Let’s Be Real: Faith and Politics Are Messy
A Growing Divide in Faith and Politics
Have you ever sat in church and thought, “Man, this world is a mess… who’s even fighting for us anymore?”
Yeah, I have wondered that many times.
I’ve spent years digging deep into faith, culture, and politics.
Today, we’re getting real about a big question: Why do so many White evangelicals still back Donald Trump, even now in 2025?
You might be surprised. You might nod your head. You might even wrestle a little inside (and that’s good).
Let’s dive in, and by the end, you’ll understand a whole lot more about where faith and politics crash into each other.
Why White Evangelicals Support Trump More Than Others
First, Pew Research Center recently surveyed over 3,500 U.S. adults. The results were clear. Around 72% of White evangelical Protestants approve of how President Trump is handling his job. In contrast, only 40% of all Americans feel the same.
Moreover, 57% of White evangelicals say they trust Trump’s words more than previous presidents. This shows that trust plays a powerful role. They believe Trump speaks for them — something they did not feel with past leaders.
Example: At a 2025 rally in Des Moines, Iowa, prayers and praises for Trump filled the air. For many, it was not just a political event but a spiritual gathering.
So, why does this happen?
Faith, Fear, and Party Lines
Next, we must talk about fear. Many evangelicals fear losing religious freedoms, seeing Trump as their defender. Ending Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) policies and cutting government departments look like victories to them.
Data shows:
-
75% approve ending DEI programs
-
75% approve budget cuts
-
67% support high tariffs
Clearly, many White evangelicals feel these actions protect traditional American and Christian values.
Meanwhile, Black Protestants, Hispanic Catholics, and the religiously unaffiliated largely disapprove. Politics, it turns out, mirrors the bigger cultural divide in our nation.
Are Ethics a Problem?
Now, let’s address the elephant in the room: ethics.
Around 70% of White evangelicals rate Trump’s administration’s ethics as excellent or good. Yet, the rest of America does not agree. 62% of Americans overall rate the Trump team’s ethics as only fair or poor.
Is this a case of willful blindness? Some say yes. Others argue that evangelicals choose policy wins over personal character.
As an example, imagine a parent choosing a strict school despite the principal’s questionable reputation. They prioritize results — not the personality. Similarly, many evangelicals prioritize Trump’s conservative victories over his flaws.
The Big Issue: Trust and Identity
Another factor is identity. Being a White evangelical today often means identifying as Republican. In fact, Pew’s research shows strong Republican leanings among this group.
Because of this, many evangelicals view attacks on Trump as attacks on themselves.
In contrast, Black Protestants, Hispanic Catholics, and “nones” mostly lean Democrat. Naturally, their views of Trump differ sharply.
Thus, support for Trump is about more than policy. It’s deeply personal.
The Problem: Faith Tied Too Closely to Politics
But here’s the danger: when our faith becomes tied too closely to one political leader or party, we risk losing our prophetic voice. Jesus calls us to be salt and light — not party loyalists.
As Christians, we must ask hard questions:
-
Are we supporting policies that reflect Jesus’ love and justice?
-
Are we putting faith in a person rather than in Christ?
If not, we must repent and return to our first love.

How We Move Forward in Faith
In conclusion, it’s vital to stay informed, grounded, and prayerful. Political leaders come and go. But the Kingdom of God stands forever.
As believers, let’s choose our loyalty wisely. Let’s remember: Christ is our King not Trump, not Biden, not any earthly leader.
If you feel burdened or confused, you’re not alone. Pray, seek community, and trust God’s Word more than any news cycle.
God still reigns, and He invites us to live with bold faith and clear-eyed hope.
