A Life of Generosity, Learning to Give with the Heart of the Lord Jesus Christ
The Hidden Struggle Behind Many Good Deeds
At first glance, generosity seems simple. We see a need, and we help. Yet many people quietly struggle with something deeper: the desire to be seen and appreciated.
For years, I have studied Scripture and written about Christian generosity, humble giving, and biblical generosity. And through this work, one truth continues to surface: our motives matter just as much as our actions.
Today, social media encourages us to post every good deed. Churches sometimes celebrate public giving. Even acts of charity can become performances.
However, the Lord Jesus Christ addressed this problem long ago.
Therefore, in this article, we will explore:
-
What Matthew 6:3 teaches about humble giving
-
Why the Lord Jesus Christ cares about our motives
-
How to live a life of Christian generosity today
-
Practical ways to give quietly and cheerfully
Most importantly, you will learn how to develop a generous heart shaped by the Lord Jesus Christ.
When Good Deeds Become Performances
During His ministry, the Lord Jesus Christ often taught large crowds. Yet among those crowds were religious leaders who loved recognition.
Whenever they gave to the poor, they made sure everyone knew about it.
They wanted praise.
They wanted attention.
They wanted people to admire them.
However, the Lord Jesus Christ saw through their actions. He understood that their giving was not truly about helping others.
Instead, it was about feeding their pride.
Therefore, the Lord Jesus Christ gave a powerful instruction in Matthew 6:3:
“But when thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what thy right hand doeth.”
At first, this sounds mysterious. Yet the message is simple.
True generosity does not seek applause.
Instead, it flows from a heart transformed by the love of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The Real Issue: The Condition of the Heart
The Lord Jesus Christ always looked beyond outward behavior.
He examined the heart.
For example, two people might give the same amount of money to help someone in need. Yet their motives could be completely different.
One person may give to gain recognition.
Another may give quietly out of compassion.
The action looks identical. However, the heart behind it is not.
Therefore, biblical generosity focuses on motive.
When our giving comes from pride, it loses its spiritual value. But when our giving flows from love, humility, and obedience to the Lord Jesus Christ, it becomes powerful.
As a result, generosity becomes more than charity.
It becomes a reflection of the character of the Lord Jesus Christ in our lives.
Cheerful Giving Changes Everything
The apostle Paul later expanded on this idea in 2 Corinthians 9:7.
He wrote that we should not give reluctantly or under pressure. Instead, we should give cheerfully.
Why?
Because the Lord Jesus Christ loves a cheerful giver.
This means generosity should never feel forced.
Rather, it should grow naturally as we understand how much the Lord Jesus Christ has given to us.
Think about it for a moment.
Every breath we take is a gift.
Every opportunity we receive is a blessing.
Every act of grace flows from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Therefore, cheerful giving becomes our response to His generosity.
A Simple Story of Quiet Generosity
Let me share a simple example.
A man in a small church noticed that an elderly widow struggled to pay for groceries. She never asked for help. Yet he quietly observed her situation.
So one afternoon he visited the local grocery store. Without telling anyone, he paid for several weeks of groceries under her name.
The widow later discovered that her bills had been covered.
She never knew who helped her.
Yet the man smiled quietly each time he saw her at church.
Why?
Because he understood something important.
Generosity is not about being noticed. It is about meeting a need.
This is the spirit the Lord Jesus Christ calls us to live by.
Practical Ways to Live a Life of Generosity
Fortunately, generosity does not require wealth.
Instead, it requires a willing heart.
Here are simple ways to practice Christian generosity this week:
1. Help someone anonymously
Pay for someone’s meal.
Leave groceries at a neighbor’s door.
2. Give your time
Visit someone who is lonely.
Offer help to someone overwhelmed.
3. Encourage someone
A kind message or prayer can change someone’s day.
4. Meet practical needs
Look for people who are struggling financially or emotionally.
Above all, remember this:
Give because the Lord Jesus Christ loves them.
Not because others are watching.

A Challenge for This Week
Now here is a simple challenge.
Think about someone in your life who is struggling.
Then ask yourself:
-
What practical need do they have?
-
How can I help them quietly?
-
How can I reflect the love of the Lord Jesus Christ?
Finally, act on it.
Do something generous.
But keep it between you and the Lord Jesus Christ.
Because the greatest acts of generosity are often the ones no one else ever sees.
