Stay Alert: Standing Strong Against the Enemy
Have you ever let your guard down at the wrong moment? Maybe you were tired, distracted, or overwhelmed by what others thought of you. Maybe you simply got weary of standing firm. When that happens, regret usually follows. We know we should have been stronger, but we weren’t.
Peter, one of Jesus’ closest disciples, understood this all too well. He walked with Jesus. He loved Him. He believed in Him. Yet when his own reputation and safety were on the line, Peter denied even knowing Jesus three times. Still, that wasn’t the end of Peter’s story.
Instead, Jesus forgave him, restored him, and empowered him to preach boldly on the day of Pentecost. That day, 3,000 people came to faith and were baptized. If Jesus could redeem Peter’s failure, He can redeem ours, too.
Why Staying Alert Matters
Peter later wrote words that still speak to us today:
“Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour. Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith.”
— 1 Peter 5:8–9 (NLT)
Peter wasn’t writing theory. He was writing from experience. He knew how dangerous it was to let your guard down, even for a moment. He also knew the power of God’s grace to lift us up after we fall.
That’s why staying alert is not optional. It’s essential. The devil doesn’t take breaks. He looks for weak spots. He studies our patterns. He strikes when we’re most vulnerable. But with God’s help, we can stand strong.
How to Stay on the Offensive
To resist the enemy, we need both offense and defense. Let’s start with the offensive side of the battle.
-
Stay alert — Don’t get spiritually lazy. Pay attention to what’s shaping your thoughts and actions.
-
Stand firm — Plant yourself on God’s truth, not shifting opinions or temporary feelings.
-
Be strong — Strength comes from God’s Word, not from willpower alone. Read it daily and let it guide you.
-
Seek community — Surround yourself with believers who sharpen your faith and hold you accountable.
-
Fight for time with God — Protect prayer and worship like your life depends on it, because it does.
When you build these rhythms into your life, you don’t just survive the battle. You fight back.
How to Stay on the Defensive
The enemy doesn’t always attack head-on. Sometimes he whispers lies. Sometimes he twists the truth. Sometimes he works through injustice or discouragement. That’s why defense matters too.
-
Call out lies — If truth is being twisted, stand up for what’s right.
-
Do something about injustice — Don’t ignore wrongs. Act with courage and compassion.
-
Resist the devil’s schemes — When you see destruction, pray boldly and work for good.
Defense doesn’t mean being passive. It means protecting what God has entrusted to you and refusing to give the enemy a foothold.
Grace When You’ve Let Your Guard Down
But what about when you’ve already failed? Maybe you slipped into temptation. Maybe you stayed silent when you should have spoken up. Maybe fear won.
Here’s the good news: God’s grace covers even that. Peter’s story proves it. After the resurrection, Jesus didn’t avoid Peter. He sought him out. He cooked him breakfast on the beach. He gave him another chance and restored him as a leader.
If Jesus did that for Peter, He will do the same for you. Don’t stay stuck in guilt. Ask for forgiveness. Receive His grace. Then move forward stronger than before.
A Call to Stay Alert
Life is full of distractions. The enemy will use any of them to pull us away from God. That’s why Peter’s words are just as urgent today as when he first wrote them: Stay alert. Watch out. Stand firm. Be strong.
And remember this: you are not fighting alone. God is for you. Your family of believers around the world is with you. Together, we can stand strong.
