The Mission of the Church: Living Out the Great Commission

The Pain Point We All Feel

Have you ever wondered if your faith makes a real difference in the world? Many believers sit in church each week, unsure of their role outside the walls of the building. This struggle is common. Yet, Jesus gave us a clear mission before He ascended to heaven.

As someone who has studied Scripture and seen lives changed through faith, I know this: the mission of the church is not optional. It is essential. Today, we’ll unpack what the Great Commission means, why it matters, and how you can live it out in simple yet powerful ways.

What Is the Mission of the Church?

The mission of the church is found in Matthew 28:19–20, where Jesus says:
“Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them… and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.”

First, notice the word “go.” Jesus doesn’t ask us to stay comfortable. He calls us to move. However, this doesn’t mean everyone has to move across the world. Instead, it begins in your neighborhood, your workplace, and even in your family.

Making Disciples Where You Are

The mission of the church is about making disciples. A disciple is someone who learns to follow Jesus daily. That happens through relationships. For example, maybe a friend once prayed with you during a hard season. Their encouragement pointed you closer to God.

Now, you can do the same for someone else. Share your story. Show them how Jesus has changed you. Then, invite them to discover Him for themselves. Discipleship is not about perfection—it is about pointing others toward hope.

Baptism: A Public Step of Faith

Jesus also commands us to baptize new believers. Baptism is a public declaration of faith. It symbolizes being welcomed into the family of God. When someone gets baptized, it is a celebration of their new life in Christ.

While pastors often lead baptisms, Jesus’ call reminds us that every believer is part of this journey. You may not perform the baptism yourself, but your role in walking alongside new believers is just as important.

Who Is Responsible for the Mission?

It can be tempting to think this is the job of pastors or missionaries. Yet, the Great Commission belongs to all of us. Jesus did not limit His words to leaders. He spoke to ordinary followers.

Think of the person who first encouraged you in faith. Chances are, it wasn’t a pastor preaching on a stage. It may have been a friend, parent, or mentor who simply showed up and shared Christ’s love. You can be that person for someone else.

How You Can Start Living the Mission

So, where do you begin? Start by asking God to show you one person who needs encouragement. Then, pray for courage to share your faith. Finally, walk with them patiently as they learn what it means to follow Jesus.

Even small acts like inviting someone to church, listening to their struggles, or sharing how God answered your prayer can open doors for discipleship. Remember, the mission of the church is lived out one relationship at a time.
