Even When It Hurts: How to Truly Commit Your Way to the Lord Jesus Christ

The Problem Many Believers Face

First, let me ask you something honest.

Have you ever read a Bible verse that moves you deeply in the moment—but somehow slips away a few hours later?

For many believers, this happens all the time. We feel inspired during prayer or reading Scripture. Yet later, life pressures return. Stress comes back. Control sneaks in again.

Therefore, the real struggle is not understanding Scripture. The real struggle is living it.

For me personally, one verse has kept appearing again and again over the last few months.

It is Psalm 37:5:

“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will do this.”

At first glance, this verse sounds simple. However, when we slow down and truly reflect on it, we realize something deeper. This verse asks us to do something very difficult.

It asks us to let go of control.

The Powerful Meaning Behind “Commit”

Now let us look closer at one word in this verse: commit.

Interestingly, the original Hebrew word carries a powerful picture. It means to roll something onto someone else, or to hand something over completely.

Imagine carrying a heavy burden on your back. Your shoulders ache. Your mind races. You keep trying to manage everything alone.

Then suddenly, you roll that burden off your shoulders and place it on the shoulders of the Lord Jesus Christ.

What a powerful image.

Instead of holding everything inside, you release it. Instead of controlling everything, you surrender it.

Therefore, committing your way to the Lord Jesus Christ means trusting Him with the direction of your life.

It means letting Him lead—even when His path looks different from your plan.

Why Trusting the Lord Jesus Christ Is So Hard

However, if we are honest, this is where many believers struggle.

We say we trust the Lord Jesus Christ. Yet at the same time, we still try to manage every detail ourselves.

For example:

  • We worry about our future.

  • We stress about finances.

  • We fear losing control.

  • We question why painful things happen.

Consequently, our faith becomes something we say rather than something we practice.

Yet the Lord Jesus Christ calls us to something deeper.

He calls us to trust Him even when it hurts.

Jesus Shows Us the Ultimate Example

Thankfully, we are not asked to do something that the Lord Jesus Christ did not do Himself.

In fact, He gave us the greatest example during His most painful moment.

In the Garden of Gethsemane, facing unimaginable suffering, the Lord Jesus Christ prayed:

“My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.”
(Matthew 26:39)

First, notice His honesty.

He did not pretend the pain was easy.

However, He still surrendered His will.

“Not my will, but Your will be done.”

Therefore, true faith is not pretending life is painless. Instead, true faith is trusting the Lord Jesus Christ even when life hurts.

A Real-Life Example of Letting Go

Let me share a simple example.

A friend once spent years trying to control every part of his life. He planned everything carefully. He tried to avoid every possible mistake.

However, when an unexpected crisis came, his plans collapsed overnight.

At first, he felt angry and confused. Yet eventually he prayed something different.

He said, “Lord Jesus Christ, I cannot carry this anymore. I give it to You.”

Slowly, peace began to replace anxiety.

Nothing changed overnight. Yet something important changed inside him.

He finally rolled the burden off his shoulders.

The Good News Hidden in Psalm 37:5

Now here is the beautiful promise.

Psalm 37:5 does not end with surrender.

It ends with assurance.

“Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him, and He will do this.”

In other words, the Lord Jesus Christ does not ignore the burdens we give Him.

Instead, He works through them.

Even painful moments can lead to growth, wisdom, and unexpected blessings.

Therefore, when we surrender our lives to the Lord Jesus Christ, we discover a powerful truth:

Even when it hurts, He still works things for good.

A Simple Step You Can Take Today

So what does this look like in everyday life?

First, pause today and identify one burden you are carrying.

Next, bring it to the Lord Jesus Christ in prayer.

Then say something simple and honest:

“Lord Jesus Christ, I roll this burden onto You. I trust You to lead.”

Finally, resist the urge to take it back again.

Trust His timing. Trust His wisdom. Trust His plan.
