When Words Wound or Heal: The Hidden Battle in Your Mouth
When I was growing up, I used to say Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words cannot hurt me. Over time, I learnt that words can do more hurt and damage than sticks and stones. Have you ever walked away from a conversation and thought, “Why did I say that?” Maybe you replayed the moment over and over, wishing you had said something different, something kinder. This is one of the greatest challenges we face as Christians. Many believers wrestle with their words. We love Jesus, but sometimes, our speech doesn’t match our faith.
I understand. As a Christian speaker and blogger grounded in the Oneness belief that Jeshua is the everlasting Father, I’ve seen how words either reflect His nature or betray it. Whether it’s a careless comment, sarcasm, or harsh truth delivered without love, our words represent Christ. And that’s exactly the problem we’re addressing today.
We’ll walk through why your words matter, what the Bible says about speech, and how you can speak in a way that builds up, heals, and represents Jeshua well.
You Are a Representative of Jeshua
First, let’s be clear: you are not just a Christian you are Christ’s ambassador (2 Corinthians 5:20). That means every word you speak is a reflection of His character. Jeshua isn’t physically here right now. But He lives in you. He works through you. When you speak, you speak on His behalf.
Next time you open your mouth, think of it like standing at a press conference for the Kingdom of God. Would your words reflect the Father’s love, mercy, and truth? Or would they cause confusion and pain? Ephesians 4:29, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.”
Why Words Carry Spiritual Weight
Still, it’s easy to downplay the power of words. After all, “sticks and stones,” right? Wrong. Proverbs 18:21 says, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” That’s not a metaphor. Your words create real impact emotionally, spiritually, and relationally.
Think about a time someone encouraged you with a single phrase. “I believe in you.” “You’re not alone.” Those words may still echo in your heart. Now, think of a harsh word or insult that cut deep. That wound may still feel fresh, even years later.
Words stick. And when we speak them as representatives of Jeshua, they either point people toward Him or away from Him.
Jeshua’s Example: Truth in Love
When Jeshua spoke, He did not avoid truth. But He always spoke from love. Whether He challenged the Pharisees or comforted the broken, His words aligned with the Father’s will. In fact, Isaiah 9:6 tells us He is the “Everlasting Father.” His words are the words of eternity.
That’s your model. Your tongue is not neutral; it’s either building or tearing. Represent Jeshua with words that build.
How to Use Words That Build
So how can we make sure our words represent Christ well?
1. Pause Before You Speak
James 1:19 reminds us to be “slow to speak.” Silence isn’t weakness; it’s wisdom. Before responding, ask: Does this reflect Jeshua’s heart?
2. Choose Words That Heal
Ephesians 4:29 says, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying.” That word “edifying” means building up. Literally constructing spiritual strength in others. Let that be your goal.
3. Ask for Forgiveness
If your words have hurt someone, apologize. That’s not failure it’s spiritual maturity. Represent Jeshua well by humbling yourself.
4. Speak With Intentional Love
Whether you’re posting online or talking to a friend, speak life. Speak love. Speak truth. Not to win arguments, but to win hearts for Christ.
