Rest is a Reality: How to Experience God’s Sabbath Rest Every Day
The Struggle We All Face
Do you ever feel tired even after a full night’s sleep? Many believers live in constant stress, juggling responsibilities while longing for peace. Yet, the more they strive, the heavier life feels. I understand this tension because I’ve been there too. I’ve searched for rest in vacations, hobbies, and even busyness in church work, only to end up drained.
However, the Bible gives us hope. Hebrews 4:9 reminds us: “There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God.” This verse points us to something deeper than a physical break. It reveals a spiritual rest, a rest only God can give.
What Sabbath-Rest Really Means
First, we must clear up a common misunderstanding. Sabbath-rest is not simply about one day a week. Instead, it’s about living in God’s presence daily. It’s a gift, not something we earn by performance or rituals.
Moreover, this rest is not fragile. It does not depend on calm circumstances or problem-free days. It flows from trusting God with our fears, burdens, and future. That is why Jesus said in Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
Why We Struggle to Rest
Even with God’s promise, many still struggle to find peace. Why? Because we try to carry our anxieties on our own. We worry about finances, health, relationships, or ministry outcomes. In doing so, we miss the invitation to surrender those weights to God.
Think about this: when Israel wandered in the wilderness, they could not enter God’s rest because of unbelief. In the same way, unbelief keeps us restless today. Faith opens the door; worry slams it shut.
How to Enter God’s Rest Daily
So, how do we step into this rest? The answer is simple but life-changing. We choose to trust God in the middle of our challenges.
-
Pray intentionally – Start your day by giving your worries to God in prayer.
-
Read Scripture – Remind yourself of promises like Hebrews 4:9 and Revelation 14:13.
-
Pause daily – Take moments of stillness to breathe and acknowledge God’s presence.
-
Release control – Ask: “What am I holding that I need to place in God’s hands today?”
By practicing these steps, we begin to taste the eternal rest promised in heaven (Colossians 2:17).
A Personal Example
I once faced a season of financial pressure. Every bill that came in filled me with dread. I prayed, but then went back to worrying. Finally, I felt God ask me to trust Him completely. I released my fear and chose to believe He would provide. That week, unexpected help arrived, just enough for what I needed. More than the money, I received peace. That peace was my Sabbath-rest.
