When Walls Come Down: Living in the Unity of Christ

A Pain We Still Feel

Have you ever felt out of place in church? Maybe you walked in and noticed how people already seemed to belong while you stood on the outside. That sting of being left out is real, and sadly, it’s common. Many people leave the church not because of Jesus, but because of walls built by people, walls of race, class, politics, or even gender roles.

I know this pain because I’ve seen it up close. I’ve walked into gatherings where differences created silence instead of warmth. But I’ve also experienced the joy of belonging in a community where those walls came down. That’s why Paul’s words in Galatians 3:28 matter so much today.

A Radical Word in a Divided World

Paul declared, “There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.” In the first century, those words were shocking. People divided along ethnic, economic, and gender lines. But Paul spoke a revolutionary truth: in Christ, those divisions lose their power to define us.

Even today, that truth challenges us. We still live in a divided world. But Jesus offers a new way, the way of unity.

Unity Is Not Optional

We often treat unity like a bonus feature of faith. Something nice, but not necessary. Yet Paul insisted it’s central to the Gospel. Jesus created a new kind of family where every person stands on equal ground. Not because of education, money, or background but because of grace.

Think about it. A Jew and a Gentile worshiping side by side was unthinkable in Paul’s time. A slave and a free person sharing communion as equals? Radical. A woman using her gifts in the same Spirit as a man? Revolutionary. But that’s exactly what happened in the early Church.

Why We Struggle With It Today

If this unity is already ours in Christ, why do we struggle to live it out? The problem is, we often rebuild the walls Jesus tore down. We let cultural norms, personal preferences, or even politics create new barriers. Instead of celebrating our shared identity, we cling to old labels.

Here’s the good news: those walls don’t have the final say. Christ does.

How We Live Out Unity

So how do we move from division to unity? Here are three practical steps:

  1. See others through Christ’s eyes. Instead of first noticing differences, recognize the image of God in every person.

  2. Listen before speaking. Listening breaks down assumptions. It builds trust across divides.

  3. Celebrate diversity as God’s design. Unity doesn’t mean sameness. It means harmony in difference.

When we do these things, the world notices. Unity becomes not just an idea, but a living testimony of the Gospel.

A Story of Unity in Action

I once visited a small church where half the members were immigrants and the other half lifelong locals. They didn’t share the same culture, food, or language. But they shared prayer, worship, and love for one another. At potlucks, dishes from across the globe filled the table. During worship, songs blended languages. And during prayer, tears flowed in unison.

That church wasn’t perfect, but it lived out Galatians 3:28 in a way I’ll never forget.

Protecting What Christ Has Given

Unity isn’t something we invent. It’s a gift we receive in Christ. But we are called to protect it. That means speaking up when division creeps in, choosing grace over pride, and remembering that the cross levels the ground for everyone.

When walls come down, the Church shines. And when the Church shines, the world sees Jesus more clearly.
