When Faith Feels Hard: Why Courage Matters Now
Have you ever walked into church and felt more judged than loved? Maybe you’ve been hurt by division, gossip, or even politics in your church family. If so, you’re not alone.
I’ve been there. As a Christian writer and small group leader, I’ve seen how church communities can lose sight of what matters. When that happens, people start slipping. Some walk away entirely. Others stay but stop growing. It’s painful to watch.
That’s why today’s message is so important. We’re diving into a powerful verse from 1 Corinthians 16:13, a charge from Paul to a church that was tearing itself apart.
Paul’s Warning to a Divided Church
The Corinthian church was a mess. People argued over who had more spiritual power. Some hoarded food while others starved. Leaders tolerated sin. The body of Christ was fractured.
But Paul didn’t just scold them. He gave them a plan.
“Be on guard. Stand firm in the faith. Be courageous. Be strong.”
—1 Corinthians 16:13 (NLT)
Each phrase hits hard. Each one offers a lifeline to anyone trying to follow Jesus in a messy church or a broken world.
Be on Guard: Watch for the Enemy
First, Paul says, “Be on guard.”
Why? Because Satan doesn’t announce his arrival. He slips in through offense, distraction, and even tradition. One day you’re praying with your church family. The next, you’re whispering about them behind closed doors.
In my own life, I’ve had to check my heart more times than I can count. Am I living for Christ, or just reacting to others?
Being on guard means staying awake spiritually. Don’t assume your faith will grow on autopilot. Keep watch over your mind, your habits, and your community.
Stand Firm in the Faith: Don’t Settle for Culture’s Standards
Next, Paul urges them to “stand firm in the faith.”
That wasn’t easy for Corinth. Their city was known for its wealth, indulgence, and sexual freedom. Christians there were tempted to blend in rather than stand out.
Sound familiar?
Today’s culture often mocks holiness. But standing firm means saying no to compromise, even when it’s unpopular. One bad decision affects more than just you. It weakens the body of Christ.
Here’s a question to reflect on:
Interactive Poll:
What’s the hardest area for you to “stand firm in the faith”?
Entertainment choices
Relationships
Speaking out for truth
Personal purity
Church disagreements
Take a moment to vote above. You’re not alone in the struggle and identifying it is the first step toward strength.
Be Courageous and Strong: Rise Together
Finally, Paul says, “Be courageous. Be strong.”
Notice how those words go together. You can’t be strong without courage, and you can’t be courageous without support.
The early church had to resist not just temptation but persecution. Still, Paul believed they could endure. He knew God’s Spirit gave them power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).
I once knew a young woman named Rachel who spoke out when her church leaders ignored sin. It cost her friends and comfort. But her courage inspired a revival. Sometimes, being strong means risking your reputation for God’s truth.
