Love One Another: How Christ Calls Us to Reveal God Through Our Love

We live in a world full of conflict, division, and fear. Yet Jesus gives us a command that cuts through all of it: love one another.
Therefore, I want to start with a question many Christians silently carry. Why is it so hard to love people today, even in the church?

Then I want to speak plainly. I have spent years studying Scripture, serving in ministry, and watching how Christian community rises and falls. And I have learned one truth again and again: the way we love one another shapes how the world sees Jesus.

So today, I want to guide you through what Jesus said about loving one another, why it matters, and how you can start living it out. And I want to give you practical steps, simple truths, and honest encouragement.

The Command That Sets Us Apart

Jesus made love our greatest mark.
Then He said something bold: “By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another” (John 13:34).

So Jesus did not say people would know us by our knowledge, our church attendance, or our social media verses.
Instead, He said love would tell the story.

Furthermore, He said our unity would reveal Him to the world (John 17:23).
This means our love is not optional. It is a witness.

When Christians love one another well, people grow curious about Jesus.
Then those far from God begin to wonder what makes us different.

Why Christian Love Matters in a Broken World

Jesus knew the world would be filled with anger and strife.
Therefore, He told us to love with His love, steady, patient, bold, and unconditional.
And when we do, we uncover the heart of God for everyone to see.

But let’s be honest. This is easier to preach than to practice.
And many believers struggle with hurt, disappointment, or old wounds.

Maybe you do too.
Maybe someone said something that cut deep.
Maybe someone failed you.
Maybe you still carry bitterness you didn’t ask for.

Yet this is exactly why Christian love matters.
It shows the world a God who loved us first.

John’s Letter: A Clear and Direct Call to Love

Years after Jesus returned to heaven, the apostle John wrote three short letters.
And in his first letter, he spoke directly to believers about Christian love.

He wrote:
“Love is from God … if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another … we love because He first loved us.” (1 John 4:7, 11, 19)

Then he went even deeper.
He said:
“If anyone says, ‘I love God,’ and hates his brother, he is a liar.” (1 John 4:20)

John made his point strong because the early church struggled with the same issue we struggle with today, loving people who do not act, think, or feel like us.

So John reminded them:
Our love for one another proves that God’s love is alive in us.

The Real Problem: Love Has Grown Cold

Many believers want to love others.
However, they feel worn out, tired, and unsure where to begin.

And even more, the world’s anger has started to seep into the church.
So we often see more division than unity.
More judgment than compassion.
More separation than connection.

But here is the truth:
Christian love grows cold when we forget how deeply God loves us.

This is the heart of the problem.
And this is where the healing starts.

A Story: The Moment Someone’s Love Changed Everything

Let me share a simple story.

A woman joined a new church after a painful season.
She carried loneliness, shame, and fear.
She planned to sit in the back and slip out unnoticed.

But one Sunday, an older lady walked up to her, smiled, and said,
“I’m glad you’re here. You matter.”

That one sentence opened a door.
Later, the woman said she didn’t remember the worship songs or the sermon that day.
But she remembered the love.
And that love brought her back to Jesus.

This is the power of loving one another.
It turns small moments into eternal impact.
