Learning to Live Humbly: Why Grace Matters More Than Being Right

Have you ever met an angry Christian?
Or better yet, have you ever been one?

If we are honest, most believers have struggled with frustration, pride, or harsh words at some point. And because I have spent years studying Scripture, writing devotionals, and walking through faith with everyday people, I have witnessed this struggle firsthand. Therefore, today we will address a quiet problem in the Church, self-righteousness. More importantly, we will discover how learning to live humbly restores joy, unity, and Christ-like love.

Why Humility Is a Struggle for Many Christians

At times, Christianity can feel confusing.
And at times, knowledge can feel empowering.

Because we know the truth of the gospel, we may slowly begin to feel superior to others. As a result, we may grumble more easily. Then we may complain more often. Eventually, we may even speak harshly about people who think, live, or believe differently.

However, this mindset misses the heart of the gospel.

The gospel does not begin with us being right. Instead, it begins with us being lost.

The Common Starting Point We All Share

Before grace entered our lives, we all stood on the same ground.
And that ground was broken.

Scripture teaches that no one earns salvation. Therefore, no one deserves credit. As a result, humility becomes the natural response to grace. We do not stand above others. Instead, we stand beside them.

Because of this truth, self-righteousness has no place in the life of a believer.

What the Gospel Really Teaches Us About Humility

The apostle Paul makes this clear in Ephesians 4:2.
He urges believers to live with humility, gentleness, and patience.

He does not say to correct people harshly.
And he does not say to look down on others.

Instead, he calls us to bear with one another in love. Therefore, growth becomes something we pursue together, not alone.

And this teaching did not start with Paul.

Jesus: The Living Example of Humble Faith

Jesus lived what He taught.
And He taught what He lived.

Although He had all authority, He served.
Although He was sinless, He showed mercy.

Jesus washed feet.
Jesus welcomed outsiders.
Jesus spoke truth with compassion.

As followers of Christ, we are called to reflect that same humility. Therefore, patience is not weakness. Gentleness is not compromise. And love is never optional.

The Hidden Cost of Self-Righteous Faith

When humility fades, division grows.
And when pride grows, love shrinks.

Angry Christianity pushes people away from Jesus instead of drawing them closer. As a result, the Church loses credibility. Worse yet, believers lose peace.

But there is hope.

Practical Ways to Grow in Humility Every Day

Change begins with small steps.
And small steps create lasting habits.

Here are a few simple ways to practice humility today:

  • Slow down and listen without interrupting

  • Encourage someone instead of correcting them

  • Admit when you are wrong

  • Choose grace over winning an argument

  • Pray for patience before reacting

Each step reflects the heart of Christ.

A Short Story: Humility in Action

I once watched a believer publicly apologize for harsh words spoken in anger. Instead of losing respect, they gained it. Their humility softened hearts. Their honesty opened doors. And their example pointed others to Christ.

Grace always does that.
