Knowing God: When the Earth Is Filled With His Glory

The Promise That Holds Us Steady

Have you ever looked at the world and wondered, Where is God in all this?
You see injustice.
You hear painful stories.
You feel confusion rising in your own heart.

Yet right here is where hope breaks in.

Scripture gives us a breathtaking promise: “The earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.”
This promise does not suggest a thin layer of awareness. Instead, it points to total fullness. God’s glory will not be hidden. It will be known, experienced, and enjoyed everywhere.

In this message, we will explore what it truly means to know God, why this promise still matters today, and how it shapes the way we live, pray, and hope.

Habakkuk’s Honest Questions and God’s Bigger Answer

The prophet Habakkuk lived in a time that felt unfair and broken.
Because of this, he did not hide his questions from God. Instead, he brought them boldly.

He asked why injustice seemed to win.
He questioned why the wicked were allowed to rule over God’s people.
He struggled with what he saw and felt.

Yet God’s response lifted Habakkuk’s eyes higher.

God did not deny the presence of evil. However, He revealed something greater. He showed that history is moving toward a clear destination. Though judgment has its place, God’s ultimate desire is relationship. His heart is that the whole earth would truly know Him.

And this changes everything.

What It Really Means to Know God

In Scripture, knowing God is not about collecting facts.
It is not about head knowledge alone.
Instead, it is deeply relational.

In Hebrew thought, the word know speaks of intimacy, trust, love, and lived experience. It is even used to describe the bond between husband and wife. Therefore, when God says the earth will be filled with the knowledge of His glory, He is not talking about information. He is talking about connection.

God is not filling the world with data about Himself.
Rather, He is filling the world with people who walk with Him, listen to Him, and love Him with their whole hearts.

That is the kind of knowledge that transforms lives.

The Problem: Knowing About God Without Knowing God

Here is the tension many believers face today.

We live in an age of sermons, podcasts, books, and social media. Information is everywhere. Yet many people still feel distant from God. They know verses. They know theology. But they struggle to know Him.

This gap can leave believers discouraged and dry.
It can also leave seekers confused and skeptical.

The solution is not more noise. Instead, the solution is deeper relationship.

When we move from learning about God to walking with God, everything changes.

How God Is Still Filling the Earth With His Glory

Habakkuk’s vision reminds us that God is always at work, even when we cannot see it.
History is not random.
God is steadily revealing His glory.

He does this through changed lives.
He does this through faithful obedience.
He does this through the quiet work of the Holy Spirit.

Even in seasons of confusion or injustice, God’s purpose continues. One day, this promise will be fully complete. Until then, we live in hope, trust, and expectancy.

Our Opportunity Today

Today, we have an incredible role to play.

We can pray for people all around the world.
We can pray for those from different faith traditions.
We can pray for those who have never truly encountered Jesus Christ.

Ask God to reveal Himself by the power and presence of the Holy Spirit.
Pray that hearts would open.
Pray that lives would be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord.

This is not passive hope. This is active participation.

A Simple Story of Knowing God

Think of a close friend.
You did not build that relationship through facts alone.
You built it through time, trust, and shared experience.

In the same way, knowing God grows as we walk with Him daily. Through prayer. Through Scripture. Through obedience. Through listening.

Little by little, intimacy grows.
And as it does, God’s glory becomes visible in our lives.
