🕊️ Does God Force Obedience? Why Freedom to Choose Matters in the Abortion Debate

Have you ever felt caught between your faith and the freedom to choose?
Many Christians are wrestling with the heated abortion debate, especially after recent pro-life discussions at the Southern Baptist Convention. The call to criminalize abortion, even punishing women, has left believers confused, angry, or heartbroken.

As a Christian inspiration writer and teacher, I’ve walked alongside many who wrestle with these moral dilemmas. But here’s the truth: God gives us laws, yes. But He also gives us freedom. The question we must ask is this: Does loving God mean we lose our right to choose?

Let’s unpack this complex issue with biblical clarity, spiritual insight, and honest questions.

📜 God’s Commandments and Human Choice

As a Christian, what is the most important decision any person can make? Think about it and email me your answer.  I am proposing that the most important decision anyone can make is whether to choose Eternal life of hell fire. You notice that our heavenly Father offered it to us but He has left it up to us to choose. Joshua 24:15, “15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

God didn’t create robots. He created people with free will. That’s foundational to the Bible.

Adam and Eve were given a rule, Don’t eat the fruit. But they had the power to obey or disobey (Genesis 2:16-17). God didn’t build a fence around the tree. He gave instructions and let them choose.

Jesus also respected free will. He never forced anyone to follow Him. In fact, in Luke 18, the rich young ruler walked away. Jesus didn’t chase him. He let him go.

That principle still stands. God sets life and death before us and then says, “choose life” (Deuteronomy 30:19). But the choice? That’s ours to make.

So, when Christians say women must be punished for choosing abortion, we must ask: Is that how God handles our choices?

🤰 Is Abortion a Sin? Then So Is Forcing Obedience

Let’s be honest. Abortion is a deeply emotional issue. For many Christians, it’s not just about law, it’s about life. But criminalizing women who seek abortions misunderstands the heart of God.

If sin deserves judgment, God handles that, not us.

Consider this: Jesus stopped an execution of a woman caught in adultery (John 8:1-11). The law said she should be stoned. Jesus said, “Let him who is without sin cast the first stone.”

Where are those voices now?

Why do we shout so loudly about abortion, yet go silent when bombs fall on children in Gaza and Ukraine?

⚔️ The Hypocrisy of War and Pro-Life Rhetoric

Let’s pause here. Because this part hurts.

Many of the same Christians who label abortion as murder also support military action that kills thousands including children. They bless soldiers in the name of “freedom” while condemning scared mothers for making impossible choices.

Isn’t that a contradiction?

James 3:10 says, “Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers and sisters, this should not be.”

e can’t call ourselves pro-life and stay quiet about war. We can’t criminalize women while justifying mass violence. Life is sacred. in and out of the womb.

💔 Real Lives. Real Choices.

Picture this:

A young woman named Sarah walks into a clinic, heart pounding. She’s alone, afraid, and not sure what to do. She believes in God. She’s been to church. But now she’s pregnant from an abusive relationship. Her church told her abortion is murder. But they offer no help. No shelter. No support.

She prays.

Then she walks out, unsure of everything, including God’s love.

If we criminalize women like Sarah, are we really helping? Or are we pushing them further from grace?

🧭 What Did Jesus Really Teach?

Jesus always started with compassion, never condemnation.

He taught truth, yes. But He also healed, forgave, and loved unconditionally. He gave people the right to walk away, and the invitation to return.

We are called to offer the same grace.

Let’s focus on building a culture of life, not through fear or force, but through love, support, and honest conversations.

🙋‍♀️ What Can We Do as Christians?

  • Support women emotionally and practically, don’t just tell them what to do.

  • Speak against all violence, including war.

  • Stand for life in every form: unborn, born, refugee, elderly, enemy.

  • Vote with conviction but live with compassion.

Jesus didn’t die to enforce laws. He died to set people free.

🙏 Final Thoughts: Freedom Is Not Rebellion

God gives us boundaries, but also freedom.

When we strip others of that freedom in the name of faith, we don’t look like Jesus. We look like the Pharisees.

Let’s lead with love, stand for justice, and trust God to handle the hearts of those who are still choosing.
