Accepting Adversity as a Part of Life

Life often presents us with challenges we didn’t foresee, battles we didn’t choose, and hardships we didn’t anticipate. These moments can leave us feeling overwhelmed, discouraged, and uncertain about how to move forward. During these times of adversity our true strength and determination often surface. We give in or we fight to overcome the challenges. Sometimes if we are not tested, we have no idea of our strengths. 2 Corinthians 4:8-10 KJV states, “We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; always bearing about in the body the dying of the Lord Jesus, that the life also of Jesus might be made manifest in our body.”

In the journey of life, there are no guarantees of smooth sailing. In John 16:33 of the Bible, Jesus tells us we will have trouble in the world. He encourages us to take heart since he has already overcome the world. Occasionally we encounter storms that shake us to our core, causing us to question our abilities, faith, and resolve. It is crucial to remember that our response to these challenges ultimately helps to shape our destiny. Each decision will have an effect and may result in good or bad consequences so we should carefully consider and weigh our options and not just act on the first idea or solution that comes to mind.

Controlling Our Response

When faced with adversity, it is natural to feel afraid, discouraged, or even defeated, but it’s essential to recognize that our emotions do not define us. We don’t have to succumb just because we have certain feelings. Regardless of how dire the circumstances may appear to be, we need to be as objective as possible in choosing what steps to take. We have the power to choose our thoughts, our attitudes, and our responses to life’s curveballs. We can dig deep and look beyond our present circumstances, taking one step at a time.

Instead of dwelling on fear, doubt, or negativity, we must learn to speak life into our situations. Every negative thought, every self-defeating belief, is like a death sentence we impose upon ourselves. By choosing to speak words of encouragement, resilience, and determination, we can rewrite the narrative of our lives. Our story does not have to go in the direction these obstacles seem to be forcing us to go. We may be challenged but we are neither helpless nor powerless. We are stronger than we know, we have more resources available than we are aware of and more creativity and options than are apparent at first glance.

It’s not about denying the reality of our struggles but acknowledging them while refusing to let them define us. Adversity may knock us down, but it’s up to us whether we choose to stay down or rise again. As Proverbs 24:16 says, “The righteous man falls seven times, but he gets back up.” Persistence, determination, and resilience are the keys to overcoming any obstacle that stands in our way.

I once heard the story of a young boy who was pushed to the ground by a bully who was not only older but much bigger. Each time the determined boy got up the bully would push him back to the ground. Eventually, the boy was tired and weakened and was unable to get up, so he told the bully that although he was unable to get up he was standing up inside. The bully won the physical fight but did not defeat the boy mentally. He had not been able to break his spirit. Some challenges that we face may be similar to that.

Benefits of Adversity

Struggling to overcome pain and hardship, it’s easy to lose sight of our inner strength and the potential for growth that lies within us. However, it’s essential to remember that pain is temporary, but the lessons we learn and the strength we gain from overcoming adversity are lasting. According to the Apostle Paul in Romans 5:3-5, they gloried in their sufferings knowing that suffering produces perseverance, character, and hope. Hope in Jesus Christ meant everything to them. Pain and suffering could not diminish it.

Every challenge we face, and every battle we endure, carries with it the opportunity for growth, resilience, and transformation. Instead of seeing obstacles as barriers, we must view them as stepping stones, leading to our ultimate success. We can use 1 Corinthians 10:13 to encourage ourselves when undergoing trials. It states, “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.” We are encouraged to endure and do our best whenever we cannot see any good that could result from the challenging situations, we find ourselves in. A way out has already been provided so we should not panic.

A lady gave the following testimony: “I just became homeless at 49. I am living out of my truck. My job suddenly ended & I have no savings, and no family. My friends all have houses. I am at peace with my situation because I know my Lord has always provided for me whenever I was at the end of my rope. I am excited because I am expecting a miracle. My pastor says, ‘When you think all hope is lost, that’s when you should rejoice, God has a miracle waiting for you; just trust Him.’ So, I am doing what I can – applying for jobs, looking for housing, reading my Bible & casting my care upon the Lord!” This is frightening, but she is trusting God to turn things around for her.

So, what do you do when life’s battles choose you? You face them head-on with courage, determination, and unwavering faith in your ability to overcome by your direction and strength from the Holy Spirit who lives in you. You refuse to be defined by your circumstances and instead embrace the journey knowing that victory awaits you on the other side of your adversity.

Conclusion

Life’s battles may be inevitable, but our response to them is what shows who we are and who directs us. By speaking words of life, embracing resilience, and refusing to give up, we can overcome any obstacle that comes our way. Remember, pain is temporary, but the lessons we learn and the strength we gain are priceless. So, keep fighting, keep believing, and never lose sight of the warrior within you. Most importantly do not lose sight of your faith in God as it is not by your might nor by your strength but by His spirit that you will overcome.
