A Wake-Up Call We Can’t Ignore
When former President Donald Trump said on Fox News that he hopes ending the war in Ukraine might help him “get to Heaven,” millions leaned in. Some laughed. Others felt anger. Many felt sadness. Why? Because his words echo a common belief: that we can earn Heaven by doing enough good.
But here’s the truth. Trump’s statement isn’t only about politics. It’s about the deepest question every human asks: How can I be saved?
The Struggle With Salvation
Most people, if we’re honest, live like Trump. We hope that being kind, generous, or successful will tip God’s scales in our favor. We want to “try our best” and trust that Heaven will open its doors.
Yet Scripture tells another story. Romans 3:23 reminds us that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. That means no good deed, no matter how noble, can erase sin.
What Franklin Graham Got Right
Franklin Graham quickly clarified the issue. He said we are saved not by our own good works, but by the perfect work of Jesus Christ. Jesus lived sinlessly, died on the cross for our sins, and rose from the grave to give us life. Our hope rests in Him, not in our attempts.
This is not just theology. It’s freedom. Imagine carrying a heavy backpack filled with rocks, trying to climb a mountain. That’s what it feels like to work your way to Heaven. But when you trust Jesus, He takes the weight off.
A Story We All Recognize
Think about a time you worked hard for something, a promotion, a relationship, or a reputation, only to realize it wasn’t enough. That’s what happens when we rely on good works for salvation. They may look impressive, but they can’t heal the heart or erase guilt.
Trump’s words are a mirror. They reflect the fears we all wrestle with: Am I good enough? Have I done enough? Will God accept me?
The Answer in Christ Alone
The answer is not in trying harder. It is in trusting deeper. Salvation comes by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8–9). This means it is a gift, not a reward. A gift can only be received, never earned.
Trump’s near-death escape in 2024 may have softened his heart. Maybe he is asking questions that matter more than politics. And maybe God is using his questions to spark yours.
What We Can Do Now
Instead of criticizing, let’s pray. Instead of mocking, let’s point to Jesus. And instead of trusting in ourselves, let’s rest in the finished work of the cross.
Because the good news is this: God doesn’t want us to “try” our way into Heaven. He wants us to trust Him.
