Loving Others Well

The Pain Point We All Feel

Have you ever struggled to love someone who hurt you, ignored you, or seemed impossible to deal with? You’re not alone. Many of us wrestle with what it truly means to love others well. We often emulate what we’ve seen in our family, culture, or media, but those examples are usually flawed. That leaves us confused and frustrated.

I’ve spent years studying and teaching what Scripture says about love, and I’ve found one truth that changes everything: Jesus is the standard of love. Not our parents. Not our friends. Not even ourselves.

In this blog, we’ll explore what loving others well really means, why it matters, and how you can start living it out today in practical ways.

What Love Really Means

First, we must admit that love is often misunderstood. Some people see love as a feeling. Others see it as constant approval. But Jesus gives us a deeper, richer definition.

Jesus spoke often about love, but He didn’t just talk about it. He lived it. He fed the hungry. He healed the broken. He forgave His enemies. And most of all, He gave His life for us on the cross.

Love, according to Jesus, isn’t about convenience. It’s about sacrifice.

The New Command to Love

Next, we see that Jesus didn’t invent the idea of loving others. The Old Testament already called God’s people to love. But Jesus raised the bar. He said: “Love one another as I have loved you” (John 13:34).

That’s a big difference. It’s not just loving until we’re tired. It’s not loving when it’s easy. It’s loving as He loved us, fully, unconditionally, and without holding back.

And this matters, because the way we love others is the clearest evidence that we belong to Him.

Measuring Love by Jesus, Not Others

Now, here’s where we often get stuck. We compare ourselves to others. Maybe you’ve thought, “I’m more loving than my neighbor, so I’m doing fine.” But Jesus didn’t say, “Love like your neighbor.” He said, “Love like Me.”

That changes everything. Suddenly, we aren’t measuring by human standards but by divine love. And Jesus’ love is limitless.

Practical Ways to Love Others Well

So how can we live this out in real life? Let’s keep it simple.

  • Be available. Take time to listen when someone needs to talk.

  • Be generous. Share your resources, even if it costs you something.

  • Be forgiving. Release grudges, even when people don’t deserve it.

  • Be prayerful. Ask God daily to help you love like Jesus.

These small steps open the door for God’s bigger work in your relationships.

Reflection and Action

Take a moment to think back on this past week. Did you show selfless love? Did you choose grace when it was hard? If not, don’t feel condemned. Instead, feel invited. Jesus offers you the strength to love better today.

Spend time in prayer and ask, “Lord, help me love as You love.” Then take one step—call a friend, forgive a family member, or serve someone in need.
