How to Start Making Decisions That Honor God

Why Do We Keep Making Choices We Regret?

Think back to a decision you made that still makes you cringe.
Maybe it was a relationship.
Maybe it was a habit.
Maybe it was a moment when you knew better, but did it anyway.

If that sounds familiar, you’re not broken beyond repair.
More importantly, you’re not alone.

I’ve spent years studying Scripture, teaching biblical principles, and walking alongside believers who genuinely love God, yet still struggle with everyday decisions. Therefore, today’s goal is simple. We will uncover why we struggle, what God has already provided, and how to start making decisions that honor God, starting now.

Why Doing the Right Thing Feels So Hard

The apostle Paul understood this inner conflict deeply. In fact, he put words to what many of us feel but rarely say out loud:

“I want to do what is good, but I don’t. I don’t want to do what is wrong, but I do it anyway.”
Romans 7:19 (NLT)

Paul wasn’t weak.
Paul wasn’t faithless.
Instead, Paul was honest.

He explained this struggle as a battle between two natures, the old and the new. Because of this battle, making God-honoring decisions often feels exhausting.

Understanding the Old Nature That Sabotages Our Choices

Our old nature seeks comfort, pleasure, and control.
As a result, it focuses on the moment, not the outcome.

Although following our feelings may seem freeing, it often leads to regret, broken trust, and spiritual distance. Therefore, unchecked desires slowly shape decisions that pull us away from God’s best.

Before Jesus, God used the Law given to Moses to restrain this old nature. However, while the Law revealed what was right, it could not change the human heart.

Why the Law Couldn’t Fix the Real Problem

The Law was holy.
The Law was good.
But the Law exposed our brokenness.

Instead of drawing people closer to God, the Law revealed how far human nature had drifted. Consequently, people needed more than rules, they needed renewal.

That’s where Jesus enters the story

How Jesus Changed Everything

Jesus didn’t erase the Law.
Instead, He fulfilled it.

Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus met every requirement God established. As a result, He didn’t just forgive sin, He made a new nature possible.

This new nature is not built on willpower.
It is built on grace.

And it is available because of Jesus, through Jesus, and in Jesus.

What Happens When You Receive Your New Nature in Christ

When you belong to Christ, something radical changes.

1. God Sees Jesus in You

Because of Jesus, God no longer relates to you through condemnation. Instead, He sees Christ’s righteousness covering you. Therefore, you can pursue God without fear of rejection.

2. You Gain Power to Choose Differently

Jesus gives you strength through the Holy Spirit. As a result, you are no longer helpless against old habits. You can now pause, pray, and choose what honors God.

3. You Are No Longer Condemned

Although the struggle remains, the sentence is gone. You are no longer enslaved to sin or destined for eternal separation from God.

How to Start Making Decisions That Honor God Today

Here’s where faith becomes practical.

First, pause before reacting.
Next, ask the Holy Spirit for guidance.
Then, measure your options against Scripture.
Finally, choose obedience, even when it’s uncomfortable.

Small decisions shape big outcomes.
Daily choices form spiritual direction.

A Real-Life Example You Can Relate To

Imagine standing at a crossroads.
One path feels easy and familiar.
The other feels right but uncomfortable.

Choosing the God-honoring path may cost you approval, comfort, or convenience. However, it always leads to peace, growth, and alignment with God’s will.
