How to Find Joy in Pain: Trusting God Through Trials

Life can feel overwhelming when pain strikes. It’s easy to hear, “Everything will be fine,” but hard to believe when the struggle is your own. Let’s face it—when your heart is heavy and your world feels dark, finding joy seems impossible. But what if this pain has a purpose?

God’s Word in James 1:2-3 says, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” These words can feel difficult to embrace. How can we find joy in something that hurts?

In this blog, I’ll walk with you through the questions, struggles, and hope of finding joy even amid trials.

The Pain Feels Unbearable

Pain feels like a tunnel—dark, long, and seemingly endless. You might wonder, “Why would a loving God allow this to happen to me?” I get it. I’ve been there, too.

I remember a time when I felt like my world was crashing down. Each day, the weight on my shoulders felt heavier. Friends offered kind words, but they didn’t lessen the pain. It wasn’t until I turned to God and asked, “What is Your plan in this?” that I began to see glimpses of light in the darkness.

God uses our pain for a greater purpose, though it’s hard to believe in the moment. When we persevere, trusting Him, we begin to see that He’s shaping us into something stronger.

What Joy Looks Like in Trials

You might ask, “Is joy even possible in pain?” Joy doesn’t mean ignoring your struggles or pretending everything is fine. Instead, joy is the deep assurance that God is with you, even when life hurts.

Take the story of Joseph in the Bible. He was sold into slavery, falsely accused, and thrown into prison. Yet, through his trials, God was preparing him for something greater—to save nations and reunite with his family. Joseph didn’t see the purpose immediately, but he trusted God. His perseverance led to blessings far beyond what he could imagine.

How to Trust God in the Darkness

Trusting God when life feels unbearable requires intentional steps. Here are some practical ways to keep going:

  1. Anchor Yourself in Scripture. Verses like James 1:2-3 remind us that trials are temporary and purposeful. Meditate on these truths daily.
  2. Pray Honestly. Pour out your heart to God. Share your pain, fears, and doubts. He can handle it.
  3. Surround Yourself with Support. Lean on trusted friends or a faith community who can encourage you.
  4. Take It One Day at a Time. You don’t have to have it all figured out. Focus on small steps forward.
  5. Remember God’s Sovereignty. If God allows the trial, He will also guide you through it. Trust in His perfect timing.

The Destination is Worth the Journey

No matter how long the tunnel seems, it has an end. God allows trials not to harm us, but to prepare us for the good He has planned. In the in-between—the pain and the waiting—we grow.

One of my favorite reminders is this: If God brings you to it, He will bring you through it. Keep walking. Keep trusting. The joy and purpose God has in store for you will be worth every tear.
