When You Feel Empty and Weak, You’re Not Alone
Most people don’t want to admit they’re struggling. Yet deep down, many of us feel exactly that way, tired, spiritually drained, and unsure of where to turn. Maybe you feel like you’ve run out of strength. Or maybe you wonder if God could really use someone like you.
You’re not alone. And you’re not disqualified.
In fact, according to Jesus, your emptiness might be the very thing that qualifies you for the kingdom of heaven.
Why Would Jesus Say This?
Jesus launched His Sermon on the Mount with a powerful and surprising statement:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
— Matthew 5:3 (ESV)
At first glance, this doesn’t make sense. When we think of being poor, we often picture someone lacking money, food, or shelter. So how could poverty—especially spiritual poverty—be a blessing?
Let’s break it down.
What Does It Mean to Be Poor in Spirit?
To be poor in spirit is not about having low self-worth. Instead, it means recognizing that we are spiritually bankrupt without God. It’s the deep understanding that we can’t earn, deserve, or produce our own salvation. We need help. We need Him. We accept that if God was to mark iniquity we would be cast out, this makes us more forgiving, more loving, more compassionate, less judgmental and more Patient with ourselves and others.
Those who are poor in spirit live with humility. They know they don’t have it all together, and they stop pretending that they do.
That kind of honesty opens the door for God to move in powerful ways.
A Story That Might Sound Familiar
Take Mia, for example. She grew up in church, knew the “right answers,” and volunteered in ministry. But behind closed doors, she was exhausted emotionally, spiritually, and physically. She tried harder, prayed longer, but nothing seemed to change.
One night, she finally broke down and said aloud, “God, I have nothing left.”
In that moment of total surrender, something shifted. She wasn’t stronger, but she wasn’t alone anymore. She had finally given God room to be everything she couldn’t.
That’s what it means to be poor in spirit and blessed because of it.
Why the Kingdom of Heaven Belongs to the Broken
Here’s the beauty of this promise: Jesus isn’t looking for the strongest, the richest, or the most self-sufficient. He’s inviting the humble, the honest, and the broken to come close.
When we admit our need, we receive His strength.
When we confess our emptiness, we’re filled with His Spirit.
When we stop trying to save ourselves, we discover the gift of salvation.
God doesn’t bless pride. He blesses humility.
What If I Don’t Feel “Blessed”?
You might think, I still feel empty. I still feel overwhelmed. That’s okay. Feelings come and go, but truth stands firm.
And here’s the truth: Jesus said you are blessed not because of how you feel, but because of how much you depend on Him.
When you’re poor in spirit, you’re in the perfect position for God to work in you and through you.
