The Pain, the Authority, the Agenda
You know that sinking feeling when life gets hard, and God feels far away?
Many Christians feel this every day. Yet they often blame themselves, assuming something must be wrong with their faith. However, the real issue is often this: many believers forget to practice the spiritual habit of remembering.
I’ve spent years studying how the Bible shows us the power of memory.
As you read today, you’ll learn how remembering God’s goodness becomes a tool that gives you strength, peace, and courage. Today’s agenda is simple: I will show you why remembering God’s faithfulness matters, how it protects your heart, and how you can build this spiritual habit every day.
Why Forgetting God’s Goodness Hurts Us
We all face moments when we forget what God has done.
Then discouragement arrives quickly, and doubt grows even faster.
In the Old Testament, Israel struggled with this same issue.
God rescued them from Egypt. He split the sea. He provided water and bread in the wilderness.
Yet they still forgot Him.
They lost the spiritual habit of remembering.
They forgot His miracles.
They forgot His love.
They forgot His faithfulness.
As a result, they drifted.
They became disobedient and distant.
They turned away from God because they stopped remembering who He had been to them.
The Problem: We Still Forget Today
Now we struggle with the same pattern.
Life gets busy.
Stress piles up.
Problems feel bigger than God’s promises.
And so we forget…
We forget the prayers God answered.
We forget the moments He carried us.
We forget the times He protected us.
We forget His goodness in past seasons.
But forgetting weakens our faith.
And remembering strengthens it.
The Psalmist Shows Us a Better Way
Thankfully, Scripture also shows us people who built a spiritual habit of remembering God’s faithfulness.
Psalm 9 begins with two powerful steps:
-
The writer gives thanks to God.
-
The writer recounts God’s wonderful deeds.
These are not random actions. They are spiritual habits.
They helped the Israelites remember God’s goodness and stay hopeful in dark times.
When the Psalmist remembered, he found strength.
And when we remember, we find hope too.
Why Remembering God’s Faithfulness Matters
Remembering what God has done is not just a suggestion.
It is a command found throughout Scripture.
Why?
Because remembering:
-
fuels hope
-
builds trust
-
calms fear
-
strengthens faith
-
lifts the heart during spiritual battles
When we remember God’s faithfulness yesterday, we trust Him more today.
A Story: The Day I Needed This Habit
A few years ago, I went through a painful season.
I felt lost, tired, and unsure of what God was doing.
Yet one day, while praying, I felt the Lord nudge me to remember.
So I stopped and thought back to a time when God opened a door I never expected.
Then I remembered a moment when He protected me from a mistake that would have changed my life.
Next, I remembered how He carried me through a heartbreak I thought I would never recover from.
As I remembered, something changed.
My fear softened.
My hope grew.
My faith strengthened.
Remembering didn’t remove the problem.
But it reminded me who was with me in the problem.
How to Build the Spiritual Habit of Remembering
You can start this habit today.
It takes intention, not perfection.
1. Write down one thing God has done for you.
Start with something simple.
A small blessing still counts as a miracle.
2. Speak it out loud.
There is power in your spoken memory.
3. Thank God for it.
Gratitude strengthens spiritual memory.
4. Repeat this daily.
Consistency builds a habit.
And habits shape your heart.
Remembering Fuels Hope for the Future
When you take time to remember God’s goodness, you build hope for tomorrow.
You train your heart to trust, even when you can’t see the full picture.
You remind your soul that God was faithful before, and He will be faithful again.
So pause today.
Think about a time when you felt God’s love.
Tell Him what you remember.
Thank Him for His goodness.
Let those memories shape your hope for the future.
