The Tender Mercies of the Wicked and the Greater Mercy of God
“The tender mercies of the wicked are cruel” (Proverbs 12:10). This striking phrase forces us to pause and reflect. If even the kindness of the wicked can wound, then how deep must their cruelty truly run? More importantly, this contrast highlights something far greater: the overwhelming mercy of God.
Because of God’s mercy, we are not cut off forever. Because of His mercy, we are still alive. And because of His mercy, eternal life is still being offered to us today.
Understanding the Cruelty of the Wicked
The Bible does not soften the truth about the human heart. Apart from God, it can grow hard, selfish, and cruel. Even when wickedness appears gentle, it often serves hidden motives. It offers help with strings attached. It gives kindness that later demands payment.
In contrast, God’s mercy does not manipulate. It does not deceive. It flows freely from His love. When Scripture says the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel, it reminds us not to place our trust in human goodness alone. Instead, it calls us to look upward, to the One whose mercy never harms.
Mercy Even in Judgment
One of the most challenging truths in Scripture is that God’s judgment and mercy can exist together. Even when God judges, He does not abandon mercy. His justice is never reckless. His discipline is never pointless.
The very fact that humanity still exists is evidence of mercy. We breathe. We wake up. We are given time. Every heartbeat is another opportunity to repent, believe, and be saved.
Even when Scripture speaks of final judgment, it reminds us that God is just, fair, and righteous. Nothing He does is cruel. Everything He does is true.
The Glorious Privilege of Being Alive
Life itself is a miracle. To be conceived, born, and sustained is not an accident. It is a gift. Each person alive today has been given something precious—time to choose.
To be alive is to be offered eternal life. That alone should fill us with awe. We did nothing to earn existence. Yet God granted it. And He continues to extend the invitation of salvation through Jesus Christ.
This is not something to take lightly. It is a glorious and everlasting privilege.
Forgiveness for the Wicked Things We Have Done
None of us stand innocent. We have all sinned. We have all fallen short. Yet the mercy of God reaches even here.
Through Jesus Christ, forgiveness is offered freely. The wickedness of our past does not disqualify us. Instead, it magnifies the grace of God. Where sin abounds, grace abounds even more.
Jesus does not excuse sin, but He forgives it. He cleanses the heart. He softens what was once hard. He offers a new beginning and a blessed hope of eternal life.
Serving Jesus with Thankful Hearts
Because of this mercy, how should we respond? With gratitude. With humility. With gladness.
Scripture calls us to serve the Lord with joy. Not fear-driven obedience. Not forced religion. But thankful hearts that recognize what we have been spared and what we have been offered instead.
Let us endeavor with all our hearts to accept this gift. Let us say yes, yes, with thankful hearts. Mercy has found us. Grace has called us. Eternal life is within reach.
