:
- God is faithful (Deuteronomy 7:9).
- God has a plan (Jeremiah 29:11).
- God is with us (Isaiah 41:10).
Instead of demanding all the details, we can confidently take the next step, knowing that God sees the full picture even when we don’t.
2. Choose to Obey Despite Fear
Obedience isn’t always easy. It’s often scary. But choosing to obey—even when we’re afraid—builds our faith and strengthens our relationship with God.
Mary could have said no. She could have let fear stop her. Instead, she responded, “I am the Lord’s servant… May your word to me be fulfilled” (Luke 1:38, NIV).
Biblical Examples of Obedience Without Knowing the Plan
- Abraham left his homeland without knowing where God was leading him (Hebrews 11:8).
- Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, trusting God’s direction step by step (Exodus 3:10-12).
- David was anointed as king long before he took the throne, enduring years of uncertainty (1 Samuel 16:13).
How Can We Obey When We’re Scared?
- Acknowledge Your Fear: It’s okay to be scared. Bring your fears to God in prayer (Psalm 56:3).
- Take Small Steps: You don’t have to see the whole staircase to take the first step.
- Lean on Scripture: The Bible is full of encouragement for moments of uncertainty (Psalm 119:105).
- Surround Yourself with Support: Seek wise counsel and a Christian community to help you stay on course (Proverbs 11:14).
If you wait until you’re completely unafraid to follow God’s calling, you’ll never move forward. Obeying God doesn’t mean you won’t feel fear—it means you trust Him more than that fear.
A Call to Surrender
Before I quit my teaching job, I wrestled with uncertainty. I knew God was calling me into something new, but I had no idea how it would work out. Like Mary, I felt honored but also terrified.
At the end of the day, I had to make a choice: trust God or let fear control me. I chose to trust. And while the journey hasn’t always been easy, I’ve seen His faithfulness every step of the way.
If you’re struggling with an uncertain future, know this: God is in control. He doesn’t expect you to have all the answers. He simply asks you to trust Him and take the next step.
