Praying is the only instruction the Lord gives that He says we must do instantly and without ceasing, always pray, and not faint. Many times, it seems foolish to do it, you are just praying, praying, and not seeing the result you hope for. Sometimes your family or friends think you are crazy, but God says you must always pray. So please do not stop praying. Sometimes you might feel like your world is unraveling. When devastation, confusion, and trials surround you, it’s easy to feel powerless. But what if I told you that through prayer and an unshakeable connection with God, you could access strength beyond understanding? Today, we’re diving into Daniel 9, a chapter that not only teaches us about intercession but also reminds us how to stand firm when everything around us is falling apart.

1. Intercessory Prayer Begins with God’s Word
Daniel 9: 2, “In the first year of his reign I Daniel understood by books the number of the years, whereof the word of the Lord came to Jeremiah the prophet, that he would accomplish seventy years in the desolations of Jerusalem. 3, And I set my face unto the Lord God, to seek by prayer and supplications, with fasting, and sackcloth, and ashes:”
Daniel in his prayer was pointing to God that according to the scriptures, Jeremiah had prophesied that their exile in Babylon would be 70 years. Daniel was seeking God to know when it would come to an end. Daniel understood Scripture. This tells us something crucial: effective prayer starts with knowing God’s promises. If you desire to improve your prayer life you must also spend time to know the word of God that way we learn to pray according to His will. We often approach prayer as a one-way conversation, but Daniel teaches us to align our prayers with what God has already spoken. When you pray, are you referencing His Word?
2. The Attitude of an Intercessor
Daniel’s humility is striking. Despite his righteous life, he includes himself in Israel’s failures: “We have sinned and committed iniquity… righteousness belongs to You but to us confusion of face.”
Daniel did not think he was better than his fellow Israelites in Babylon, he recognized that they were all in the same situation. We cannot believe that we are better than others because it is only the mercies of the Lord Jesus Christ that is sparing us. When we are conscious of this, it helps our prayer life and our approach to God. As intercessors, we’re called to approach God not with superiority but with sincerity. Daniel reminds us that prayer isn’t about showcasing our spiritual status; it’s about confessing our dependence on God.
3. A Nation in Need of Intercession
Daniel interceded for his nation during a time of immense devastation. Today, we face different challenges but share the same responsibility: to stand in the gap for our communities and countries. As believers, we’re called to represent God’s kingdom above all earthly systems.
This means our prayers should transcend political ideologies and personal biases. We’re ambassadors of Christ, not a political operative.
4. When Faith Costs Everything
Daniel lived through unimaginable hardship: the desecration of the temple, the destruction of his homeland, and personal suffering, including being castrated. Yet, he never wavered in his faith. Can you imagine maintaining faith in a God who allows such trials? Daniel’s example reminds us that faith isn’t about avoiding hardship but trusting God through it.
5. God’s Sovereignty in Our Trials
The most powerful lesson we can learn from Daniel’s story is his unwavering faith and his prayer life.
However, Daniel’s jealous rivals convinced the king to issue a decree that anyone who prayed to any god or person other than the king would be thrown into the lions’ den.
Daniel’s actions
Daniel continued to pray to God publicly, in defiance of the decree.
The consequences
The king was forced to condemn Daniel to death, as the decree could not be changed. Daniel was then thrown into the lions’ den. Daniel was willing to die instead of stop praying to God. Would you be willing to do the same? Many of us talk a good talk, but if our lives are on the line would you be willing to die for your belief? Sometimes, God doesn’t move the mountain we pray against. Instead, He equips us to climb it. Like Daniel, we must trust God’s character even when His actions are hard to understand.
Practical Application:
Study God’s Word: Build a foundation for your prayers by reading Scripture daily. Start with Daniel 9 and Jeremiah 29:10-14.
Confess and Align: Before interceding, confess your sins and align your heart with God’s will.
Pray Boldly: Like Daniel, pray for big things—not just personal blessings but transformation in your family, church, and nation.
Trust His Timing: Remember, God’s delays are not denials. Hold on to His promises even when the outcome isn’t clear.
