Cast It Off: How to Throw Your Burdens Onto God and Find Strength

Are you overwhelmed by the weight of a burden you were never meant to carry?
Do you feel crushed under pressure, silently asking God for help but not knowing how to let go?
I’ve been there, and if we’re honest, most of us have.

But here’s the truth: you don’t have to carry it alone.
As someone who has faced anxiety, failure, and overwhelming grief, I’ve learned something powerful: God wants our burdens. He invites us to give them to Him.
In this post, we’ll explore what it means to “cast your burden on the Lord” from Psalm 55:22, and we’ll walk through real steps to help you actually do it.

What Does It Mean to Cast Your Burden?

Let’s begin with the word “cast.”
In Hebrew, it means to throw, fling, hurl, or shed to launch something far away from you.
That means God isn’t asking you to politely hand Him your pain.
He’s telling you to throw it out of your life and onto His shoulders.

King David, the writer of Psalm 55, knew this firsthand.
As king, he carried the weight of a nation.
But he also carried guilt, betrayal, loss, and fear.
Still, he wrote:

“Cast your burden on the Lord, and He will sustain you; He will never permit the righteous to be moved.” – Psalm 55:22 ESV

David didn’t hide his pain. He brought it to God again and again.
So the question becomes: Why don’t we?

Why We Struggle to Let Go

Many of us try to carry what only God can hold.
Why?
Because we’ve been taught to be strong, fix things ourselves, or just “pray and move on.”
But real strength comes in surrender.

I remember a time when I was juggling too much work, family, ministry, personal loss.
I kept saying I was “fine.”
But I wasn’t.
It wasn’t until I cried out to God and cast everything at His feet that I found peace.
He didn’t just take my burden; He sustained me in the middle of the storm.

How to Cast Your Burden on the Lord

Now that we know what it means, how do we actually do it?

1. Name Your Burden

First, be honest.
Write it down. Say it aloud in prayer.
Is it shame? Debt? Fear? Loneliness?
God can’t carry what you won’t admit.

2. Fling It in Prayer

Don’t sugarcoat your feelings.
Tell God exactly how you feel.
David did it all the time in the Psalms.
You can say: “God, I’m scared, tired, and angry. Please carry this.”

3. Let It Stay with Him

This one’s hard.
We often cast our burdens, then snatch them back.
Letting go means trusting God with the outcome, even if it’s slow or uncertain.

4. Repeat as Needed

You may have to cast the same burden again and again.
That’s okay.
Each time, you’re building trust.
God isn’t tired of hearing from you. He’s waiting.

When You Cast It Off, God Lifts You Up

After David cast his burdens, God gave him strength.
Not because the problems disappeared, but because God held him together through them.
That’s the promise: “He will sustain you.”
You don’t have to crumble. You don’t have to fake it.
You just have to cast it off.

And when you do, something amazing happens.
Your strength returns.
Your peace grows.
Your joy rises.

A Prayer to Cast It Off

“Lord, I give You this burden that’s weighing me down. I can’t carry it anymore. Help me trust You. Sustain me. Strengthen me. And teach me to let go and let You take over. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”

Final Encouragement

David had a messy life. But he also had a mighty faith.
If he could cast his burdens, so can you.
Don’t wait. Don’t hold it.
Throw it. Sling it. Hurl it out of your hands and into God’s.

You were never meant to carry it alone.
