The Day God Scares People to Death-End-Times Fear

A Fear You Can’t Laugh Off

I used to think it was funny to sneak up on my wife and startle her. She’d jump, scream like a startled pterodactyl, and I’d laugh. But then I read something that made me stop.

Turns out, people can actually be scared to death.

And I don’t mean figuratively. Medical experts like Dr. Suzanne Steinbaum, a renowned cardiologist, say that overwhelming fear can stop the heart—literally. For people with underlying health conditions, the body’s “fight or flight” response can cause a deadly surge in stress hormones. It’s rare, but real.

Still, as shocking as that sounds, it doesn’t even come close to what the Bible says is coming.

So today, I want to show you what Scripture teaches about a future day when fear will grip the entire planet. This is not a fable. It’s a real, prophetic event. And unlike my pranks, it won’t end in laughter.

The Day Fear Becomes Fatal

The Bible describes a terrifying future moment when God reveals His judgment. This event is recorded in Revelation 6. It’s called the breaking of the sixth seal.

Here’s what happens:

“There was a great earthquake… the sun became black… the moon like blood… stars fell… every mountain and island was moved… and people hid in caves begging for the rocks to fall on them” (Revelation 6:12–17).

People don’t just feel scared—they beg for death.

But this isn’t only found in Revelation. The prophet Isaiah also saw it. He described a day of thunder, earthquakes, fire, and terror. He said people would be scarcer than gold (Isaiah 13:9–13, 29:6). That’s not poetic. That’s prophetic.

Even Jesus talked about this coming panic in Luke 21. He said:

“Men will faint from fear and from the expectation of what is coming on the world” (Luke 21:26).

The Greek word used for “faint” actually means to expire, literally to stop breathing.

A Global Panic Attack Like No Other

Think about this. The Bible written thousands of years ago uses the same language that today’s doctors do when describing people who are “scared to death.”

That’s not coincidence. That’s confirmation.

When the sixth seal breaks open, some people will die instantly. Others will wish they had. Pastor John MacArthur puts it this way: “It’ll be the world’s largest prayer meeting—but not to God. They’ll pray to rocks to crush them.”

Why?

Because they don’t want to face the wrath of God or the Lamb.

This is no exaggeration. The Bible says, “It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God” (Hebrews 10:31).

We’ve Forgotten to Fear God

Today, many churches focus only on God’s love, not His judgment. That’s a problem. Because while God is loving, He is also holy and holy means just.

The Bible says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom” (Psalm 111:10). That fear isn’t just about punishment. It’s the awe-filled reverence that draws us to honor Him.

When we understand God’s forgiveness, we fear Him rightly. Psalm 130:4 says, “But with You there is forgiveness, so that You may be feared.”

This is not a fear that drives us away. It’s a fear that draws us close with humility, gratitude, and obedience.

What Kind of Fear Will You Have?

Here’s the big truth: one day, everyone will fear God.

Revelation 15:4 says, “Who will not fear, O Lord, and glorify Your name?”

But the real question is what kind of fear will it be for you?

Will it be the crushing fear that comes from rejecting Him? Or the worshipful fear that flows from knowing Him?

You get to decide. Right now.

A Quick Quiz: Where Do You Stand?

📝 Reflection Tip: If you answered B or C more than once, take a moment to pray. Ask God to help you understand His holiness and love. He’s ready to meet you.

Final Thoughts: Fear Can Be a Gift

We laugh at fear. We treat it lightly. But the Bible treats it seriously and so should we.

The truth is, the fear of the Lord can save your life. It can wake you up, lead you to repentance, and guide you toward a deep relationship with a holy God who loves you enough to warn you.

So today, I’m not here to scare you.

I’m here to prepare you.

There will be a day when fear strikes the earth like never before. But for those who fear God now with reverence, trust, and faith it won’t be a day of terror.

It will be a day of triumph.
