First Things First: Seeking God’s Kingdom Above All

The Struggle We All Face

Do you ever feel like life pulls you in a thousand different directions? Work deadlines, bills, health issues, family needs, and personal goals all compete for your attention. The pressure can feel crushing. And when everything demands your energy, it’s easy to end up anxious and drained. I’ve been there, too. As a Christian teacher, I’ve walked with many people who live under constant stress. They love God, but daily worries often take center stage. Jesus knew this struggle. That’s why in His famous Sermon on the Mount, He spoke directly to our anxious hearts.

What Jesus Said About Priorities

Jesus gave clear direction in Matthew 6:33: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

Instead of letting worry run our lives, Jesus calls us to a new focus. He tells us to put God’s kingdom and His righteousness at the top of our list. When we do, He promises that God will take care of the rest.

What Is God’s Kingdom?

God’s kingdom is more than a far-off idea. It is His rule and reign breaking into the world. When Jesus walked the earth, He brought the kingdom with Him. Through the Church today, His kingdom continues to expand.

Living for God’s kingdom means making His mission our mission. It’s about spreading the good news of Jesus, teaching His Word, and living as witnesses of His grace. Every time you share your faith, encourage someone, or live with integrity, you participate in kingdom work.

What Does It Mean to Seek God’s Righteousness?

Seeking righteousness means desiring to live God’s way. It’s not about being perfect. Instead, it’s about aligning our choices with His Word. For example, when you forgive instead of holding a grudge, you seek righteousness. When you show kindness instead of anger, you walk in God’s way.

This requires daily decisions. Small moments of obedience add up to a life that honors God. And over time, His righteousness becomes your heartbeat.

Why This Brings Freedom

Here’s the problem: when we chase after money, security, or recognition, we end up restless. Worry follows us like a shadow. But when we put God first, peace takes its place.

Jesus didn’t say we wouldn’t face struggles. He said we don’t have to carry the weight of providing for everything ourselves. God knows your needs before you ask. When you make His priorities yours, He promises to meet your needs in His time and way.

A Personal Example

A friend of mine once faced losing his job. Instead of panicking, he chose to stay faithful in prayer and service. He kept seeking God first, even when everything else looked uncertain. Within months, God opened a better opportunity that provided more stability and peace. His story reminds me that God’s promises are not just words on a page, they are real.

Practical Steps to Seek God First

  1. Start with prayer each morning. Ask God to guide your priorities for the day.

  2. Read Scripture daily. Even a few verses can shape your decisions.

  3. Put relationships above possessions. Value people more than things.

  4. Share your faith. Encourage others with the hope of Jesus.

  5. Trust God with your needs. Remind yourself daily that He provides.
