What Are You Worshipping? Identifying the True Object of Your Devotion

Are You Worshipping Without Realizing It?

Do you ever wonder why life feels overwhelming or unfulfilling, even when everything seems right? Many people struggle with misplaced priorities, not realizing they might be worshipping the wrong things. I’ve faced this too. The good news is you’re not alone, and together we’ll uncover the truth about worship and how to refocus your heart on what truly matters.

As a believer and a student of God’s Word, I’ve seen how easy it is for even the good things in life—family, success, or ambitions—to become idols. But God created us for something far greater: true worship. Let’s dive in to explore how we can honor God in spirit and truth.

What Does It Mean to Worship?

Worship isn’t just singing songs at church. It’s about our respectful devotion to God our love, honor, and obedience directed toward Him. Isaiah 43:21 says, “The people whom I formed for myself that they might declare my praise.”

But life is full of distractions. The enemy offers countless counterfeits to pull our focus from God. Whether it’s career ambitions, entertainment, or even relationships, these things can take center stage in our hearts if we’re not careful.

How to Identify What You’re Worshipping

Take a moment to reflect. What consumes your thoughts, time, and energy? For example, I’ve personally wrestled with making my role as a parent the center of my life. I was so focused on my children’s needs and my performance as a mom that I forgot my ultimate identity: a child of God.

Your story might be different, but the root issue is the same. Are you elevating something good to a place where it doesn’t belong?

Worship in Spirit and Truth

John 4:24 tells us, “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” True worship connects our innermost being to the Creator. It’s not about rituals or appearances but a genuine connection to God.

When we worship in spirit and truth, we experience joy, peace, and healing. I’ve found comfort in worship during my hardest days. For example, during the uncertainty of the pandemic, I turned to worship and Scripture, which anchored me when the world felt unstable.

Worship by Knowing God’s Word

How can we worship someone we don’t know? Colossians 3:16 reminds us to let the Word of Christ dwell in us richly. Studying Scripture helps us understand God’s character and promises.

When I feel overwhelmed by life, I turn to verses that remind me of God’s unchanging nature. Singing psalms and hymns, even silently, brings peace and draws me closer to Him.

What about you? How well do you know the God you’re worshipping?

Worship God for Who He Is

Psalm 145:3 declares, “Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.” Reflecting on God’s greatness gives us perspective. When we focus on His power and love, our worries shrink in comparison.

Consider the Psalms—they’re full of examples of worshiping God for His attributes: His holiness, love, and provision. Let’s intentionally praise Him for who He is, not just for what He does for us.

Worship from a Place of Gratitude

Gratitude fuels true worship. Hebrews 12:28 encourages us to “offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe.”

Think about what God has done in your life. Salvation, grace, and purpose are gifts we could never earn on our own. When we live with thankful hearts, worship flows naturally.

How to Refocus Your Worship

So, how do we stop worshipping idols and redirect our devotion to God?

  1. Evaluate Your Priorities: Write down what consumes your time and attention. Are these things pointing you toward or away from God?
  2. Immerse Yourself in Scripture: Spend time daily in God’s Word to know Him better.
  3. Pray for Clarity: Ask God to reveal any idols in your heart.
  4. Practice Gratitude: Start a journal where you list God’s blessings daily.

Final Thoughts: Worship the One Who Matters

In a world full of distractions, true worship calls us back to God. He alone is worthy of our highest devotion. Let’s be intentional about worshiping Him in spirit and truth, knowing His Word, and living with gratitude. Let us worship in spirit and truth the Lord Jesus Christ.
