Creating a Heart of Gratitude: Finding Strength and Joy in Every Season
The Pain of Forgetting What We Still Have
Have you ever had a season when your problems became so loud that you could barely hear your blessings?
Perhaps you woke up worried about money. Maybe you were dealing with family problems. Perhaps your health, career, relationships, or future seemed uncertain. Consequently, your mind kept focusing on what was wrong instead of remembering what the lord Jesus Christ had already done.
I have learned through studying Scripture and sharing Christian encouragement that gratitude is not simply a feeling we experience when everything goes well. Instead, creating a heart of gratitude is a spiritual habit that can strengthen us when life becomes difficult.
Today, we will look at what the Psalms teach us about gratitude. More importantly, we will discover how to develop a thankful heart, even when circumstances are not perfect.
Because the lord Jesus Christ remains faithful, we can find something to thank Him for in every season.
What Does It Mean to Have a Heart of Gratitude?
First, gratitude means recognizing the goodness and faithfulness of the lord Jesus Christ.
A grateful heart does not pretend that problems do not exist. Instead, it chooses to remember that problems are not the whole story.
For example, imagine someone walking through a difficult financial season. Every bill may seem overwhelming. Every phone call may bring another concern. However, that person can still say:
“Lord Jesus, I may not understand everything happening around me, but I thank You because You have never stopped being faithful.”
That simple prayer changes the focus.
Instead of looking only at the problem, we begin looking toward the One who can carry us through the problem.
Therefore, Christian gratitude is not denial. It is faith in action.
The Psalms Teach Us to Give Thanks
The book of Psalms gives us songs, prayers, cries, celebrations, and worship for many different seasons of life.
Sometimes the writer celebrates.
Sometimes the writer cries.
Sometimes the writer feels surrounded by trouble.
Yet again and again, the Psalms turn our attention toward the faithfulness of the lord Jesus Christ.
Psalm 100 is especially powerful because it connects worship with thanksgiving. Verse 4 says:
“Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.”
Then Psalm 100:5 gives us a reason for that gratitude:
“For the LORD is good; his mercy is everlasting; and his truth endureth to all generations.”
Notice something important.
The Psalm does not say that we should be thankful only when life is easy.
Instead, it points us toward the character of the lord Jesus Christ.
He is good.
His mercy is everlasting.
His truth endures.
Therefore, our gratitude can rest on something stronger than our circumstances.
Gratitude Begins With Who the Lord Jesus Christ Is
Next, creating a heart of gratitude begins by thanking the lord Jesus Christ for who He is.
You may not know what tomorrow will bring.
However, you can know who holds tomorrow.
You may not understand your current situation.
However, you can trust the One who has remained faithful throughout your life.
So, instead of beginning your prayer with everything you need, try beginning with worship.
Say:
“Lord Jesus Christ, I thank You because You are good. I thank You because Your mercy is everlasting. I thank You because Your truth remains forever.”
That kind of prayer can change the direction of your day.
Furthermore, it reminds your heart that your relationship with the lord Jesus Christ does not depend on whether today is easy or difficult.
Thank Him for What He Has Already Done
After thanking the lord Jesus Christ for who He is, remember what He has already done.
Think about the doors He opened.
Think about the dangers He brought you through.
Think about the people He placed in your life.
Think about the times you thought you would not make it, yet somehow you kept moving forward.
Most importantly, remember the times when the lord Jesus Christ gave you strength when you felt weak.
Sometimes we forget yesterday’s victories because today’s problems demand our attention.
However, remembering the past can strengthen our faith for the present.
For instance, David repeatedly remembered the faithfulness of the lord while facing difficult circumstances. The Psalms demonstrate that remembering what the lord has done can become an act of worship.
Therefore, take time to remember.
Write down five things the lord Jesus Christ has done for you.
They do not have to be dramatic.
Perhaps you are thankful for your family.
Perhaps you are thankful for another morning.
Perhaps you are thankful for a friend.
Perhaps you are thankful for a second chance.
Perhaps you are simply thankful that you are still here.
Small blessings can become powerful reminders of a faithful Savior.
Gratitude Does Not Mean You Ignore Your Pain
Now, we need to understand something important.
A thankful heart does not mean that you cannot cry.
You can be grateful and still hurt.
You can trust the lord Jesus Christ and still have questions.
You can worship while walking through disappointment.
The Psalms show us this clearly. Scripture gives us examples of people who brought their fear, sorrow, confusion, and pain before the lord.
Therefore, gratitude does not require you to pretend.
Instead, gratitude teaches you where to take your pain.
You can say:
“Lord Jesus, this hurts. I do not understand it. Nevertheless, I still trust You. Thank You for staying with me.”
That is real faith.
Gratitude Can Change the Way We See Difficult Seasons
Furthermore, gratitude can change our perspective.
Imagine two people walking through the same difficult situation.
The first person says, “Everything is going wrong. Nothing good is happening.”
The second person says, “This is difficult, but the lord Jesus Christ has carried me through difficult days before. I will trust Him again.”
The circumstances may be identical.
Yet their perspective is different.
That is why developing a thankful heart matters.
Gratitude does not necessarily remove the storm.
Instead, gratitude can help us remember that we are not facing the storm alone.
A Simple Three-Step Gratitude Practice
If you want to begin creating a heart of gratitude, start with three simple steps.
1. Thank the Lord Jesus Christ for Who He Is
Begin your day with worship.
Say:
“Lord Jesus Christ, thank You for being good, faithful, merciful, and true.”
Before you ask for anything, remember who He is.
2. Thank Him for What He Has Done
Next, remember His faithfulness.
Think about your life.
Think about your family.
Think about your salvation.
Think about answered prayers.
Think about protection.
Think about opportunities.
Then, thank Him specifically.
Instead of saying only, “Thank You for everything,” say, “Lord Jesus, thank You for bringing me through that difficult season.”
Specific gratitude helps us recognize specific blessings.
3. Thank Him for What He Will Do
Finally, thank the lord Jesus Christ for the future.
You do not know exactly what tomorrow will bring.
Nevertheless, you can trust Him.
Say:
“Lord Jesus Christ, I do not know what tomorrow holds, but I trust You with tomorrow. Thank You for continuing to lead, strengthen, and keep me.”
That is faith-filled gratitude.
Build a Daily Gratitude Habit
Moreover, gratitude becomes stronger when we practice it consistently.
You could keep a simple gratitude journal.
Each morning, write three things you are thankful for.
Each evening, write one way you saw the faithfulness of the lord Jesus Christ during the day.
You could also make gratitude part of your family prayer.
Ask each person:
“What is one thing you are thankful for today?”
Then allow everyone to share.
Over time, these simple conversations can create a culture of thankfulness.
When You Cannot Think of Anything to Be Thankful For
Sometimes you may honestly struggle.
Perhaps you have experienced a major loss.
Perhaps you are facing rejection.
Perhaps your plans have fallen apart.
Perhaps you are tired of waiting.
In those moments, start small.
Thank the lord Jesus Christ for His mercy.
Thank Him for His presence.
Thank Him for another opportunity to trust Him.
Thank Him for His Word.
Thank Him for the promises of Scripture.
Thank Him for carrying you this far.
You do not have to manufacture an emotion.
Instead, make a decision to turn your attention toward His faithfulness.
What Does Scripture Teach About Gratitude?
The biblical message about gratitude extends beyond one Psalm.
For example, 1 Thessalonians 5:18 teaches believers to give thanks in every circumstance. Philippians 4:6 also connects prayer with thanksgiving. Together, these passages show that gratitude can become part of our response to life’s circumstances rather than something reserved only for good days.
That distinction matters.
We do not have to thank the lord Jesus Christ for every painful thing that happens.
Instead, we can thank Him while we are walking through difficult circumstances because He remains faithful.
That difference can help us understand biblical gratitude more clearly.
Your Gratitude Challenge
Today, I want to challenge you to practice gratitude for seven days.
For the next week, take five minutes each day.
Write down:
- One thing you are thankful for about the lord Jesus Christ.
- One thing He has already done for you.
- One thing you are trusting Him to do in the future.
Then, turn each item into a prayer.
By the end of seven days, you will have created a personal record of gratitude.
When another difficult season comes, you can look back and remember:
“The lord Jesus Christ has been faithful before, and He is still faithful today.”
