Life’s Biggest Question: What Happens After This Life?
Do you know anyone who has come back from the dead like Lazarus? I would ask them what the other side looks like. What question would you ask them? Write your answer in the comments section below.
Do you ever feel the weight of this life? The endless striving, the heartbreaks, the uncertainties—they can leave you wondering: What’s the point? Or even more deeply, What’s next?
If these questions resonate, you’re not alone. The apostle Paul wrote about this very tension in 2 Corinthians 5, describing our earthly existence as a “tabernacle” (or tent)—temporary and fragile. But here’s the good news: Paul assures us of a permanent, unshakable home prepared by God, “a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens” (2 Corinthians 5:1).
As someone who’s spent years exploring and writing about faith, I’ve seen firsthand how the truths in this passage bring hope to weary hearts. Let’s unpack this promise together.
The Temporary Tabernacle vs. the Eternal Home
Paul’s metaphor of our bodies as earthly tabernacles is both humbling and comforting. Like tents, our bodies are functional but not designed to last forever. Paul acknowledges the groaning we experience (verse 2) as we long for something better—not just freedom from pain, but the fullness of life God has prepared for us in eternity.
This longing isn’t escapism; it’s the Spirit within us—a down payment, as Paul calls it in verse 5—reminding us that this world is not our ultimate home.
Walking by Faith, Not by Sight
In verse 7, Paul challenges us to live with an eternal perspective: “For we walk by faith, not by sight.” This can be hard when life’s struggles feel all-consuming. But faith allows us to see beyond the temporary, anchoring us in the confidence that God’s promises are true.
How do we cultivate this faith? Through prayer, Scripture, and surrounding ourselves with a community of believers who remind us of God’s faithfulness. When we’re tempted to focus on what’s visible—our circumstances, failures, or fears—faith calls us to shift our gaze to Christ.
A Ministry of Reconciliation
Paul goes further, explaining that God’s eternal promise comes with a calling: reconciliation. Because Christ has reconciled us to God, we are now His ambassadors, bringing this message of hope to others (verses 18-20). Think about that for a moment: God invites us to participate in His work of restoring broken lives and relationships.
How can you live out this ministry of reconciliation? It might mean forgiving someone who’s hurt you, sharing the Gospel with a friend, or simply extending grace in your daily interactions.
Becoming a New Creation
One of the most powerful promises in this chapter is found in verse 17: “Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.”
No matter your past mistakes or current struggles, Christ offers you a fresh start. When you surrender to Him, He transforms you from the inside out. This isn’t just a one-time event; it’s a daily process of becoming more like Jesus.
Why This Matters Today
In a world filled with uncertainty and chaos, 2 Corinthians 5 offers a roadmap for living with purpose and hope. It reminds us that:
Our pain and struggles are temporary.
God has prepared an eternal home for us.
We are called to live as ambassadors of reconciliation.
When we embrace these truths, we find the strength to face today’s challenges with confidence, knowing that “to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord” (verse 8).
Final Thought: Are You Ready to Embrace the Eternal Promise?
The invitation is simple yet profound: Be reconciled to God. Whether you’re new to faith or have walked with Christ for years, this chapter calls us to live with eternity in mind. So, let me ask you: Are you ready to walk by faith, embrace your calling, and live as a new creation? Let’s journey together toward the eternal home God has prepared for us.
